Title: ALTERNATE: Switch
Post by: Trillian on August 19, 2019, 01:14:43 PM
The morning sun burnt through the fog and warmed up the day. Jake McCloud watched it rise with the satisfaction of being the only vampire in the city capable of seeing such a thing. Perhaps the only vampire in the world. Unconsciously he twisted the ring on the middle finger of his left hand. He had meetings to attend today, not all of them by appointment, and his presence during the day would be a surprise for many.

Even though it was daytime he dressed completely in black. A tight turtle-neck over crisp jeans and thick buckled boots. When he stood he noticed the stare of a passing jogger and offered him a killer smile sans fangs. The jogger stumbled and Jake laughed to himself, looking away from the poor wretch. He headed away from the park and into the shelter of shade provided by tall city buildings, because the heat of the sun's rays was a great deal more powerful than he remembered. His skin felt like it was sizzling but at least now he would get a nice tan.

Jake worked his way through the city streets on foot, heading west. The footpaths were filled to brimming with people squashed together, marching to work. He was overwhelmed by the daytime smells; people, food, pollution. Nighttime in this city was still bustling, but nothing like this. Everything was a hundred times more potent and possessed a vivaciousness of life.

Halen's sacrifice would not be in vain. Again, Jake twirled the ring on his finger, careful not to remove it by accident. What a ridiculous way to die. He thought about the dragon's secret, revealed as they'd both fought against the Sabbat when Jake had taken his concerns about the growing army near the city's border. Halen had taken the threat seriously and brought fifty Mimics with him. They'd underestimated the number of their enemy and Jake had barely escaped with his life... but not before seeing Halen turn to dust in the sky above, overwhelmed by his many wounds. He'd gone on a suicide flight, kamikazeing into the crowd of Sabbat, blasting fire as he went.

The ring had been the only thing left, and Jake had taken it without realising its power. Upon returning, he'd been assigned the position of Luminary by the Mimics, who swore fealty to him. The Oligarchs had no choice but to shift their allegience to him because of his demon army. A journal in Halen's penthouse had revealed the secrets of the ring and so now, with the position of Luminary under his belt and a powerful artefact on his finger, he was almost untouchable.

He spent the day speaking with those who might rise against him, demonstrating his power. They'd reacted with fear as he'd hoped they would, and they bowed to him, as they should. After a long day, he watched the sun set from the penthouse balcony of the Oligarchy Chambers building and then went inside just as the landline started ringing. Someone needed his attention.

He answered the phone. "Luminary McCloud speaking."

Oh, but didn't he love the sound of that?

A match was struck down the side of a table as the Oligarch for vampires lit a cigarette in his office. He'd had to come to work today, and it was far more than the two days he normally provided. Didn't they know he had things to do? There was this boy he'd seen at Risk, and he'd chosen not to approach! He'd be back. They always were, but instead of waiting with his usual crowd of needy humans, he'd been forced to work! Well, if it couldn't be helped he'd just have to get through it quickly. Lazarus walked into the hall and searched for an intern. Surely they could do his paperwork in exchange for being in his presence.

His bed-head hair feel perfectly at his shoulders. It looked nice with his white button up shirt, black boots with steel caps, and worn looking jeans. It was business casual casual, and while he knew some of the other Oligarchs didn't like it, he didn't really care. He was far more powerful than all of them, at two-thousand years plus. Lazarus didn't even have a wallet, just a silver case to match his eyes, that held his business cards. He didn't need money. Wherever he went he just seemed to have what he needed, and if he didn't he had ways of making people give it to him. In that same vein, nobody knew where Lazarus lived, and there was chatter that he stayed in a different place every night.

Rather than do the boring work assigned to him - approving pets and siring - he decided to meet the new boss. He was shocked he hadn't already been consulted. This newcomer had won the Mimics hearts with his theatrics, but so far the others were uneasy about him. Nobody in the Oligarchy liked change, except for Lazarus of course. If he'd been Luminary he wouldn't have run towards those mindless beasts. He would've let the vampire boy do it. Now he was Lazarus's boss, and the ancient decided the best thing he could do for his job was get in good. After all, he didn't want multiple weeks with more than two work days!

