Samuel was, indeed, unusually quiet. He was rather perplexed, too, because he wasn't sure what he'd done to offend the District Leader. He ran over the words he'd spoken, finding them respectfully uttered and inoffensive. He'd definitely been getting the cold shoulder, though. He wasn't even being looked at any more, it was all about Remi.

Turning his gaze to his companion when he felt his eyes on him, Sam could understand why. As frustrating as his stubborn ass was, he was also charismatic and adorable. It was easy to be smitten with him. Sam gave Remi a smile that was small but hopefully reassuring, twisting his hand in Remi's hold so that he could run his thumb across his wrist. He was aware that he was probably being too familiar, considering their uncertain status but he couldn’t help himself.

He anticipated needing to help Remi put DL McCloud's number in his phone in a moment. He straightened in his seat, looking curiously at the vampire in question.

Jake considered giving Remi his personal number, the same one that had just been called. However, he didn't need Remi having total access to him right now, not with Sam missing. He instead, pulled a business card out of a cigarette case, handing it over to Remi. He gave one to Samuel as well, not wanting to look like he was favoring one resident over another (although he clearly was). The number was actually Lisa-Joe's office. He assumed she could triage whether or not what Remi needed required a face to face.

"Let's start with this," he explained. "And the next time we meet in person, you should come to my own rooftop. I own a place in the south with a great view of the metropolis, among others. It would be much better for you than the club or the headquarters underneath."

The meeting felt over, and so Jake rose to indicate they should rise too. "It was a pleasure meeting you both," he said, offering a hand to each man. "Mr. Taylor, once the apartment is legally bought, I would find it helpful if you would help Remi transfer the property into his name as opposed to mine. I'll have all the documents drafted for you, but I hope if Remi has any questions you'll be there to assist."

Once Jake got the yes he was hoping to hear, he'd have his guards escort them down if they needed. To Remi he managed something of a smile. "See you soon, and welcome to the Central District."

Jake pulled out his phone and saw Arik's text. He wrote back, Dante's is good. I'll be another hour at the WR, but they'll let you up to the flat at this point. Have them call me if they give you trouble.

Send.

With that, Jake began his email to Tyler, his thoughts once again returning to his missing daughter.

If it hadn’t been for the boundaries of Remi’s face, his grin would’ve stretched across the room when Jake suggested their next meeting could occur on a rooftop. He’d be able to see the sky and breathe freely, and should he take the District Leader one of his plants as thanks? Maybe he’d like a pot filled with succulents, something he could incorporate into—

Remi’s gift-giving plans were interrupted by the shuffle that was closing a meeting, something he wasn’t familiar with and left him feeling three steps behind as more arrangements were made - which Sam agreed to - cards were accepted, and hands were shaken. It took Sam nudging him for Remi to realize that it’d all ended and he should remove himself from the booth.

Still in a daze, he almost didn’t remember to stop and thank Jake for not making him leave the rooftop garden, but he did, then he was swept away again, this time by Sam who led him by the hand downstairs and outside.

He’d gone into The White Rabbit homeless, but now he was lined up to become the owner of his favorite place in the city.

Welcome to the Central District, indeed.
