Emil flashed a sympathetic look, waving his hand before his face as if casting away invisible demons. He was casting away invisible demons of course- they belonged to Bill. His worries were thick in the air and Emil just wanted to smother him in empathy and affection. He had to make sure the mortal knew that just because he had a new vampire friend didn’t change their friendship. He wasn’t possessive in any sense, and it wasn’t like Bill belonged to him anyway. If Bill had been his pet officially on the record this conversation may have gone differently. But the fact of the matter was that they weren’t attached at all.

“Oh, darling! I’m glad that you have a new friend. It doesn’t bother me that he’s a vampire at all.”

Whatever Bill did by himself and who he associated with was Bill’s business alone. The blood feeding thing blew over his head entirely, simply because Emil didn’t need to feed from Bill. He fed from Bill for Bill’s benefit only, and if he was getting that pleasure from David now…there were no hurt feelings.

Ooooh! He could kind of assume now that they were talking about a romance of sorts. Giving someone a key to their apartment was a major step in moving a relationship forward, but it sounded like Bill didn’t think so. No wonder he was confused. Emil would have immediately thought that being given a key meant that he was romantically involved with someone, unless another reason was specifically given: to check in on a sick person or house watch.  It had a certain meaning…it implied something significant.

He had assumed that this would be the bottom line of the confession, but evidently, it wasn’t even the beginning. The way that Bill closed his statements with he’s a vampire seemed to suggest that Bill thought Emil might have a problem with this David being a vampire. Indeed, he did worry about the safety of Bill in the hands of other creatures, but if Bill was here to admit he’d been having a flirtation with another vampire…surely that meant this David wasn’t all that dangerous.

“I see, then. But let me ask you something Bill.”

He cocked his head to the side and looked to the boy attentively.

“Is there a reason you told me of his nature in that sort of tone? I don’t quite, well, understand. I mean it’s glorious that you’ve made a new friend, possibly something more than that, too! But why do you speak of his nature like that, as if…you were worried about something?”

“Well, then! I’m glad that you’ve made a new friend, goobers! And I’m certainly glad you haven’t forgotten about the old ones either.”

He gave Bill a wink at that statement. No longer was he worried about the status of their friendship; it seemed strong and intact, as strong as it ever had been. But still, he didn’t feel like Bill was saying all he wanted to say. It felt as if there was something on the top of his friend’s mind that was just waiting to get out. Why hadn’t Bill spilled his beans yet? He must have needed some prodding.

“But come, now, pumpkin. I know there’s something fantastical you want to tell me. Say you, we needn’t beat around the bush! I’d like to know what you have to celebrate!”

He didn’t feel like he was prying, considering how excited Bill was and the fact that Bill had come to him. If Bill didn’t answer, he’d back down, but he was convinced that the human had something gossip worthy to confess.

Once Bill had stopped talking, a grin began to steadily climb across his maw.   Emil had lived a long, full live thus far, and even with as little as he knew about Bill he could read the boy’s emotions. The way that the human mentioned the word David, and how he’d appeared here in such an unusually excitable mood, suggested to Emil that something was going on. He didn’t know quite what, but if he had to guess, either David was a new crush of Bill’s or a longtime friend that Bill hadn’t seen for a while. The emotion he was detecting was the springing of a new relationship full of wonder and potential.

“Oh, he did, did he? Hmmm?” Emil said giddily, his teasing amusement clear.

“Why don’t you tell me a bit about this David that’s got you half a bubble off of plumb! He must be quite the fellow.” He winked at Bill, eager to hear the juicy gossip he knew would soon be shuffled his way.

He hurried into the kitchen and began to work on the tea. It didn’t take much; after a few minutes the water was boiling and he took the tea kettle off of the stovetop onto a serving tray, accompanied by a fine tea cup, cream, sugar and of course the loose tea leaves fixated in a tea holder inside of the scalding hot cup. Bill would have to wait a few minutes for it to cool down, but Emil was certain that time would seem like nothing if they sat and chatted for a bit.

The vampire arrived in the dining room, setting the tray down on the table and sitting beside Bill.

“Alright, pookie, here you are. There’s some sugar and cream and in that saucer is soy in case- well, allergies or what have you! You better wait for it to cool, though. I wouldn’t want for you to burn your tongue or anything like that!” He exclaimed and then relaxed in his seat, waiting for Bill to start his chatter.

It seemed like he had something to talk about the way he had arrived in such a bubbly mood.

Emil breathed a sigh of relief, dramatically bringing one hand to the side of his face as he exhaled loudly.

“Phew! You had me quite troubled, sugar!” He spoke and let out a chuckle, shaking his head at the way he had so easily jumped to conclusion about it all.