He didn't call. Lazarus didn't ever call. He finished his cigarette and quickly checked himself out in the mirror located in his office.

Yep. Perfect.

He made his way towards the lift that led to the Luminary's personal residence, and attempted to make his way directly into the carriage. A redheaded woman, who was obviously new, stopped him, saying she needed to okay a visitor. Did nobody tell her who he was? That would be something he'd be bringing up with his new Luminary. He waited, leaning against a wall and looking disinterested.

Over the phone he was told about how Lazarus had missed an appointment to hear a case about fledgeling permission.

"I'll handle it," Jake said down the line and hung up the phone so violently that it fell off its hook. He didn't much like that style anyway. The whole penthouse was too contemporary for his tastes. Halen had surprised him by not adopting a more traditional, old-world feel. Until Jake changed the space it wouldn't feel like his.

Jabbing the button that would take him downstairs, the lift doors opened for him immediately. He punched the button for the floor to where people met in the Chambers, figuring he would deal with the appointment himself and then send some of the Mimics to find that good-for-nothing Lazarus. He was still wary of the blonde, for he'd had the position of Oligarch longer than Jake, but now Jake was the damned Luminary and he had the army of Mimics at his back. He wasn't going to be so stupid as to face off a 2000-year-old vampire without at least one of the demons at his side, matching his strength. He'd heard rumours that Lazarus didn't have any mental talents to speak of but the idea of that was absurd. He certainly wasn't going to test it out in the middle of a confrontation.

When the lift doors opened, he saw Lisa-Joe blasting her opinion at Lazarus. Damn, she was fearless.

"Thank you Lisa-Joe, I'll take it from here."

She turned and gave him a sassy smile. "Of course, sugah. If you need me I'll be around." She sashayed away from them but had the forethought to tap one of the Mimic guards on the shoulder and point out the pair of them before she left. The guard stayed put but kept an eye on them.

"Lazarus. Could you head back to the Chambers, please?" Jake asked, keeping his voice as neutral as possible. "There's an appointment you need to be involved in."

This redheaded woman was beyond a nuisance! Lazarus was doing his best to ignore her, but for some reason she'd continued to scream at him. He only heard about a third of it. The rest were insults and hyperbolic grandstanding. If the mimics hadn't been standing guard he would've already taught her a thing or too. He ran a hand through his beautiful hair, thinking that this secretary had to go. He'd recommend that to the new Luminary. He'd obviously listen to one as old as Lazarus. The young ones were lost without ancients to tell them what to do. While he waited, and with the screams of the receptionist acting as white noise, Lazarus thought of the boy from risk. He had such soft looking hair, and Lazarus had plans for the pretty lips the boy possessed. He smiled darkly at the thought. It got him through the terrible amount of time he was forced to wait!

When the new Luminary finally came down, Lazarus sauntered over, looking as calm and easy as possible. The woman was leaving - thank god - and so now the two real leaders could finally talk. Well, this Jake person was certainly better looking than Halen. Lazarus thought all black was a bit too on the nose for the whole dark prince thing he'd heard this one liked. Still, he had a beautiful face, and Lazarus imagined it right between his knees. However, then the whelp spoke.

Was he fucking serious? Did he not know who he was talking to? Lazarus's first instinct was to grab the little boy by his throat. Let's see how well he barked orders with his windpipe being crushed. He might even look cute, all panicked and weepy. However, that wasn't an option currently. Lazarus noticed the ring on Jake's finger, wondering if that was the reason for his appointment. He didn't have too long to think, and frankly he was feeling something unfamiliar. He was uncomfortable, and felt caught out. What did the humans call it? Embarrassed. This little shit had embarrassed him.

"Luminary McCloud," he choked through. "Trust me. Jake is a lot easier to say."

He gestured grandly with the remaining half of his cigarette, the smoke billowing around him like a personal cloud.

"And of course. Appointments are important," he said unconvincingly. "Will you walk me back? I just wasn't sure if the way I should be handling these appointments would be changing now that you're in charge. I want to make you happy, love."

Lazarus didn't mind making his new boss happy, if it meant he could keep his lifestyle, and while providing flattery tasted worse than day old plasma, Lazarus had gotten out of more than one mess by using it.
