Occupational Hazard
« on: January 09, 2007, 07:33:17 AM »
Ridley led Mia by the hand down an opulent path.  He was dressed poorly today, telling her that it would be in their interest for getting her a job that he looked like he couldn\'t provide them with enough coin to survive.  Mia had stayed with him a week already and due to Ridley\'s manipulating, had lost her job at the kitchen of the Falcon\'s Mask.  He\'d spent a great deal of time with her, but now the daylight hours were taking its toll.  He needed sleep because his work was committed during night hours.  She hadn\'t yet asked what he did but he could see that she was curious.  Every time she came close to her question, he would kiss her and touch her in a way that would always lead him to bedding her.  As far as he knew, she\'d enjoyed it every time.

Now he tugged her hand to hurry her along, past the front gardens and to the grandly designed wooden doors.  He knocked firmly on them and was answered by an elderly gentleman in a few moment\'s time.

"How may I help you?" the man asked without introducing himself.  Ridley knew Lord Dagger by sight and this man wasn\'t him.

"I wish to take audience with Lord Dagger," Ridley requested, his fingers entwining with Mia\'s to keep her in check.

The elderly man, a servant most likely, looked them both over.  "For what reason may I announce your presence?" he asked.

Ridley wanted to refuse the answer just in case he was fobbed off without a meeting.  Inside the house over the servant\'s shoulder he could see a shadowy figure that was very obviously male, considering his girth.  Was it Dagger himself or a hired guard?

"Employment," he said after a pause, "for my wife."

He squeezed Mia\'s hand for her not to interject.  They would be more likely to get her work if Dagger thought her married and of a more stable background.

Mia hurried after Ridley as he lead her down the path, keeping a tight hold of his hand, not even wanting the chance of being left behind for a moment. Her bright red hair was tied back out of the way in a plait and her heart was pounding under her clean, but cheap dress made of very poor material. He’d said he would get her a job at the palace, and this wasn’t the palace, but for her it was just as terrifying. She’d heard of Lord Dagger (who hadn’t?) and he was obviously an important man, many people had great respect for him and Ridley was about to ask him if she (yes, her, a nothing like Mia) if she could work in his home.

She had stayed with him over the past week and it had just flown by. She felt bad about losing her job at the Falcon’s Mask, that had been the only thing she’d had that was really hers, that had been what had helped her be able to leave her home and now it was gone. Mia had barely even noticed it slipping away, but blamed herself for it. Thinking that it was at all Ridley’s fault never crossed her mind. How could it be his fault? It was her responsibility and she’d ruined it. But he was going to help her. He was already her whole world. Whenever she voiced the thought that she should maybe leave, or asked him anything about himself, it always lead to kissing, which she enjoyed, but then kissing always lead to him having his way with her, which she still disliked.

“We’re going to the front door?” Mia whispered with surprise as he tugged on her hand, but there wasn’t time for an answer as he was already knocking. Mia was sure this was a stupid idea, they would be turned away, or at the very least be told to go around to the servant’s entrance, but Ridley seemed confident, he knew what he was doing so she trusted him. Her dark eyes widened slightly as an older looking man opened the door, a little scared by the way Ridley said what he wanted in such a secure way.

She edged a little closer towards him, comforted a little by his fingers linked with hers and staying silent, as he’d told her to. She lowered her eyes quickly as the man looked them over, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear nervously. She didn’t want to meet his eye as Ridley blatantly lied, for fear that he would see the truth in her eyes. He’d explained it all to her, his reasons behind it and it made sense, but she still didn’t like to lie. He squeeze just reminded her even more that it was a lie, there was no way she would say anything anyway, it just scared her into being more committed not to say a word. She didn’t want to mess this up for Ridley when he had arranged everything for her.

The servant at the door looked over Ridley, then Mia, before asking them to move around to a door on the side of the house, on the west side.

"Don\'t worry should the hounds bark," they were warned, "they won\'t attack unless you enter the backlands of the estate."  The servant shut and locked the front door, while Ridley moved hurriedly to the side door, pleased to have managed to get this far in his enquiry without being turned away.  He pulled Mia along behind him, not missing the way the curtains twitched in one of the upper story window rooms, though he was careful not to be obvious about looking directly up at their viewer.

