The White Rabbit / Re: Eldest Son

Scott chuckled along with Jake.  if there was anyone who could chase Scott down, it was Sam.

Listening to Jake's words, it was hard to imagine where Scott would be if not for Jake.  He wasn't Scott's true sire but he sure as hell felt like it, he was the closest to a real sire that Scott was ever going to get.  Scott was sure that most other vampires Jakes age wouldn't have bothered raising a new born that wasn't their own.  For that, Scott had always been grateful.

Scott grabbed his glass of blood again to feel like he was keeping busy and gave it another gulp.  "Okay," Scott said softly as he returned the empty glass to the table with a clink.  He suddenly remembered that they were at The white Rabbit and looked around the empty room.  The bar tender was still there though, fixing things and looking occupied.  "Are we doing this here?" Scott said, looking to Jake again.

Scott wondered about his bond with Conner.  If he drank Jake's blood, would his bond with Conner be severed?  Scott had an inkling that Conner might have already done the deed as Scott could no longer feel his presence.  Maybe this was a good thing, getting rid of the last piece of Conner that was left.

Scott found it hard to believe that the party was unimportant, especially with the amount of important people who attended.  Then Jake mentioned the guy and Scott's ears perked up.  But tht information was being saved for later? That was like giving a drug addict a taste of a new drug to get them hooked.

Scott sipped and blood and swallowed hard, taken aback a bit by Jake's request.  Scott wasn't quite sure how to respond.  The last time he had exchanged blood it was such an intimate experience with someone he felt very differently about.

"Wow, I'm not quite sure what to say," Scott said, placing his glass back down on the table.  He of course appreciated the offer, but would this take away the privacy he felt?  The feeling of being able to separate himself from his family when he needed time to himself?

My eldest son

Jake was right with those words.  He had been the closest thing to a sire that Scott knew.  Perhps it was time to make it official.

Jake's words were true, there was no denying that.  Scott looked down at Jake's hand touching his, feeling bad that he had isolated himself from his family.  Scott was the suffer alone type, he wasn't quite sure how to break away from that.

"I'm not gonna lie," Scott said, looking up at Jake. "Things have been really tough for me since we got back.  Things are different now, inside and out."  Scott didn't have the words in the moment to describe how he'd been feeling.  It was hard for him to even sleep during the day as his mind worked over time, thinking of all the place Conner could be, what he might be doing, or who me might be seeing.  Those thoughts would bleed into nightmares of bloodshed, leaving Scott restless.

"I've missed you guys too.  I'm sorry I've only been around for business type things."  Out of the corner of his eye, Scott noticed the bartender walking their way, placing two glasses of warm blood on the small table in front of them.  "Tell me," Scott said, looking to the bartender walking away and then back to Jake. "How was the party?"

Scott accepted the invitation to sit and laughed along with Jake.  Scott loved these moments, just getting to sit with his friend and enjoy the company.  They'd known each other for years but a lot of their time together had been bogged down by wars and death.  These relaxing moments were rare for the two of them, and Scott finally forgot about the rest of the world for a moment.

"So what's up, I felt the pull."  Scott raised his hands and gave finger quotes when he said 'the pull'.  He wasn't very good at remember the correct vampire lingo.  "Is everything ok?"

Scott had never been the type to dress up and mingle with the higher ups, that was Jake's job.  Scott preferred the low profile.  Of course he'd gotten the invitation but he tossed it.  Things didn't exactly go well the last time he was in a crowd setting.

Scott was finishing up a shave, after weeks, when he felt the pull to Jake.  The big party had ended the night before and Scott guessed that Jake wanted to catch him up on what happened.  He could've just called  Scott threw on a flannel and grabbed his car keys.

***

Scott moved up the stairs with heavy boot steps.  It had been awhile since Scott had been to the rabbit when it was full.  But the night was just starting, he gathered from the bartender that this was shaping up to be a busy one.  Scott looked around, wondering if Sam would be here as well, or their new friend Luke.  But it was just Jake.  Scott stepped to the black leather couch Jake was perched on.  The blonde put his hands on his hips and smiled a bit, looking down at Jake. "Wow," he said. "I think this is the gayest you've ever looked."

