Salt has subterranean parking with a valet service - drive your car up to the kiosk, leave it idling, and Salt staff will approach, handing the driver a parking tag.
Thick red carpet leads to the elevator. Inside the lift is an elevator operator - employed by the building, not the restaurant, so they wear a navy-coloured uniform - who has to be told what your destination is.
The restaurant is a rooftop establishment in a skyscraper with excellent views.
Beyond the elevator, the entrance to Salt lies behind a set of double glass panelled doors. The foyer holds the maitre d's lectern/host's station and a scattering of plush lounges and armchairs near a small bar - often occupied by couples happily waiting for their tables to become available. The lighting is subtle and twinkling, the intimate ambience of the restaurant evident from the outset.
Complimentary hors d'ouevres (amuse-gueles), tasting menu, fresh flowers, tasteful artwork, candlelight, white linen tablecloths and napkins. Beautifully, lavishly decorated. Combined with low lighting, it's very romantic.
Your waiter will know how the rabbit loin is cooked, whether there's tarragon in the lobster demi glace, and what kind of nuts are in the chocolate torte. A special, supernatural menu is provided without awkward questions, or regulars know that any blood-type or specialty meal request is met discreetly at all times. Your food will arrive hot, your utensils will be changed between each course, your napkin will be folded in your absence.
A modest dance floor graces one side of the room, allowing dancers to twirl and spin before the floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows and feel like they're floating over the city itself. Toilets are located near the dance floor, kitchen opposite from toilets on other side of dance floor. The music is piped on Monday to Thursday nights, a ten piece band plays classical music for dining or big band for dancing Friday to Sunday nights.
