Tell Me Your Secrets
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:19:56 PM »
Jenna had visited the building several times, but security had never allowed her to follow through with her appointment.  At first all she\'d known of the place were rumours, and it was difficult to make an appointment when she didn\'t want to divulge what the appointment was about.  She\'d been questioned, smirked at, and then to her extreme embarrassment, escorted out.

Another flurry of research, more rumours, a very strange nightclub where she\'d also not been allowed in (even though she\'d clothed herself to look like the other nightclub goers) she\'d always be stopped at the door and told she \'wasn\'t the type\' and \'sorry we\'re full\') even though others were walking straight in.  Arguing with six foot six bouncers wasn\'t going to get her inside, she knew, but she was at a loss as to why she wasn\'t the type and others were.  Something was going on at this Risk place, that was for sure, because different bouncers on different nights also refused her.

It had taken months of visiting strange places and talking to even stranger people about where the best place to go for answers was.  Nobody who seemed to know anything were willing to share.  She\'d been rejected and refused more times in the past few months than she\'d ever been in her life, and even though it seemed like she was free-wheeling in mud and getting nowhere, she was determined not to let go.  She had a question, she wanted an answer, and she needed to talk to the right person first.

There was a word softly spoken, whispered, breathed, that she hadn\'t forgotten.  Oligarchy.  She\'d thought the term was more political than either science or magic, and when she looked it up she found a few definitions that confirmed her understanding.  It was a type of government led by a few heads.  There was a definition further down on the google search page, however, that had her staring at it while her mind turned and turned.  The Oligarchy had been taken from an Ancient Greek word, and it\'s meaning was thus:

\'An Oligarchy is a form of government in which power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society.\'

Elite segment of society.

Elite.

She pinned her hopes on that hush-hush word, spoken in an alley of a shop that had been hard to find, filled with wonders that were hard to identify, and shopped by customers that were hard to miss.  Oligarchy.  It had to mean something.

After several attempts at getting nowhere, and facing yet another guard that was prepared to escort her across the marble foyer and out the door, she shoved against him and earned herself a raised eyebrow for her trouble.  He waited though, for her to have her say, and for that she was grateful.  Instead of saying anything however, she showed him why she needed the appointment.  He was expressionless, and she wondered if maybe she was imagining everything and he hadn\'t seen what she\'d just seen, before he told her in his deep and raspy voice that there was an open slot in a couple of hours and would she like to wait?  She hugged him, which earned her a grumble and a moving away with his hands on her shoulders, but despite this she couldn\'t wipe the smile off her face.

It was gone now though, for after two hours in a waiting room that smelled a little funny and sitting in a sofa that was somehow too soft and wouldn\'t let her shift position easily, she was getting anxious.  She saw a few odd things also, which told her she was in the right place, but it was still a shock to her to see it.  Her reactions to everyone else mostly went unnoticed, but a pale red-headed gentleman frowned at her a lot before he went into his appointment behind the wooden double doors ahead of her.  What his problem was she couldn\'t know, but for some reason she got the feeling that he didn\'t seem to approve of her.

She\'d read the whiteboard beside the door announcing who was presiding within.  Mr Kerr Galvin.  The name was traditionally Irish, though he was probably many generations American.  Her gaze swept over the room again and again, until finally, her name was called.  Standing and straightening her jacket - a grey serious pinstriped number that looked smart with her matching skirt, her pink shirt beneath revealed by its collar and few top buttons only - she entered through the left hand door, ignoring the one on the right, and let it close pneumatically behind her.

Approaching the horseshoe shaped table, where three large chairs were at the head - and a large throne-like one standing empty in the centre - her gaze was pulled to the well dressed pale man seated to one side of the very large chair.  There were others seated at the wings of the horseshoe table, but they were focussed mostly on their papers.  She walked to the centre of the table before stopping, perhaps five metres from the man gazing rather intensely at her, and wondered if this was the Mr Kerr Galvin whose name was written neatly on the whiteboard outside.