The side door was still a nicely carved wooden door, and there were no dogs to bark at them.  Ridley was concerned about that, for the word \'hounds\' implied they were hunting dogs, and he didn\'t get on well with such beasts.  Certain breeds were much better at sniffing out the predator in him than others.  He would\'ve liked to have known if the hounds were bassets for foxes (preferred) or wolfhounds for anything large (not so good).

They stood there a moment, Ridley looking at Mia and offering a small smile of reassurance before the side door opened and they were let into a narrow corridor that opened out into an adjacent and slightly wider one.  There were paintings of various tall sail ships along the second hallway, which Ridley neglected to look at, he merely noticed them.

The both of them were led into a sitting room and asked to make themselves comfortable.  The chairs were highbacked and beautifully upholstered, with stiff cushions and ornately carved arms.  They looked nice but weren\'t too comfortable at all.  Ridley sat closest to the door, not waiting for Mia to take a seat first, and noticed he was frowned at for it.  Well, never mind the servant\'s impression, he wasn\'t supposed to be a gentleman.

Instead of calling for Dagger (for due to the wait at the side door, Ridley suspected he\'d gone to his Lord straight up), the servant waited by the doorway, standing sentry.

Mia felt her heart pound faster at the mention of hounds. They sounded scary and Mia did not like the idea of being barked at every day on the way to work. But she wasn\'t going to let something let that turn her away, she didn\'t want to disappoint Ridley and she did need a new job. This wasn\'t a chance someone like her got often, if ever, she had to leap at it.

The red head obediantly followed after Ridley, not wanting him to have to pull her along, but even when she hurried he still seemed to be able to keep far enough ahead of her that she felt the tug of his hand. As they finally stopped she looked up to Ridley, giving a small smile at his reassuring look, glad that he was with her. She would never be able to do this herself.

But despite his reassuring look she still gave a small jump as the door opened, for some reason she hadn\'t been expecting it. She didn\'t look up at the painting on either side of the corridor, she was too busy worrying about what was going to happen; would they think she was good enough? Would they laugh in her face and turn her away? She lightly squeezed his hand, reassuring herself that he was there as they walked into the sitting room and she finally let herself look around. Her mouth fell open a little, it was truely beautiful in here, much nicer than anywhere she had ever been before.

She didn\'t even notice Ridley taking a seat first, not that there was anything wrong with it anyway. No one had ever waited for her to sit first, or shown her any sort of politeness of that manner. She sat down next to Ridley, not the edge of her seat, not wanting to be far from him for even a moment and not wanting to in any way dirty these beautiful chairs with any dust which might be on her skirts.

"It\'s so beautiful," Mia whispered to Ridley, glancing at the servant and when she saw his disapproving look she misunderstood and glanced down, embarrassed. Maybe they weren\'t supposed to speak until someone more important arrived, to be respectful. She wasn\'t sure, all of this was very new to her.

"The Lord has fine tastes," the servant replied, his voice a little warmer when addressing her.  Ridley couldn\'t hide his smile so he turned his head to face it towards the pretty redhead.  That was the thing about Mia that he knew would open doors to Dagger\'s home; she was beautiful, she was shy and she exuded innocence - nobody would suspect her honesty because she was pure.  Nobody\'s act was ever that good.

Footsteps could be heard moving down the stairs and then approaching.  The walk was confidant enough for Ridley to assume that it was Lord Dagger himself.  No matter how rich the rich were, servants per household was actually few.  Only royalty could support many servants, and he was fairly sure they were thrifty with their wages.  He hoped Dagger would be more generous, not that it was wages that Ridley required.  He didn\'t expect Mia to keep her job for long here anyway.

"Greetings," a voice that matched the confident steps filled the room as Lord Dagger made his entrance.  Ridley looked up to find himself meeting the gaze of a man he both resented and admired.  A watchful gaze met his own and Ridley knew instantly that Dagger was akin to his own kind - shrewd and suspicious.  Mia not get hired after all, he should\'ve sent her here alone, against his better judgement, if only to not be associated with her.