“You needn’t worry; you’re always welcome in my house, even with such short notice!” And after that statement, he retreated to the kitchen, putting water in the tea kettle and starting the oven up to warm it.

“What sort of tea would you like, sweetie? Earl Gray? Green leaves? Oooh, what about a seasonal herbal mix! I’ve got something called ‘gingerbread’ here!”

He called out to Bill from the kitchen, speaking the boy’s direction so that his voice carried better.

He’d dragged himself away from the mirror as soon as he heard the front door open, slowly proceeding towards the area and looking for suspicious rays of light. He turned the corner when he found that the front door had been closed properly and greeted Bill with a huge grin. Of course, once the boy began to talk, his look quickly turned to concern.

“Are you okay, pookie? What happened?”

A somber mood had taken over him; the last comment of Bill’s, that he couldn’t wait, made the surprise visit seem more like an emergency that a visit at all. Bill had certainly done a good job at hiding it over the phone, but maybe he hadn’t felt safe talking about it, perhaps only now was he having the chance to relax.

“Why don’t you take a seat in the dining room and I’ll pour you a cup of tea and we can talk about whatever is troubling you, okay sweetheart?”

He put an arm around Bill, doing it all so quickly as to not let the boy get a word in edgewise, though he’d quieted up after he began to lead the human towards the dining room.

It would have helped to have had a bit more notice. He wasn’t properly ready for someone to be dropping by, which meant he was going to have to rush himself a bit. The less time he had, the less handsome he felt. Too, had Bill dropped by when he was out of town or staying at someone elses’ house, all would have been in vain. But he tried not to think about it for now; all that mattered was that he was home right now and Bill would greet him soon enough.

“The white one it is!” Emil exclaimed as he searched for the shirt in question, throwing that on alongside some hip hugging jeans. Too, a pair of leather black shoes were slipped on and he stood in from of the mirror teasing his hair until it looked just right.

“When you come in to the enclosed patio, make sure that the first door is closely tightly, mmk pookie? After that, the front door is unlocked.”

He had a camera in the enclosed porch to help him with that anyway- if Bill didn’t properly close the first door, the front door would keep the light out and he simply wouldn’t go out on the patio until it was. Heavy curtains hung on all of the windows during the day so that the light wouldn’t come into the enclosed area and Emil felt it was a nice safety procedure.

Mmm, things might be just fine.
It excited him, it did, that Bill wanted to get together; it just proved that whatever hiccups had happened a few weeks ago were over. Or at the very least, they wouldn’t be effecting their relationship. It was a satisfactory situation to be in.

“Oh yes, of course you can! Come over whenever you want, darling, you’re always welcome. But, but, but! You must tell me how long you’ll be. I need to know how long I have to decide what color of shirt I should wear today!”

He let out a chuckle. Sadly, he was only half joking.

HE had just gotten out of the shower when the phone rang. Due to how long it typically took him to figure out what he was going to wear for the night, he usually started getting ready a couple of hours before the sun actually set so that he’ll be ready for a night out on town. He assumed that anyone calling at this hour was someone who knew about his supernatural nature or from abroad; the phone ring wasn’t a business jangle. Thus, he picked up the phone and pressed it to his ear as he held a shirt to his chest in the mirror, trying to pick between a deep purple and ocean blue colored shirt.

The other end let him know who was calling right away. It was Bill! He hadn’t heard from him for a while, and he’d been a bit worried that everything that had gone down with Lamar might make him want to stay away.

“Hello, darling! Why, it’s been a long time no talk!”

He assumed that Bill had something to tell him since he called first, so he held off on asking how he was unless it was evident it was a quick chat that the fellow was seeking.

There. It’d been a memory test. Ransom could feel himself relax in the chair; that was, until, he saw the fangs. They might have been easier to ignore, easier to miss, if the topic of conversation had been anything else. He was certain he’d sworn others had teeth that were similar, but teeth had all shapes and sizes, didn’t they? They were just teeth, not fangs. This whole conversation it had to be some sort of psychological test he had to pass. This whole thing, it wasn’t happening- it couldn’t be.

He flinched when Brianna moved; he still didn’t trust her. He was certain she was about to pull out a weapon, but instead it was a tiny glass container full of…well, he didn’t know. Of course he felt the need to run. But here they were at a public library, and somehow they still weren’t very public right now. Brianna had moved him into the ‘secret’ area that required a card to get in. If he screamed right now, would anyone be able to hear him? He was trapped.

“Uhm…I don’t know.”

It was the cheater’s answer out, but he didn’t know what he was supposed to say. He didn’t want Brianna to think he was crazy, and right now, it was her that seemed like the crazy one. How was he supposed to feel, though, when someone told him that ‘vampires’ were dangerous and then suggested he imagined he was sitting with one right now? He’d be scared, terrified. He was terrified.