She cleared her throat, and instead of waiting to be addressed, she bid him good evening, nodding a little and turning to look at those on her left and right, softly saying good evening to them as well, feeling like her voice was too loud in the very echoey chambers.  Turning back to the man before her, she waited, a little wide-eyed, for him to speak.

The file that sat before Kerr on the desk was surprisingly full, considering the nature of the visit the woman before him was undertaking.  People - many people - had been aware of her for some time, the notations of her pestering the Risk bouncers as well as the Chambers\' bouncers were extensive and increasing in frequency up until this night, when she\'d (apparently) had her breakthrough.

She was a professional and she conducted herself accordingly - he would\'ve picked the trait in her even if he hadn\'t conveniently had her job description, home address and immediate family details written down before him.  He looked her over as she stood there, exuding confidence to mortal eyes but unsettled and anxious to his.  He smiled lightly to reassure her, shifting in his seat so that his black suit jacket could come out from beneath him (he\'d sat a little carelessly a few moments ago when returning to his chair).

"Good evening.  I\'m Oligarch Kerr Galvin," he bade in a fairly warm tone (she had proven herself a pest, so he didn\'t want to seem overtly friendly, only to have to issue her a punishment of some sort in ten minutes\' time).  "Please state your name and outline your business here, for the record," he instructed in his soft Irish brogue, sparing a pointed glance for the stenographer seated off to his right.  The little man positioned behind the stick-like machine had legs too short to reach the floor, his small, pudgy fingers flying over the keys as Kerr spoke, stopping when there was silence.  The man didn\'t look up.

Anticipating that his guest would have fallen for the bait of looking to her left, the vampire watched the young woman before him, believing he wouldn\'t be observed for a moment or two.  She had extraordinary eyes and a beautiful mouth but what struck him the most about her was her scent.  It reminded him vaguely of the smell of the hot sun, beating down on mortal skin, crisping it.

He\'d known a few people that smelled like that - demons - but not quite as subtly as she.  On her, it was an alluring smell, reminding him of long-lost mortality and lazy days making love in remote Irish paddocks beneath an adoring sun that raised a patina of sweat on nubile, writhing bodies - quite an inappropriate thought towards a woman he\'d just met, and tinged with far too much melancholy to be professional in return, but there all the same.

Forcefully, he cleared his mind of all but listening to her state her case, not wanting to become distracted.

She listened to him speak, hearing the lilt in his words and identifed his accent correctly.  Irish name, Irish accent, he was someone in power that either hadn\'t been in the States long or often visited his country of birth (she guessed).  After asking her to speak, but looking at the stenographer, she took a moment to follow his gaze, doing what he expected of her without realising.  The little man caught her attention for a short moment but she turned back to face Kerr soon enough, in order to respond appropriately.  At least in this place, now that she\'d got here, it was very businesslike and nothing like the strange places she\'d been to in order to lead her here.

"My name is Jenna Hall.  I have questions to ask of you, which I am positive the Oligarchy can answer."  She paused for a moment, giving him time to respond, but judging by his silence she surmised he expected her to continue with her questions.  "I should give you a little background about myself, so you understand why I\'m here."  She waited again, glancing from Kerr\'s face to the file before him, and wondered if that large amount of paperwork had anything to do with her.  "I\'m a curator at the museum.  It\'s a quiet job but it suits me well.  I haven\'t seen too many unusual things in my lifetime, but some people have fantastic stories they\'ve relegated to me - fantastic stories," she said again, her tone implying that she was using the word in its truest sense, that the stories were based in fantasy rather than being wonderful, "and I haven\'t dismissed them, though most would challenge their credibility.  Until now, I\'ve seen nothing unnatural in my life, nothing dubious, nothing strange or exceptional, or questionable."  She paused again, to give him something to say, though there really wasn\'t much to say to all of that, so she pressed on.