Scott quickly stood up from his chair as Jake removed the ropes around Luke's body.  Scott's strong stance said that he was prepared for Luke to attack or for Luke to flee.  Scott was a bit surprised when neither of those two things had happened.  Scott's eye's didn't leave Luke until Lisa-Joe started yelling.

Scott gave a salute with two fingers as Lisa-Joe stormed out.  The hot headed status no longer belonged to Scott.  Lisa-Joe needed to get her shit together if she wanted to be of any help.  Honestly Scott had been sick of her and Jake bickering back and forth.  It was like listening to parents arguing, and Scott had grown tired of it after being with them for so long.

Scott's eyes watched as Luke adjusted his limbs.  It wasn't until he touched his alien like arm that Scott noticed a small tick in Luke's aura.  It was like nothing Scott had ever seen before.  Luke's aura was skipping like a scratched DVD.  Like a pixelated glitch on a computer screen, almost as if an entirely different aura was trying to push it's way through.  Just as fast as it had started, it ended.  Scott tilted his head a little wondering what the hell he had just witnessed.

With Scott distracted, Luke spoke and then Sam, before Scott had answered Jake's question.  Scott crossed his arms, "There might be one guy who I can reach out to, but what would you want me to ask Jake?  Sam is right, this place could be out of the CPD's jurisdiction.  If this place is what Luke says it is, being out of reach of the CPD may be what they wanted."

Scott slumped himself back on to his chair debating whether or not he wanted to be a part of this.  His loyalty to Jake was strong, and his natural sense of justice matched that.  He was too inherently good.  The whole reason he became a police officer to begin with was to help people in need.  This facility didn't sound like they were doing anyone any favors.  But did he actually have another fight in him?

"Jake, if we do this, we need help.  We need other people with different abilities than ours."  Scott was sort of piggy backing off of what Sam had said about her friend Maria.  "Someone that can do things that we can't like Sam said.  We could use that person."  Scott stood up again and stepped toward Jake and asked him, "Do you know anyone like that?  With different abilities than ours?"

Scott sat there with his arms crossed on top of the chair, feeling very validated, listening to Luke tell them what he knew.  His ears perked up when Luke mentioned the bullets.  Scott could think of a hand full of times he had to remove bullets from his own arms and chest.  Hell, Jake had even helped removed a few from his back a couple years ago.

"Jesus," Scott whispered when Luke had finally let it all out.  He knew the government was no joke.  This troop of misfits were out maned and out gunned.  The old Scott would think other wise.  The old Scott was shoot first, ask questions later.  The old Scott would've taken them all on by himself. Scott rubbed his hands against his beard, bringing them back down he could've sworn they were covered in blood before be blinked the vision away. The old Scott was a naive, foolish, hot headed man.

Scott looked to Jake, "They've been under our damn noses for god knows how long.  How did we not know about this, Jake?"

Scott could only imagine the torture going on behind the walls of that facility.  They could be experimenting on humans and vampires alike for all they knew.  Scott had the thought to ask Jake if he could maybe go about this in a diplomatic way, reach out to them to talk.  But Scott feared it wouldn't be that easy.  He hoped this wouldn't have to end in violence.

Scott's attention was on Luke now, his aura had changed; it had become softer.  Scott knew for sure now that he was being sincere.  Scott's wall had been broken a little bit.  Where would Scott be now if Jake hadn't taken him in after his sire was killed?  Jake was there in Scott's time of need and Jake wanted to be that now for Luke.

But following Jake all of these years had not been easy.  Scott had followed Jake into so much darkness.  Darkness shrouded in violence.  Scott had lost count of the bodies he'd piled up over the years fighting for Jake.  Everything for him came crashing down when he returned home to find that Conner had left.  Scott suddenly felt so tired, so drained.  If Luke was bringing another fight, Scott wasn't sure he had it in him, he'd purposefully locked his own weapons away for god's sake.

"Who are they?" Scott finally asked Luke, with a pointed gaze.  "And how are you so sure that you can't stop them on your own, given your strong....abilities?"

Luke had some balls.  Scott scoffed and let him ramble on.  If Luke was afraid of being killed by the four vampires, he sure wasn't showing it.