He swallowed hard, nodding his head slightly to Tom’s comment. It didn’t help calm him down. Only a couple people he knew could, and only one person had ever calmed him down completely. Most therapists would call that person his ‘safe place’. And that’s exactly what Ryker was to Ransom; his safe place, the person he confided to, the person who knew all of his secrets. Still, Ryker didn’t know how to help him. He hadn’t called Ryker because….despite how close they were, some things he did still keep secret. He didn’t want to burden his sibling who was halfway across the country with troubling information he could do nothing about.

Meanwhile on the phone, Walter hadn’t expected this would be this challenging. He kicked his feet off his study table and spun the chair around a bit. Every minute he was on the phone was one more day that his wife was going to withhold sex. They were already on rocky terms. Why make it worse?

“Ahh, well, then take your chances. Just remember there’s more than one person that knows you were in that apartment.”

Click.

A hang up.
Walter didn’t think the man was a killer, nor that Ransom was in any real danger being in their presence. The danger lied in if he was left alone, what he might do, what new lows it might bring him to. But the line was a gentle reminder just in case these men were the type that would feel the need to dispose of evidence when they were trapped into a corner. It would scare the faint of heart, though he knew if the two strangers were determined…there was nothing that could be done now.

Ransom could hear that things weren’t going so well. He clenched his teeth. What would happen to him if in the end Walter couldn’t convince these men not to go to the police? He’d probably be arrested. Who would believe that he’d just stepped into his apartment to a dead body? With his sort of history, everyone would assume he’d killed them. His stomach turned as the continued driving, farther and farther away from his home. Had agreeing to come with them been such a good idea? What if they were worse than whoever had left that body on his couch?

“You don’t think you’re affected? That’s a nice line of thought- really, it is- but you’re going to have to try harder than that.”
Walter let out a brief chuckle. He still sounded causal, no matter how pressing or serious this conversation got ever moment it went on.
“Honestly, Georg, how does this situation look? If people found out you’d walked into an apartment, discovered a body, and instead of calling the police looked the other way, what do you think is going to be their conclusions? I understand the appeal of idealistic thinking, Georg, I do. But this is far from idealistic and your ass in planted in this whether you want it to be or not.”

He barely took a breath in between his statements in his best attempt to not let Georg get a word in edge wise.

“So, my advice to you is, if you don’t want your life to become a sticky mess, don’t leave Eric alone. It’s one night of your life and  then you’re done with it. Alright?”

He spoke with confidence, still convinced that he could convince Georg to do what he wanted him to do. He had little other option, after all. Ransom would be in a bad place if this option didn’t pull through.

Mortal?

That was a weird word. It sounded like something out of a science fiction book or something. Already Ransom was feeling discomfort creep back into his psyche, though for reasons completely unrelated to what was on Brianna’s mind. Already he felt like he didn’t know what was going on. Already, Ransom Clarke felt stupid.

He focused carefully on Brianna’s next words. If he looked like he was listening maybe he could convince her he knew what was going on even if he didn’t, even if he was just a poor uneducated fool who got thrown off by unfamiliar words.  He nodded his head to her statements. He thought that made sense. Brianna was supposed to be a ‘different’ kind of therapy so it made sense that she had to know a lot about the brain and stuff.

But wait, vampires- what? Now things were getting confusing again. What did it matter what he thought about vampires? Did Brianna think he was crazy and believed in things like that? He was sure that was probably a mental disorder in itself. He didn’t remember mentioning anything to Shane that would make that disorder a possibility, though. Maybe Brianna wasn’t as good at her job as she thought she was.

“Yeah. I remember.”

Maybe the question had nothing to do with vampires at all. It could have been a memory test. They had talked about a lot of things on that night and maybe Brianna wanted to test if he remembered the little details.

Although he’d accomplished his original goal- to prevent the men from going to the police- Georg’s response had opened a whole new door of complications.

“No, no, no. That’s just not going to work. It might work for other people but believe me- it’s not going to work for Eric. Now listen- you can’t leave him alone right now. Go get a hotel for all of you, bring him home, I don’t care what you do, but you can’t leave him alone. You understand that, champ?”

Eric worried too much. People who were courteous enough to deliver him home weren’t going to rape and pillage him and with the sort of generosity they’d displayed earlier, Walter was supposing the suggestion might be taken up without much convincing. He didn’t want to know what thoughts would go through the kid’s head if he was left alone right now, and frankly, if Eric was preoccupied in the presence of other people it was unlikely he was going to be bothered in the next ten hours with frantic phone calls.

Anything to save a good night’s sleep.

As much as he said it bothered him, he still would have stayed the night up with the kid. It was just a matter of whether it was really necessary or not.