"Several weeks ago, possibly two months, I\'ve lost my grasp of time lately," she said hurriedly, "I went to snuff out a candle and I did it with my fingers.  I usually use a little metal cover for such a purpose, but I couldn\'t immediately find it.  I was tired and wanted to go to bed, and it\'s unwise to leave a candle burning unattended.  When I pressed my fingers to the wick and pulled my hand away, the flame came with it - like I\'d picked it up somehow."  Her expression mirrored the surprised the one she\'d had on the night, and her hand had reached out to gesture the act while she\'d described it.  "It stayed with me, Mr Galvin, and it didn\'t burn me.  I was holding fire in my fingers.  I snuffed it out by making a fist," she repeated this action and then opened her hand, dropping her gaze from Kerr to look down at her palm, looking back at him when she continued speaking, "but the next night I experimented further.  I seem to be able to both hold and control flames.  I know it\'s not medical, or scientific, so I didn\'t bother with the hospital.  I didn\'t want to share this with people who would be afraid of me, so I sought out those who would have an answer for me.  In the waiting room I saw a man with a long striped tail.  A tail, Mr Galvin," she pointed behind her, at the doors, towards the room in question.  "You likely know more about these powers I have than I do.  I ask of you, to please tell me what\'s going on?"

Now she waited in complete silence for him to speak, for she believed he likely would have a lot to tell her.

To say that he was surprised by her tale would be an understatement, and his eyes widened and felt like they got gradually wider as she explained her experimenting with fire.  She seemed very... reasonable about it all.  Stable.  In her place, he imagined he would have gone straight for hysterical and spiralled downward from there; perhaps she had, and was now on the upward crawl to understanding - if so, he was grateful for her strength.  He respected her journey overall, really; coming to realise you were supernatural in complete ignorance couldn\'t be easy to cope with.

Given the delicacy of the information he was challenged with imparting to her - and he didn\'t even second guess himself with regard to her knowing what she was, for she seemed strong and he felt she was owed enlightenment - and the lateness of the hour, he made an unusual decision then.

Frowning slightly, Kerr leaned forward so that his forearms were resting against the edge of the table, his fingers linked together as he looked at his guest.  He should have known how forthright she\'d be when she marched almost up to the table, unfazed by the imposing arrangement of furniture in the room (which was designed specifically to do that).

"Miss Hall... you\'re right," he told her equably, "I do know more about your abilities than you do - though let me add that I am, by no means, an expert in your case.  I would, however, like to invite you to my office to talk about what I do know.  The reason I offer my private chambers is, for a start, I believe you\'ll be shocked and I want you sitting down.  Secondly, this room is not best suited to the conversation we need to have - would you be willing to accompany me?" he enquired politely, the height of gentlemanly manners as he waited for her to choose.

Going to a private office with a strange man in an even stranger and secretive location where nobody knew where she was, was perhaps not the most wise of decisions, but she didn\'t hesitate.  His acknowledgement of her powers without question, or even a request for a demonstration (which she\'d been forced to give the guard in order to get here in the first place), had her expression changing to something victorious.  A winning light entered her light as well as a satisfied smile stretching her lips.

"Thank you, Mr Galvin, I accept," she said, then waited for him to take the lead so that she could follow.  The notion that she was taking a risk and choosing an unsafe path did occur to her, but she dismissed it.  She\'d just told the man she could do unnatural things with fire, and because of this talent - even as minimally as she could control it - she felt a lot safer than she would\'ve been normally.

The formal way she accepted - and the brave, considering she was walking into the unknown - summoned a ghostly smile and he set about tidying things up, having brief conversations with everyone who was in the room, openly telling the stenographer that the conversation they would have didn\'t need recording and thanked him for his efforts throughout the evening.