Scott had the thought of just ripping the ropes off himself and letting Luke walk out of here.  But it could be a huge mistake to do so.  No one knew if Luke had been aligned with anyone else.  It's very possible that if Luke were to walk out of here, he could bring a hailstorm of hurt back to them at The White Rabbit.  It's possible he could have an army of his own.  Scott wasn't sure he was willing to take that risk.

But what if he was telling the truth?  If someone was after Luke, what would stop them from going through the vampire family to get to him.  Either way, Luke seemed more and more like a risk.

We don't feed to kill, we feed to live. Scott thought to himself.

Scott turned his head to Jake, "Yes why do we want to help him?" Scott asked.  The ball was in Jake's court now.

Lisa-Joe was agreeing with Scott, which was rare.  Scott shot her a look without words, almost thanking her.  They had just come back from a war and now it seemed Jake wanted to step into someone else's.

A victim?

How could a man of his strength be a victim?  Scott wondered if Luke was making the whole story up, to get released from his binds.

Scott stepped away from Jake and pulled up a chair and placed it at a diagonal, about four feet from Luke.  He flipped it around and sat backwards on it, resting his arms on top of the chair's back.  He was in interrogation mode now.  His police training was kicking back in after years.  He let Jake ask his question but Scott jumped in with a second one before Luke had a chance to answer.

"And why are you hurting Vampires?"

Lisa-Joe was right, Scott did look like shit.  His hair was disheveled and his beard was longer than he had ever let it grow.  He usually kept a short stubble, but this was getting to full beard territory; the hair a glistening blonde.

Scott didn't respond with words, just a look of distain even though she was right.  Scott watched as Lisa moved over to the man in the chair to tie more knots.  Jake then pulled Scott aside to tell him the story of the fight.  Scott peeked over at the human as Jake spoke.  How could a human over power Jake? Scott thought.  Then Jake got to the part about mystery man's arm, causing an eyebrow to raise.  He looks human, but he's clearly something more.

Scott could barely get a word out after Jake had finished before feeling a splash on water against his leg.  Lisa-Joe had completely drenched the guy awake.  When the bound man had finally opened his eyes is when Scott noticed his beauty.  He was clearly Jake's type.  Maybe that's why he was here instead of lying in a puddle of blood at the bus depot.

Luke

Watching Sam care for Luke could've warmed Scott's heart if it were still beating.  She could be so compassionate; of course she was following Jake's lead.  Scott wasn't so sure though, especially after Luke's response.

Scott turned away from Luke and flanked Jake's shoulder, "this could be dangerous, Jake, his aura is all over the place," Scott whispered.  "If someone is looking for him, there is probably good reason.  We don't need anymore blood on our hands."  Luke was hurting Vampires for some reason, he came with baggage, Scott could feel it.

Scott was surrounded by cardboard boxes in his apartment.  Within the two weeks of being back from the most recent war, he had decided that it was best to leave the memories from this apartment behind.  Conner was gone and he wasn't coming back, that was more than clear now.  Scott hadn't seen Jake, Sam or Lisa-Joe since he left The White Rabbit two weeks ago.  Sam and Jake had called, but Scott ignored them.  Lisa-Joe didn't care enough to call.  Scott was stuck in a blackhole of self pity, scratching at the walls.  He'd decided it was best to pack up and move elsewhere.  The apartment he had shared with Conner was too much to handle.  There was no other way to move on.

Scott sat on his leather sofa, scrolling through old pictures on his phone, debating which ones to delete when he suddenly heard a screech from the radio in his bedroom.  He kept the hand held radio next to his bed on his nightstand.  The walkie-talkie looking device was given to him by Jake shortly after they returned home from the recent war.  Sam and Lisa-Joe got one as well.  It was a direct line to Jake incase there was ever any trouble.  The thing was practically a dust collector until now.

Scott was somewhat startled by the static and rushed into the room and stared at it.  Then Jake's voice came clear from it's speaker, "City bus depot, twenty minutes," was all Jake said.  What the hell does that mean?

Scott knew he wouldn't be much help in a hostile situation.  He had locked up his entire weapon collection in a vault downtown.  He was serious that he was done with violence after this war, though he had yet to let anyone know this.  He stood there thinking for a moment as Lisa-Joe's voice came from the speaker as well, confirming Jake's words.

Scott was feeling pulled, he knew he had to support them in any way he could.  He'd decided he would meet them at The White Rabbit, assuming that's where they would end up if everything went according to plan.