"Hello, m\'Lord.  My name\'s Ridley and this here is Mia, we\'ve come--"

"I know why you\'ve come," Dagger interrupted quietly, his gaze moving from Ridley to raise a brow at Mia\'s downturned head.  "Let me sit before we discuss business," he requested, and chose the chair opposite Mia, looking at what little he could see of her face before glancing back at Ridley once he was settled.  "Mia," he began, his stare returning to her.  "What kind of tasks are you good at?"

"She can cook, and--"  Ridley was stopped by a raised index finger.  He blinked at the long and narrow finger as it pointed straight up at the ceiling and Dagger was very pointedly looking at him in a manner which suggested that he shouldn\'t continued talking.  The servant at the door made a small cough which reminded Ridley that the man hadn\'t left them.

"Mia?" Dagger prompted, wanting the woman to speak for herself.

Mia felt her cheeks colourig as the servant acknowledged her comment, she hadn\'t meant him to hear, but it was nice to knoow he didn\'t mind her talking. She glanced down into her lap as she noticed Ridley smiling at her, wishing this was over; she didn\'t feel right here, she felt completely out of place, like she was intruding on some one else\'s life.

When she heard footsteps in the corridor her heart rate sped up, terrified that she would do something wrong, ruin this opportunity Ridley had offered her. But as long as she stayed quiet and let him do the talking it should be alright. He was so much cleverer than her, he would know what to say and do.

Suddenly there was a voice in the room and Mia almost jumped, but she just managed not to. She wondered if she should stand up, but Ridley didn\'t so she took her lead from him. The red head glanced up for a moment, a worried look in her eyes, but after taking in the impressive (and terrifying) sight of Lord Dagger she lowered her eyes again, not wanting to do something wrong by staring at him or for it to appear like she was staring. She wished she was still holding Ridley\'s hand, but now that feeling of comfort was gone.

The young girl bit her lower lip anxiously as Dagger interupted Ridley, she would never dare to do something like that, but Dagger was a powerful man and as much as she thought of Ridley she knew Dagger was higher ranking than him and could do whatever he wanted, she only hoped it wouldn\'t make Ridley angry. The feel of his gaze on her was making Mia feel quite uncomfortable and she shifted slightly in her seat, willing to let Ridley answer the question he asked, assuming it to be more to the other man rather than her anyway.

Then Dagger interupted him again. His gaze on her seemed to increase and when he repeated her name Mia raised her eyes slowly. Her large brown eyes focused on his for a moment, a few strands of red hair falling across her face. Her eyes flickered downwards again, but this time instead of settling on her lap she kept her gaze higher, looking at the buttons on his shirt, not wanting to offend him by looking right at him.

"I...I, um, can cook and I\'ve worked before, in a kitchen, so I know how to do lots of different things; little odd jobs; cleaning, preparing many different vegetables and...things like that," Mia said, speaking hesitantly and then falling silent again quickly, her voice trailing off at the end, not sure if she\'d said eough or too much. She wished Dagger would have just let Ridley speak for her, he would surely have known exactly what to say, she didn\'t want to mess this up and disappoint him.

Dagger, used to the common class being intimidated by him, wasn\'t surprised by her soft voice and inability to meet his eyes.  He was after her nature, and it seemed that she was genuine though he would not stop with only one question.  The fellow at her side who he\'d been told by Lewis, his servant, was apparently her husband, though neither of them sported rings on the appropriate fingers.  This was unusual, for even if the poor couldn\'t afford jewellery, they still made rings out of cheaper material, or bought the wooden kind that could be found at the markets, if only to represent the circle of union that bound them.  He doubted they were married, but it wasn\'t a lie he thought suspicious, for it was likely they had that kind of relationship.

Dagger was making a great deal of assumptions about Ridley, and none of them were positive.  His mind was still open to her, however, but he\'d seen enough pretty faces in his lifetime (and had them in his bed) to be swayed in his judgement by one.

"Would you be able to prepare a meal for a party of ten?" he asked her softly.  Dagger had two servants, Lewis and his wife, Irene.  They were his butler and his maid, respectively, but Irene had many domestic skills.  She not only cleaned but she could tailor his clothes and also tend to the small garden outside in Dagger\'s yard with her husband.  The hounds both responded to their orders, for they were trusted people, and had earned that trust over many years.  Irene, however, was a very ordinary cook, and so Dagger rarely entertained.  He very rarely ate at his own house, in fact, and had needed a cook for quite a long time.  There were jokes about it, and it was one of these jokes that had tipped Ridley off that he might have a foot in the door at Dagger\'s home.

