Hedge Drama

"Prince?"

"Your Majesty?"

"Where are you?"

The small cries came from a rather perplexed-looking professor. His eyes were squinty behind his glasses and white hair stuck out everywhere on him. Even his ears. He was in the center of the courtyard, looking around confused.

Unknown to him, the very boy he was looking for was hiding in the middle of a maze. Crouched down to be sure that his shadow wouldn\'t be seen on the hedges, he chuckled to himself. Stupid tutor trying to act like he knows everything about military strategies. Just looking at the guy you could tell he\'s never been on a battlefield in his life.

Franz had made his escape in the most devious of ways. Once ridding himself of his heavy robe in the library, he had told the tutor he was going to go check on a book. The idiot didn\'t even realize Franz was outside until one of the maids finally squealed it. Now the old geezer thought he was going to find Franz?

"What a joke." Franz muttered. He looked at the hedge across from him, "Don\'t you think so?" Chuckling lightly, he nodded, "Yes he\'s also quite ugly, isn\'t he?" Going on his hands and knees, Franz patted the hedge, "You\'re a wonderfully clever hedge." Laughing at this conversation, Franz finally stood up. He brushed off his knees. Dirt clumps fell back to the ground from his breeches. He expected the head servant was going to tsk at the new stains he had acquired on them. Shrugging, Franz climbed a little bit on the hedge to glanced over the top. The tutor was no where to be seen. Franz laughed his mischievous laugh once more.

Hopping back to the ground, Franz began the path of the maze. He had been through it so many times before. At first, he always had an escort. Then he demanded he was allowed to do it himself. It was exciting to be able to show that he knew the exact way through the maze. It helped that he use to keep a map right in his pocket of it created by one of his tutors for him. He had walked through the maze plenty of times to know the way now.

One of Franz\'s favorite things to do while walking in the maze was to talk to the hedges as if they were people of the court. It was a brilliant way to get his opinions out of him so he would less anger people.

"Why, Lady Yamino." Franz turned to one of the hedges in mock surprise, "What a delight it is to see you here." Holding the hedge\'s leaves as if it was a hand, he bent down and gave one of the cleaner leaves a kiss. "I hope things with the stable boy has been going well. Oh, what is that blush for? Could it perhaps be that fair lady hath not wanted people to know about that?" Franz tittered as if one of the older ladies of the court and fanned himself with his hand, "Well then, dearie, don\'t put your affair on display in the royal stables. Heaven knows what could happen."

Franz quickly changed places with himself. He bowed deeply to the spot he had just been in, "Old Lady Hancock! You\'re as witty as ever."

The prince switched spots again, "Why, Lord Dagger, is that you?" He gave a small little titter again before jumping back into the role of Lord Dagger.

"Of course, it is I." Franz brought a hand up and ran his fingers through his dirty blond hair. The strands brushed gently back to their place by his face, "Can you not recognize me and my wily ways? For I am so handsome," The young man stroke a pose. Putting one hand on his hip and the other on his forehead as if in distress, Franz continued, "All the ladies and scullery maids surely understand. After all, I have shown them much of myself."

Franz broke character, breaking into laughter at his own drama. Now if only the plays that the family attended were this humorous. Leaning against the hedge, he stared up at the gray sky. What great fun he was having. Much better than listening to some old man talk about battles.

Captain Wilson cleared her throat subtly, gloved hands clasped behind her back as she observed the young royal\'s antics from the well groomed path couple of metres behind him. Her breathing was slowly becoming calmer, though her chest was still rising and falling quite rapidly beneath the weight of her shiny blue-tinged breastplate. For such cool weather, she\'d got remarkably hot in her sprint to find Prince Franz.

The jilted side of her enjoyed his rendition of Dagger very much - not that she would dare tell the youth such a thing - and she wondered what other games he\'d been playing in here. She was somewhat sorry that she hadn\'t got there earlier, though she\'d run as fast as her long legs would carry her. It could have been a very entertaining show (if not for the panic still coursing through her adrenalin-drenched body). An alert that the Prince was missing did not make for relaxing news for any of the guards, however; nor was it something that should be attended to by anyone lesser than she.

Wilson was rather lucky that she spent so much time training the heir-apparent; her calculated guess that he would be found in the maze being based on her knowing it was a favourite place of his, as well as the fact that he\'d been studying nearby at the time. She\'d put the two factors together and decided to search here first, as soon as one of the palace guards - that the prince had apparently also eluded - alerted her to the situation. She was heartily relieved that her gamble had paid off, and that she\'d been attending to some business nearby.