***********

Scott ran through the front door of The Rabbit and looked around.  Sam was no where to be seen, perhaps she was upstairs running the books?  The place was surprisingly empty and the music was low.  Jake must have made everyone leave.  What the hell is going on?

Scott suddenly heard the voices of Jake and Lisa arguing like a married couple.  Scott rushed towards the noise and stumbled upon the two of them tying up an unconscious man.  Scott was very surprised as this was the last think he might have expected.  The aura around this fair haired man was dark, omitting grief, confusion, and rage. Scott tore his attention to Jake and Lisa, they were dressed in armor.  Scott felt a flashback hit his brain like a crashing wave, seeing the three of them dressed like this on the battlefield. Scott did not get the memo as he was dressed in his usual, black skinny jeans, work boots, and a fitted white henley under a red unbuttoned flannel.

"Jake what the hell is going on?  I heard your call on the radio."  Scott pointed his chin to the prisoner, "and who the hell is he?"

Scott shuddered from the loud bang of the door opening,  It brought him back to the battlefield in a flash.  He pressed his thumb and pointer finger to the bridge of his nose and clenched his eyes.  He needed to shake it off.  He stood up and looked at Sam,  He gave her a weak smile and grazed her cheek softly with the back of his hand.  "I'm gonna step outside for a sec, I need some air."

If Sam was about to chew out the two owners, Scott did not feel like sticking around for it.  Scott stepped to the door and pushed passed Lisa-joe who reeked of drunken blood.  He rolled his eyes at her as he passed, completely over her lack of respect.  "I'll be out front if you need me," Scott shouted over his shoulder.

Scott took in the auras Jake was omitting and it wasn't pretty, or easy.  Jake's words helped to validate Scott's decision, but it still hurt none the less.  Jake had punched the wall so hard that plaster went flying, bits of white dust flaked onto Scott's black tank top.  Scott simply wiped them away, sort of surprised by Jake's violent reaction.

"Conner never told me that he got the call.  We exchanged blood for God's sake, I didn't think he could keep things from me."

If Sam's blood ran through her veins, her hand surely would've felt warm.  Scott looked down and their intwined fingers and smirked a little, her hands were so petite compared to his.

Scott looked up to Jake, "what now, Jake?"

Scott half expected Lisa-Joe to stay, there wasn't much in the ways of her sympathy for others.  Her intentions were clear, she was hungry.  Scott huffed as he watched Lisa-Joe walk away.  Sam and Jake are the two that really mattered anyway.

With Jake sitting at the desk and Sam against the wall, Scott moved to close the double doors to the office, immediately shutting out the music and distant chatter.  It was completely silent in the room now.  Scott started to slowly pace back and forth, wracking his brain to find the right words.

Finally he stopped and looked back and forth between the two vampires.  He scratched the stubble on his face.  "Conner left."  Scott said softly.  "I don't know exactly where he went, I just know he's gone for good."  Scott turned to sit on a black leather couch that was against the same wall as the doors he had just closed, and rested his forearms on his knees.  "Jake, I never told you this..." Scott said, pushing his fingers back and forth through his hair. "...Conner gave me an ultimatum after you asked me to go to war with you."  Scott was reliving the scene in his head as if it had happened yesterday.  "He said 'how many more wars is he going to ask you to fight for him?'  I told him I needed to stay loyal to you, that you needed me.  Conner shot back, saying that HE needed me, that I didn't need to get myself killed for you, Jake."

Scott paused for a second, taking a breath.  "It was this fight that just kept going back and forth and around in circles.  Nothing was really coming to a head.  At the end of it he gave me an ultimatum.  He told me that I could either stay here with him or go fight with you," Scott said, looking at Jake now.  "He told me if I chose to go with you that he wouldn't be here when I got back, IF I even made it back."

"I was so taken aback by it that I just stormed out.  I stayed out all night, not even going back during the day to sleep.  The next night is when I showed up at your doorstep ready to win this war.  When we got back yesterday, everything of Conner's was gone except for a pair of shoes, and I was fucking devastated."  Scott felt his eyes welling up but he wiped the moisture away before they became actual tears.  "There was no sort of closure, I didn't even get to say goodbye.  He knew I had made my choice and he stuck to his word."