His soft voice was soothing, but she couldn\'t relax, but yet. At his question she glanced towards Ridley, not wanting to lie although she thought he would want her to say yes straight off.

"I...um, I\'m not sure. I\'ve never had to, but I think I could, if I had the right equipment," she said quietly, twisting her fingers together anxiously. When she didn\'t have people yelling at her and telling her to hurry up Mia could work quickly and carefully, it was when she started getting stressed she started to make mistakes; which lead to more yelling and more stress.

To tell the truth she was a little confused by his question, why would she need to do it all herself? Surely he had lots of servants? She would just be a scullery maid, wouldn\'t she? The girl had helped in the tavern often enough to have learnt about the organisation needed to prepare meals for a lot of people. It sounded like a lot of responsibility, but as long as she had time to prepare she was fairly confident she could manage.

Dagger nodded, approving the truth of her answer while Ridley frowned, thinking that she\'d spoiled her chances of being hired.  The thief couldn\'t help himself, he had to comment.

"Mia is very modest," he began, "she doesn\'t tout her skills like she should.  I\'m sure she could prepare a dinner party for twenty people, if she had to," Ridley said.

Dagger\'s gaze flicked his way and Ridley started to feel like he shouldn\'t have interrupted again.  He didn\'t like that cold snaky stare on him, and he pressed his lips together to keep from saying more.  Dagger had an answer for him, but didn\'t tell him again to be quiet - perhaps he recognised the vow of silence for what it was.

"Not in the kitchen of this manor," he said after a moment, "for I neither have the cooking space nor a table large enough to support such numbers."

He looked back at Mia and had one last question for her.

"Lewis here will take you to the kitchen.  Would you like to prepare a meal for me?"  He smiled, then noted the clock on the wall, declaring it between breakfast and lunchtime.  "Any meal of your choosing, even if it be best for suppertime, you prepare whatever you like."

Ridley smiled confidantly at Mia.  "Go ahead, my love," he prompted, reaching across to squeeze her hand under Dagger\'s watchful eye.

Mia bit her lip anxiously as Ridley started saying how good she was, not liking the way he was saying it, as she had no idea if it was true, but she stopped herself from glancing at him, not wanting Dagger to think he was lying to him. She felt relieves as Dagger said she wouldn\'t have to do anything like that, twenty people was a lot and she didn\'t want to have to worry about things like that.

She glanced up, a little surprised at his suggestion that she cook something for him...now. That was very sudden, but she supposed he would want to make sure she could cook before hiring her.

"I, um..." she started, then glanced across at Ridley as he took her hand and gave her a reassuring squeeze and an encouraging comment. "Alright," she said, looking back towards Dagger, "I can do that...if you want me to." She twisted her fingers around around Ridley for a moment, squeezing lightly before releasing his hand and hesitantly standing up and looking towards Lewis with a small smile. After checking that Dagger didn\'t want to say anything else Mia started to walk towards Lewis, waiting for him to lead her to the kitchen.

Lewis moved down the narrow corridor, leading the way to the kitchen which was at the far end of the large house, past the stairs that led to the bedrooms on the second floor.  He stopped at a doorway and gestured for her to enter.  Upon walking in, Mia would see wooden cupboards and a stone-top kitchen, with a large sink and iron stove at the far end, with a bucket of wood already chip-cut, to make smaller fires for oven cooking.  There were a lot of base ingrediants kept in glazed pottery with lids, pictures on the jars showed them as grains, flours, seeds, salt, pepper and a batch of other herbs as well.  There were so many ingrediants and a variety of vegetables shown her by Lewis as he entered after her and opened many of the cupboard doors, and then the pantry.  The choice of meal she could make was extensive, and once they were alone in the kitchen, the butler, Lewis, had something to say.  "Don\'t get flustered, young miss.  I remember the first time I walked in this house how small I felt.  Just do one thing at a time."  He smiled at her, and it was very paternal.