"Your majesty," she intoned, a hint of reproach in her voice as she looked over her young charge. Her green eyes were bright with relief and merriment, however. She couldn\'t be too mad at him for wanting to escape the books he was not in love with, in favour of a game outdoors. They shared that passion and he was fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on horseback. "I trust that you\'re enjoying yourself and that all is well?" She remained where she was, an eyebrow cocked and sabatonned feet spread comfortably as she waited for his attention.

As the Captain cleared her throat, Franz paused for a moment. He knew that clearing of the throat from many times before. Turning around quickly, he instantly put on his innocent face. A small little pouty smile on his lips and an apologetic look in his eyes. Captain Wilson looked slightly worn out and Franz felt a tad bad for making her run even more than she usually did. He preferred if the male guards and the old servants searched for him instead of females. After all, they were woman and should do their place and go bake a cake of something. At this thought, the regret was quickly overlapped by ‘well, it serves her right for wanting to be a guard.’

Still smiling in an apologetic expression, Franz spoke up, “Hello, Captain.” He was relieved to see in her expression that she didn’t seem too mad at him. While he loved creating trouble and escaping from boring classes, he still didn’t enjoy the punishments from his father.

At Captain Wilson’s words, the prince eagerly nodded. His hair brushed lightly against his face as he did and his cheeks flushed a soft pink. “Yes, indeed. Of course, I’m enjoying myself… it’s much better than listening to that old man talk and talk.” His apologetic expression was already gone and he was grinning from ear-to-ear. He motioned his hand in a sort of off-handish gesture. “I hope I didn’t worry you too much, but I’m sure you weren’t all that concerned. After all, you’re one of the smarter ones.” Refusing to explain the last part, he began walking towards the start of the maze where had come in. No point in trying to escape now. While he was fast, he knew Captain Wilson would probably catch him.

The captain raised her eyebrows and sighed very softly as she decided not to comment. She spun on her heel as he walked by and fell into step beside him instead. Franz\'s immature attitudes never ceased to amaze her - but he was the heir apparent, it wasn\'t worth putting him down when she had other methods of punishing him. She would teach him respect before he was a man, or she would die trying.

"I wasn\'t worried; but I\'m fairly certain that your parents will be. If they find out, of course," she added serenely, attempting to make her latter statement seem like an afterthought, rather than the bribe it actually was.  Her hands were still clasped behind her as she kept pace with him and stared at the cloudy sky above. "I suppose then they\'ll do something irrational like... oh... tell you that your book learning is as important as your combat training and put a hold on our trip to the countryside in a couple of days." She didn\'t look at him, finding squinting at the clouds to be far preferable to showing him the smirk she was holding back.  "Pity; I was looking forward to getting some archery practise and endurance work in, now that the snows are melting."

Franz listened to the Captain begin to talk. He crossed his arms and casted a suspicious glare towards her. Was she trying to threaten him? What a fool. No one could do that to the prince. Frowning with his lower lip stuck out in a pout he continued to listen to the other as they walked. As she continued to talk, Franz did become slightly worried. She wouldn\'t really tell them, after all even if Captain Wilson was a confused female she was still understanding of needing to be outside.

He turned towards her as she finished speaking, "You can\'t do that." He snapped, wishing she would stop looking at the clouds with that smug tone of air. "You know that stuff isn\'t important!" He referred to the books and learning, "At least not over archery!" Franz stopped walking and stomped his foot on the ground in a stubborn way, "If you tell my parents, I\'m going to get you..." He paused trying to think of something before saying, "I\'m going to get you fired!"

Shaking his head to brush his hair out of his face, he gave a smug smile towards Captain Wilson. It was a battle of authority now.

She stopped when he did, raising an eyebrow at his stomping foot.  He really was in a foul mood, to have got this babyish. It only proved to her that he was beyond negotiating with, especially when he threatened to have her fired. Her lips pursed thoughtfully, the green eyes looking down at him filled with genuine regret.

"Were that possible, it would, indeed be a terrible shame... this being your first year of eligibility to enter the Tournament and me being the reigning champion in most of the events you like, after all." She gnawed the inside of her lips, looking him over in the manner of assessing the value of an expensive thoroughbred, not threatening him but neither telling him anything he didn\'t already know. "Still, if you want to be trained by someone lesser, I can arrange that also. I\'ll pick my best - Lieutenant Frederickson - and you can see what he can do for you. He\'s nearly my match in all the jousting events, archery, armoured fighting and running at the rings. I don\'t enter any of the others, as you know, so his inclusion in your training schedule was always going to happen. If you like, I could hasten the process?"