There was a sense of business-like comraderie amongst everyone, from the large men guarding the door to those scuttling in to take paperwork away - jokes were made, laughter shared and a generally buoyant feeling of a night well-finished permeated the air.  Kerr walked away from the door at the back of the room that everyone else was heading for, however, and gestured with a grand arm for Jenna to walk with him towards the door she\'d entered through.

He didn\'t say anything as he led her - via a polite press against the elbow closest to him - towards the bank of lifts nearby, hitting the \'up\' arrow button and feeling pleased when the door slid open immediately.  Kerr gestured politely for Jenna to precede him into the small room, and stood at her right when he entered, selecting a floor number third from the top.  As the doors slid closed, he looked at his companion with mild interest.

"Could I have anything brought up for you while we talk?  Some tea or coffee?  Something cold or something to eat?"

Now that she was moving towards her answers, a sense of calm washed over her and the anxiety Kerr spotted earlier on left her.  She was relaxed but eager for the news he had to share with her.

"A coffee would be lovely, thank you," she accepted, smiling up at him and thinking idly about his pale complexion - odd for a darkly coloured Irishman.  She hadn\'t thought anything of it when the red headed frowning man caught her attention, for red heads were usually paler than most, but there had been quite a few pale visitors into the chambers today, she realised afterward.

She suppressed an urge to ask questions as the elevator glided to Kerr\'s floor, instinctively following her socially correct upbringing, though her thoughts listed off a number of points of things she\'d observed in the waiting room.  Kerr wouldn\'t have caught any of them unless he was actively reading her mind, for unlike his progeny, she wasn\'t a broadcaster in the slightest.

He smiled back at her, catching the way her gaze sheered off his eyes and along his skin as she looked back at the lift doors opening and only realising at that moment that she would likely ask about him and what he was, if she didn\'t take her own news too poorly.  Oh boy.

The walk to his office wasn\'t quick, for his suite was at the far end of the hall, in an opulent, previously-hotel room set far back from the bank of elevators (as anyone who\'d once paid a small fortune to reside in the hotel would have expected).  He produced a swipe card that emitted a beep when he slid it through the slot, leaning forward to open the door but pushing it inward and indicating with a smile and a tip of his head that Jenna should walk in first.  The luxurious beige-coloured settee in the expansive greeting room would make it obvious where he intended them to talk but he closed the door and strode to it in order to put her at ease.

"Please, sit," he invited, gesturing at the three-seater as he sank into one of the perpendicular armchairs and reached for the phone sitting on the end table between the two.  He didn\'t dial a number but spoke into the handset after a delay of perhaps five seconds, ordering a pot of coffee with all the extras - meaning cream, milk, sugar, biscuits and a muffin - before hanging up.  Moving slightly in his chair, he then addressed his guest.  "I\'d like you to call me Kerr," he told her without preamble, "and would you mind terribly if I removed my jacket, Jenna - oh, may I call you Jenna?" he interrupted himself, somewhat ashamed to have followed etiquette on one hand and breached it with the other.

"Thank you," she said softly as she was invited to walk into his office first.  Kerr Galvin was indeed a gentleman, which meant he\'d been raised up on traditional values, much like she had.  Few people nowadays, even businessmen, treated others as courteously as they deserved, and she found, with a few simple words and actions, that she already liked the Oligarch.

He invited her to sit so she sat where he gestured, on the furthest seat of the sofa, closest to the armchair where he was making moves to sit.  She watched him lift the phone to his ear with a polite smile, listening to his request and thinking it likely only meant milk and sugar.

He invited her to use his first name and asked permission to lose his jacket in the same breath (though something nagged her about that), when she nodded her answer.  His use of her first name didn\'t bother her, not when she\'d been about to return the invitation.

"You may," she said formally, and realised the answer could be to both requests.  "I think I shall also remove my own."  She moved forward on the cushion, perching herself on the edge in order to unbutton and remove the tailored jacket before folding it in half and then draping it over the back of the sofa close to her.  She took the time to straighten her pink shirt and then slipped back into a more comfortable position on the seat, crossing her bare legs.