Mia nervously followed Lewis down the corridor, glancing around as they walked, tryig to remember the route and the layout, not wanting to get lost. Her mouth fell open slightly as she looked around the kitchen, surprised by the amount of different things she would be able to use in her cooking and suddenly she had no idea what she was supposed to do with any of it. Wandering further into the room Mia turned around to look at everything and then watching as Lewis showed her where everything was.

His words came at just the right time and Mia gave him a small smile as she tucked a couple of stray strands of hair behind her ears, out of the way. He was right, she did feel tiny, and completey unworthy of this post.

"Thank you, Sir," she said, glancing around again. "Um, do you possibley know what Lord Dagger\'s prefered meal is? I want to impress him, but do somthing he would like," she said in a quiet voice. Her mind was racing with all the different things she could make for him, but she wanted to do something that would stand out, but that she could make well.

"I would recommend something you can present under an hour," Lewis hinted, his smile warm.  He trusted his instincts about people, a great deal more than Dagger, and he liked her very much.  He wasn\'t sure about her husband, but someone who could capture a sweet woman like Mia would surely be tender-hearted also, though likely presented a bold face.  "He can be impatient, but he\'s fair," Lewis continued, leaning against the doorway and watching, not offering to help for Dagger would frown on it.  "He\'s a good man to work for."

Ridley, meanwhile, was having a staring competiion with the Lord while they waited.

"Thank you," Mia said with a smile at him as she started moving around the kitchen, picking up things she needed and putting them out. Dagger had only said he wanted a meal for him, so she decided to pick a meal that could easily just be done for one person.

The young girl quickly cleaned and chopped up some potatoes and slipped them into a pan of boiling water then took some beef out of the larder and chopped it up into smaller peices. As she moved around things started to actually smell like food, and she didn\'t mind at all that Lewis didn\'t offer to help. She didn\'t expect him to and she was used to cooking along from when she had made meals for her uncle.

Once the beef was cooked Mia slipped it onto a warm plate to rest while she started to make a sauce with the juices left in the pan, and threw in some other vegetables and mushrooms to give a bit of variety. She had a smile on her face as she worked, enjoying being given this free rein; it wasn\'t something she often got.

The pans were quite heavy, but Mia managd to work themwell, and about half an hour after she had started Mia was putting all the different peices together on the plate, arranging it as well as she could, wanting to impress Dagger.

"Alright..." she murmured to herself, checking around the kitchen to make sure she hadn\'t forgotten anything as she put the pans into the sink. On the plate was a meal of boiled new potatoes, beef in a wine and mushroom sauce and a few other vegetables, like peas and carrots which had beeing cooked with the sauce. She took a deep breath as she looked at Lewis and gave a small nod. "I hope it\'s good enough," she said quietly, not really sure what she should do now, maybe she should have made more, but he had just wanted a meal, so that meant just one, right?

"I\'ll show you the dining area," Lewis said, who\'d been quiet all during the time he\'d watched her cook, and entered the kitchen to pick up the plate.  He also took cutlery and a napkin from a couple of drawers and then led the way to a room across the corridor, where a line of long narrow windows lined one wall, displaying the backlands of the estate.  Two very large hounds were sitting at the window on the other side, panting, their hot breath clouding the glass.  Behind them was a pretty backdrop of flowering trees and flat grasses.  As Lewis set the place at the head of the table for Dagger to sit, he made a shooing gesture to the dogs who both bounded away without a bark.  "They must\'ve heard the pots and pans clanging," he said with a smile, then he told Mia to wait while he fetched Dagger.

Both Lord Dagger and Ridley entered the room next, with Dagger taking his place at the meal and Ridley joining her side.  Lewis pulled out a couple of chairs further down the table that could sit twelve, and then stood behind the master of the house, in the corner nearest him in case he was called.