Wilson wasn\'t at all angry at him for striking out towards her, she realised how frustrated he was with being inside, studying away the winter - she\'d felt it too, at his age. She was, however, beginning to seriously doubt that he was ready for the Tournament of the Corn. She hoped that he would be able to display a more even temper on the battle field, where he would be beaten relatively quickly, simply due to his size and inexperience, if he didn\'t. She\'d made no bones about this fact (which hadn\'t pleased him but she was honest and willing to bet that, with some dedicated work, he might at least place - though she told him nothing of her secret hopes, so as not to bolster an ego that would only suffer further if she was wrong).

He was obviously having one of his more frustrated moments.  He knew that she was unlike other women and they usually treated one another with the utmost respect, simply because she was the absolute best at her job and she could teach him like no other in the surrounding counties could. His own father had made this perfectly clear in his lengthy introduction (including every act of prestige and honour she\'d ever garnered) of her, the first time she\'d begun training Franz nearly two years before.

Franz\'s behaviour now didn\'t alter her respect for him - everyone was entitled to a slip every now and then, after all - but it did make her wonder what was going on in his mind, if he had definitey lost sight of just how important she was to the cause of his betterment. Sixteen was the minimum age for entry into the Tournament that would take place in a few moons and most royals didn\'t enter until they were at least eighteen (because they had more of a chance of avoiding humiliation by this stage, and the entire process would be safer for the monarchy), but she\'d agreed to Franz\'s insistence that he wanted to try it, wanted to enter early, and he was certainly very skilled. She\'d been very eager to take him on the day-long countryside ride next week, just the two of them, pushing the animals and themselves to the limits through melting snowdrifts and up inhospitable cliff faces that served the two-fold purpose of encouraging discrimination in hand holds and increasing body strength. And, of course, they would actually have hunted this time, putting his long hours with the bow to use and testing his skill at tracking and killing a moving animal.

No, Franz\'s behaviour now didn\'t cause her respect for him and his skills to falter; but it did make her think seriously about having a quiet word in his father\'s ear about his lack of equilibrium... and the potential it had for disaster on the Lists.

(ooc: sorry for taking so long.)

Franz listened to the woman carefully. His gaze kept trying to find a frustrated expression on the captain. As she continued on about the Tournament, a sort of dreaded look flashed across his face. It quickly disappeared and he looked ahead as if disinterested. When she stopped speaking, Franz\'s lower lip pouted out. He was silent for a few moments, determined not to answer. However, soon enough, he gave in and spoke up, "Well, I suppose I was just kidding anyways, right?" He said light-heartedly. Folding his hands behind him, he stared up at the sky. Franz didn\'t want to ruin his chances in being in the tournament. Not even to skip his studies. The young man checked his thoughts to remember not to jeopardize the tournament.

Franz sighed dramatically before mumbling, "I\'m sorry." He looked back over to the captain, "Please don\'t tell my parents." He didn\'t bother trying to make a pleading expression on his face. It wouldn\'t work on the captain. She knew better than to fall for his pouting lip and watery eyes.

"Can we practice archery or go hunting now? Really, I don\'t need to go back to my lesson." The prince changed the subject. He didn\'t want to go back to that old professor rambling on. Franz much rather go and do an activity outside with the captain instead. He only hoped that she would let him.

Half of her mouth lifted in an indulgent smile.  Of course she\'d prefer to take him out and work on archery - especially if they were to realise her plan to hunt live animals next week - but she didn\'t quite trust that his academic pursuits were done for the day.  Still, she had no qualms about asking such a question of Franz\'s tutor; the archery list was but a short ride away and she could summon an escort within ten minutes.

"I will do my best," she promised, her expression becoming serious as her torso bent forward in a humble bow of acknowledgement.  He had apologised, after all.  Plus, although the lad was her junior in every respect, he was no child and the urge to ruffle his hair - despite recent tantrums - was inappropriate.  Hence the bow.  Besides, a member of the monarchy he would remain, and his servant she therefore was.

Spinning smartly on her heel, she hastened back towards the entrance of the maze, intending to walk straight up to Franz\'s professor and firstly relieve his angst by sighting the young man, then requesting the fair monarch be given a leave of absence from the rest of the day\'s studies.  There really were more interesting things to be doing; her long-legged stride would take some matching, even though the prince was approaching her height now (she was expecting him to follow), due to her eagerness to take in some spontaneous archery practise.  She was secretly rather glad that he\'d made this insubordinate move.