Unable to wait further, she affronted Kerr with her previous question, though rephrased.

"Okay.  I\'m sitting down now, Kerr.  What\'s happening to me?"

The smile was gone.  She was looking at him avidly, all business.

He couldn\'t help but smile, biting back the chuckle that wanted to come out, lest she think him rude.  Still, he didn\'t answer her immediately, for he took his time taking off his black jacket, standing to attach it to a coat hanger that was draped nonchalantly on a coat rack near the door.  He removed his tie while he was there, looping it around the hanger\'s neck before he hung it up and walked back to his seat, rolling the sleeves of his pale blue shirt up and undoing the top two buttons.

"It\'s... not really happening to you," he said thoughtfully, wincing at the end of his sentence as if he found the entire phrase distasteful.  He then looked steadily at her, focussing immediately on her lovely eyes.  "It\'s something that\'s part of you.  Part of your heritage, anyway.  Obviously, you\'re unaware of it, but somewhere back in your past, you must have had a relative who... had the same talents, shall we say?" he mused, tasting the words.

He watched her for silent confirmation, not seeing anything, so prompting a little further.  "Have you ever heard stories about one of your ancestors being a little bit peculiar, or gifted in any way with fire?"  He expected her to refuse and prayed she wouldn\'t grow impatient with him, but he was doing his best to delay everything until the coffee had arrived.  He didn\'t want to start bandying the word \'demon\' about until there was a sugar hit nearby - the vampire in him knew very well that mortals suffering a shock to the system would be aided by such a thing, and he didn\'t anticipate one with mixed fire demon blood would be too far off.

Thankfully, just after he\'d finished phrasing the same question another way, a knock came at the door before it opened - he did it telekinetically, then chastised himself for it, hoping the instinctive reaction was masked by the fact that the server entering the room was somewhat juggling the tray, like they\'d had to drop a keycard back in their white, liveried pocket.  The fact that that same employee had elongated pixie ears and wild, emerald green hair hopefully distracted Jenna\'s attention somewhat as well.

Once the large tray holding the elegant silver coffee pot, matching pots and bowls and sweet treats had been put on the coffee table before Jenna, the faerie left with a jaunty smile and nod, closing the door behind himself.  Kerr was, by now, slightly slouched in his chair, watching his guest, left elbow up on the arm and his fingers pressed to his temple.  Even if she didn\'t have a comment about the faerie, he was still curious as to whether or not there\'d been rumours of a particularly weird family member back in her tree somewhere (likely a long way back, if she knew nothing about it).

He was hinting at her bloodline, and she\'d thought of the possibility as well, for her parents were the first people she\'d spoken to - though she\'d done it in a discrete manner, coded well enough so that her questions didn\'t make any sense to her father, and had only concerned her mother enough that she wasn\'t getting enough rest.  She wasn\'t about to tell them she could control fire, not when she was positive they would\'ve educated her about such a thing if they\'d known, or had the ability themselves.

A peculiar ancestor got her thinking, for there\'d been a few eccentric distant relatives in her past; but having a fetish for bathing in maple syrup or believing that pixies lived in the garden was hardly anything to do with her and her existing talent.

The knock distracted her from her thoughts and she turned to watch the strangest waiter she\'d ever seen enter the room and deliver their coffee tray.  Trying her best not to stare but finding her gaze returning to his ears in spite of her efforts, she was relieved that he didn\'t remain in order to pour them their coffees and bid him a polite thanks before he left the room.  After staring at the coffee pot and the other items upon the tray for a moment, she turned back to look at Kerr.

"There was one unusual occurence," she said, not commenting on the waiter and behaving as though the most normal thing had happened - and it had, really, a fellow had come in to serve coffee, and that was all - before she struck a thoughtful pose, twisting her lips slightly before she continued with her comment, "but it has to do with water, not fire.  My great grandmother was found drowned, in the middle of an alleyway between two streets, without a pool nearby and not even wet, according to the constabulary\'s reports."  She frowned at Kerr.  "Do you think she had a talent with water and it backfired on her?"