"Looks good," Dagger announced as he sat.  "Smells good too," he added once the aroma reached his nose.  Picking up his fork and knife, he tasted a large portion of each piece of food she\'d made, eating in silence and watching her as he chewed.  Ridley shifted in his seat, silently cursing rich furniture that felt as uncomfortable as it looked.  "This is a good meal," Dagger said at the end after patting his lips with his napkin.  "I will hire you under trial of a week.  You will receive seven coppers each week until your employment ends."  Ridley wasn\'t so happy about Mia getting so much money so quickly.  A normal job would\'ve earned her four.  He\'d counted on Dagger being thrifty.  "Normally my servants live in the manor with me, but since you\'re married," he drawled, not believing they were, "you will begin your day at seven in the morning and end it at five of the clock.  In between one and three in the afternoon you may choose to go home, or entertain yourself here.  You will have full responsibility of the kitchen, in all preparation of meals and also keeping it clean.  If the kitchen falls into disarray or is disorganised once you leave it, you will answer for it.  You may ask Lewis to help you at times, but that would rely on his generosity if he should deign to help, for he is a butler, not a scullery maid.  Lewis will serve the meals, you will only prepare them, and Lewis is also responsible for taste-testing before a meal, so he might find it in himself to watch you as you cook.  That is, until, we all get to know you better."

Ridley blinked.  Dagger sure wasn\'t the trusting kind, to think that Mia was a potential assassin to poison him.  Still, such a thing was very possible, for he was sure a rich man had enemies, and certainly one as powerful as the Lord who had guards that responded to his orders when he wasn\'t even in the militia.

Mia followed Lewis silently into the dining room and as Dagger and Ridley entered she lowered her eyes, not liking being here while he sampled her food. She glaanced at Ridley with a small smile as he approached her, the copied him, taking a seat at one of the ones Lewis had pulled out, sitting still while her \'husband\' fidgeted beside her.

She kept her eyes down, her hands still in her lap, but when he complimented her cooking she looked up with a small smile. It grew a little as he said how much she would be paid, she couldn\'t believe it, that was an amazing amount. She glanced at Ridley, but when she saw the annoyed look on his face her smile faltered; and Dagger\'s comment about being married sent her eyes back to her lap.

The red head looked up again, giving a small nod at his instructions. "Thank you, Sir, that\'s really very generous of you," she said quietly, "I\'ll do my best," she added, giving him another small smile. She was so happy, he was really giving her an amazing opportunity and she looked forward to the day when he felt he could trust her like he could his other servants.

"I should go clean up in the kitchen," she said, glancing at Dagger again, not sure if he wanted her to start today, but she didn\'t want to leave a mess for anyone else to clean up. She didn\'t want to just stand up and leave in case Dagger had anything else to say.

"You\'re very welcome," Dagger replied, looking directly Mia\'s way and ignoring Ridley at her side.  "I\'m sure you will," he said as she promised her best.  "You can start first thing tomorrow morning," he declared while setting down his napkin and then rising from the table, extending his hand in order to be offered hers, so that he could lift it in a gentlemanly manner and nod acknowledgement to her - a motion reserved for ladies of station rather than the serving class.  Ridley glared before he was offered a hand to be shaken, and immediately presented a disarming smile before Lewis showed them to the side door, congratulating her on her new employment, making comment that she would be shown around upon arrival and that he looked forward to working with her before the door was shut with both Ridley and Mia on its step.

"Well," Ridley exclaimed, surprised at the rush of moving them both out of the house but still extremely pleased with Mia\'s success.  He swept her up in his arms, pulling her close, and hugged her tightly before kissing her temple.  "You did a wonderful job," he commended into her hair.

As he stood up Mia hesitated for a moment before doing the same. When he held out his hand she blinked at for a moment with confusion, then she carefully slipped her own into his, her cheeks colouring as she smiled nervously. She\'d never been treated like this before and it felt very strange, but nice as well. She was still feeling stunned that all of this was happening so fast. She was going to be working in Dagger\'s kitchen; no, not just working there, running it. This had to be one of the most amazing points in her short life.

She didn\'t stop smiling as Lewis lead them to the door and let them out. Mia managed to slip in a small word of thanks before he shut the door behind them. Her dark eyes turned quickly up to Ridley\'s, sparking with delight and amazement and she let out a small laugh of joy as he hugged her tightly and she buried her face into his shoulder.

"Thank you so much," she said quietly, her arms hugging around his neck as she smiled so widely her cheeks were starting to ache. "I could never have done any of this without you."