"If I can convince him that you\'d benefit more from having the rest of the day in the outdoors, I think we might perfect that open stance, since you\'ve more or less mastered the square," she mused, recalling the basic and alternative archery standing positions she\'d introduced the prince to last season.

Franz noticed that little smile that the captain had given into. He smiled in return. Hopefully this meant that he would be able to go practice. Over the past few days he hadn\'t gotten enough practice in to his liking. The tutors were keeping him studying as long as they could. Part of the reason Franz disliked tutors was because they got in way of his own time of doing what he wanted to do. In the back of his thoughts, the prince knew that he had to learn the self-discipline though. He knew that when he became king he would have to do some meaningless little tasks before he could spend time doing other things.

Franz nodded his head in reply to Wilson\'s bow. He wasn\'t to bow back to her. The Monarchy wasn\'t suppose to bow unless as a greeting in a party. He brushed his clothes off, a tiny cloud of dust appearing at the knees. Franz reached up and patted his hair down a bit. The prince was unsure why he was grooming himself, but he was glad he did when the captain began walking towards where his professor was.

Franz had to skip a couple of steps and jog lightly to catch up with Wilson\'s quick pace. He glanced towards the destination they were heading. Either she was going to send Franz back to his studies or ask if Franz could be excused. Franz hoped it would be the latter. His gaze glanced over at the captain before he brought it back to look at their destination. He decided against speaking up. The decision was well thought when the captain began to speak instead.

Listening readily to the captain\'s words, Franz nodded in agreement. Once she was done talking, he replied, "Of course I would benefit more from practicing archery than listening to..." He paused, readjusting his thoughts to sound more mature. After all, he would have to impress this woman with maturity not a cute, sad face. Franz didn\'t continue and just ended his speech as if that was all he needed to say. He understood he needed more practice in archery and if anything he was willing to practice.

She chuckled warmly, appreciating what he said as only one of a like mind could. "Well, we both know there are benefits to listening to the droning - that we can\'t deny," she stated diplomatically, grinning down at him as he trotted along at her side. "But everyone has limits," she amended cheekily - against her better judgment, really... but Franz knew that she shared his sentiments. She\'d certainly alluded to it often enough, if not outright stated it when she had no option but to console the frustrated young monarch over the tedium of study versus the lack of outdoor practise.

Exiting the hedge, she paused briefly and scanned the area for the professor. On spying a few of her guards still dashing about the place with determined looks on their faces (and their gazes directed at possible hiding places so that they didn\'t notice her), she gave a loud, sharp whistle by curling her lips and tongue. Knowing the sound and reacting much like well trained dogs, the guards looked her way one by one (those within earshot of her piercing noise passing on what they saw as with the ripples in a pond). She gestured at one to come over even as she spied the professor also looking in her direction. She set off towards him determinedly, not bothering to watch that the rest of the guards all realised that they could return to their duties now - without having been told, as was to be expected - and that only the one trotted up to her. He fell silently in behind her, stepping to her side when she stopped, in front of the tutor.

"Sir, I have found your charge," Wilson told the white-haired academic brusquely. "I wonder, though, if you would allow him to come into my care for the rest of the day? It seems his mind has wandered off his studies, all for the lack of strenuous exercise. I thought I might expel some of this extra energy by way of some outdoors work this after-noon, thereby setting him in a better frame of mind for your tutelage on the morrow, what say you?" Her smile was present but certainly not fawning as she raised her eyebrows and looked down at the older gentleman. With her guard hovering keenly on one side and the young prince on the other, the trio\'s expectatons were obvious - and would, hopefully, be difficult for the professor to deny.

Franz grinned back at the captain\'s words. He was glad she wasn\'t about to lecture him on how much more important schooling was than hunting and that his thoughts should be on the books instead. Of course she wouldn\'t have said that though. Franz knew better. After all if she thought schooling was more important she would be a tutor and not a successful captain of the guard. The prince patted his hair down some in habit as they walked on.

When the captain let out a shrill whistle, Franz\'s face scrunched up in mock pain. He rubbed his ear. Glancing around, he noticed all of the guards looking their way. He looked at one slightly sweaty guard staring before he obviously went to go back to his watch post. Franz brought his gaze back over to the captain only to find her walking away. The young man quickened after her. He paused as he noticed his tutor. Slowing down, Franz casually walked up to the captain and the tutor. A sheepish look was upon his face. Despite having contempt for the lessons being taught, he had to admit respect to the tutor for having to put up with Franz\'s escapes.