This brought another, horrifying thought to her quite suddenly, that she could burn herself alive by accident.  She went almost as pale as Kerr beside her, and mused on it.

"Uh, no," Kerr reassured her, and slid forward in his seat to pour her coffee into the mug, enjoying the heady aroma of it, carried to him on burgeoning, acrobatic steam.

A great grandmother drowned in an alley would seem odd and it was exactly what he\'d been hoping for.  Impressed with her intellect, instead of feeding her an answer directly, he decided to offer her a morsel that would (he predicted) lead to her understanding for herself.

"Water and fire are opposing elements... " he said leadingly, glancing up at her as he replaced the pot and lifted the shiny silver lid on the sugar bowl.  "Sugar?" he added simply.  Perhaps it was wrong of him to allow her to draw conclusions for herself but she intrigued him; her mind was sharp and he was enjoying conversing with her - why rush it?

He denied her thought process, which was good because she was trekking down a terrible path with her imagination, and she stared at him blankly for a moment while she had to backtrack.

Opposing elements, he said, and she gave him a soft \'yes, please\' to the question about sugar while her mind turned over what he was hinting at.  She knew what he was doing, but she wasn\'t impatient or frustrated with him about why, for she was sure she would get her answers soon enough.  She supposed he must\'ve considered a connection she made herself would make the most sense to her.  It was typical of her tutors, and she was used to being treated in such a way, after many years of being raised that way.

"I\'m an... elementalist?  Like a... wizard?" she hazarded, watching him put sugar in her coffee and then looking at him directly to see if she was right.

His head tilted from side to side in obvious consideration of the guess and he spoke while he lifted the milk jug with a questioning look, responding to whatever cue she gave him with regard to whether she wanted milk or not.

"In a sense... but it travels in your bloodline, it\'s not a studied art form.  And you only have control over fire.  Anyone with control over water... would be your enemy," he said, passing her the coffee he\'d made to her tastes, before sliding back into his chair again.  His long legs were splayed haphazardly before him, his elbows resting on the arms of his chair and fingers linked before his stomach as he looked steadily at her.

"I would say that your grandmother was attacked by someone of an opposing ability - it\'s very likely that she is the one you\'ve inherited your talent from, if that\'s the only unusual story you know of.  It could have been one of her parents, of course," he conceded with a shrug, "but it seems that the knowledge of your bloodline died out with her?"  He raised his eyebrows, questioning whether that would be an accurate summation or not.

It was entirely possible that her grandparents and even her parents were keeping secrets from her, of course, which was why he had to ask if she thought the knowledge dying theory an accurate one.  If her parents were secretive people, it might be that only she was ignorant to her bloodline.

She nodded for the milk, and then picked up the coffee, sipping it and warming her hands with the mug, even though it was warm in Kerr\'s office.  She didn\'t correct him when he said grandmother instead of great grandmother, it wasn\'t important, for the woman had died before Jenna was born and she only had the most intellectual understanding of her heritage.  Her great grandfather\'s family tree was the one mostly traced, and she realised now that her great grandmother\'s parentage had drawn a blank.  If ever there was a mystery in her family tree, then that was it.

"It seems so," she agreed, finally voicing her thoughts now that they\'d caught up to the present and Kerr\'s guess.  Her parents surely didn\'t know, and she thought it unlikely her grandparents would keep it a secret.  The grandmother who would\'ve known the secret, being the daughter of the potentially fire-controlling woman that died by drowning, had unfortunately died during Jenna\'s nineteenth year, and so any secrets would\'ve died with her.  Unless her husband knew, and Jenna doubted he did, the secret certainly had died.

"What kind of creature was the waiter?  Is there a name for what he is?" she asked suddenly, getting an idea on a different train of thought.