The professor appeared profoundly relieved. Beads of sweat were on his creased forehead and he dabbed them away with a ruffled handkerchief (mostly likely his wife\'s). Nodding with gratitude, the tutor spoke up in a horse voice, "Thank you, captain." He replied as she first spoke up. The man was about to continue speaking but stopped as the captain spoke instead. Listening with a weary frown, the man heaved a sigh before looking at Franz. His squinty eyes peered from behind his spectacles. After obvious thought, he replied, "Well, I suppose I would have to." A very subtle tone of bitterness was underneath the man\'s words. He waved a wrinkled hand in a dismissing way, "As long as you work the prince so that he will certainly be able to concentrate tomorrow." The man\'s expression turned to Franz, "Good luck with your activities, my prince." Bowing low (and causing a crack to sound from the man\'s back), the tutor nodded humbly before turning and walking off.

Franz watched the man leave. He didn\'t mind the hidden tone of disrespect in the man\'s comments at the moment. After all, he too would be annoyed if a student left his studies to go do more important things. Tutors only had one thing in life and that was to teach. Franz wondered if the old man would just head off to plan tomorrow\'s lesson. He wouldn\'t doubt it. Looking over to the captain, the prince grinned, "See, now we can go practice, right?"

With a breathy exhalation of amusement spared for the prince, Wilson nodded briefly at him before turning away to order her man to double time it to the stables and get horses saddled.  She also named four guards - in addition to himself - that she wanted waiting with the two horses when she returned from collecting the monarch\'s equipment in the palace armoury.  He jogged off obediently and she turned her attention back to Franz.

"Shall we head to the palace, get your bow and let your father know there\'s been a slight change of plan?" she enquired, beginning to walk in the right direction.  Her smile was sly and her pace was not nearly as frantic now - although he would likely object to the king finding out that they had cancelled his studies to pursue some archery practise, Wilson was confident the ruler would understand.  He knew his son\'s desires, after all.

Franz watched as the captain ordered the guard. He didn\'t really listen to the orders and soon began to think about practicing archery. The young man really did want to learn a new technique soon but before he could do that he would have to perfect his open stance. After all, with the tournament soon he had to be the best he could be in order to make his parents proud and earn more respect from any doubtful minds. Franz\'s hands went up to pat his hair once more. It was becoming a habit of his. He believed his hair was too messy for a prince. This belief had come from overhearing a couple of noble girls talking about messy hair. He hadn\'t heard their entire conversation at the party but he was absolutely certain they had been talking about his hair.

The prince frowned in reply to the captain\'s words. He crossed his arms in a defiant way, "Well, let\'s just go get my bow. My father doesn\'t need to know about the change, I\'m sure he\'s much too busy." Franz wondered how far that weak of excuse would go with the captain. He didn\'t want his father to know about him skipping his studies. Most likely his father would tell his mother and then both of them would be disappointed. Franz hated them to act disappointed around him. It brought out all his insecurities in his thoughts.

"Actually, he does need to know about the change of plans," she insisted kindly, her expression softening as she read the concern in his eyes.  "For safety, if nothing else. But... perhaps the details of how the change came about... don\'t have to spelled out all that clearly, hmm?  Certainly the circumstances of your... unfortunate excursion into the maze don\'t have to be revealed in their entirety.  We\'ll just... let him know that you were thoroughly unable to concentrate on your studies and requested I help get your focus back, alright?"

She touched his upper arm briefly, consolingly, and began walking again.  Whether he liked it or not, the king needed to know his son and daughters\' whereabouts and activities at all times... but as she\'d promised, the details didn\'t always have to be perfectly supplied.  This was the concession she made, to assure her young charge that she really did have his best interests at heart.

Franz heaved a sigh before nodding to the captain\'s words. He flinched a little from the touch on his upper arm. The prince hadn\'t expected the action and wasn\'t use to other\'s touching him. He rubbed the place on his arm as he walked after the other. There was nothing else to do then hope that his father wouldn\'t be too disappointed. Most likely, Franz wouldn\'t get in trouble but just the other season his parents had talked to him about the importance of studies. The Queen seemed especially concerned.

Franz reminded himself he shouldn\'t look too upset about telling his parents. After all, he was still getting to go practice his archery. He was getting what he wanted, yet it didn\'t seem to make up for disappointing his mother. "Alright..." He agreed to the captain\'s words in a droning sort of way. At least the entire story of him just running out to skip the class was going to be left out of the details. Franz cheered up a bit at the thought.
