Treading Water
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:26:55 PM »
Sometime between the times he had fallen asleep and when he had become aware of himself in his own dream, their bodies had become ensnared. He could feel her awake between his arms, her eyes puncturing his sternum with a distant gaze that he had come to know too well. Her hair had settled chaotically between the both of them; he could feel it on the crook of his good arm even under the impression of sleep. Her arctic blackness pulsed through him like the heartbeat he didn’t have – and he let it without exchanging any blows.  Instead he lay there enclosed in dreams as she lay awake without him. It was only when his mind caught an image of her being smothered by a habitual murky creature, spiny and swirling, dense and spitefully intended did his eyes flicker close and then open again slowly, the idea of Judas smothering the Queen fading from view as he found himself pressed against her forehead.

Uncomfortably comfortably close.

The linen smelled freshly of their sex from the previous night, his fingers coated in a thin layer of her crest which he could still feel on his nails and between his tattooed skin. He felt odd being awake next to her, not saying anything to her – a feeling much like a sort of comfort to have her so close. The gaping hole in his chest hadn’t hurt since after their bodies had parted somewhere near dawn, since he had drifted to sleep in a coma of her roiling sinister energy. That same crater ripped open anew as he woke and came to recognize the situation of his being, his naked body embracing hers, a thick blanket of their sex shielding them from the night. Nikolai made no motion to leave her. This crater was different than the one he had faced on his own. It felt completely different yet somehow related to the crater he experienced when he was away from Sonya. The one he felt as she pressed her petite frame to him was somewhat less painful, yet more intense, suffocating and cruel. It felt less like a hole and more related to a ball of tightness in his chest, a fire that smoldered hotly instead of actually burning. And instead of being soothed by her icy glare into his chest, the burning was stoked by it.

The younger vampire shifted slightly, needlessly announcing his wakeful state. He looked down at the woman whose neck lay comfortably between his tattooed arms. Her eyes lifted and her expression seemed to shift as well as they held each other’s stare. The smoldering fire renewed and he exhaled wearily.

He had taken her – carried her(he almost cringed at the thought) – into her own house and brought her to the room that they had unknowingly dubbed “his” room, the same room which she had thrown him out of upon their first encounter a couple of years before. He had placed her on the bed and likewise placed himself on top of her. And she let him, her lips and hands moving over her like the always had, rhythmically and with purpose, but somehow it was different. They’re bodies had moved together like always, her lips pulling something from him he couldn’t place, something he wasn’t accustomed to giving, and yet he gave it to her quite willingly.

Her hands moved over him desperately, cleaving at his shirt in a race for skin. Something about their game had changed; not once did he think of fucking her. As Nikolai looked at the woman he could remember fucking her.

Only he wasn’t fucking her.

The phrase popped up in his mind, attaching itself to the memory, a phrase that made him cringe, made him angry and made him search for another. He wanted to call it fucking her, but there was no blood. There was no lust, no need of fulfillment, no groans aimed towards satisfaction, no frustration. There was nothing of the sort. He didn’t have a name for it.

And when they had finished after hours of – whatever it was – they found each other again, never really parting at all. Moments of silence passed and they breathed harshly, in rhythm again. He didn’t have anything to say to her, but pressed his lips against hers passionately and wrapped himself more tightly around her. He made her no promises, no guarantees of fidelity or love, no suggestions of always being there. He simply held onto her, his nails dug into her flesh healed around his finger tips.

He had found true words somewhere just before their bodies connected and picked them up out of the corners of his mind, pieces of ideas he never allowed himself to assemble. And the words came too easily, without grace or intelligence, tripping over each other before he could hold them back from her. Had he been human, he would have flushed red with embarrassment. The idea was there, the want to move his lips and tell her on a constant basis, an idea that he was better -- that she was better – than some human fuck. As he looked into her eyes, he could recall the exact wording, the look of submission she had given him, the want to make that look linger and to show her the truth of his words – to prove that they were more than just words of the moment. The recollection made him cringe and made a sickened Judas so recently awoken snarl savagely.

“Good morning,” he said with a touch of sarcasm, reluctantly shifting his arm on her neck until it was back at her shoulders. A smirk flitted across his expression, still lined with a touch of that honesty and openness from the night before.

She had awoken hours before he had.  It was like she hadn\'t really slept at all.  After they - what exactly did they do? - had sex, well into the dawn and parted, she watched him fall asleep.  She studied his eyes as they remained open, lids drooping slightly over the iris but never overtaking the pupil.  They moved back and fourth as he muttered and hissed at different intervals through the day, gripping the sheets or her back in his dreams.  It was something that she was used to by now, something that she never asked him of - though she had never seen anyone sleep with their eyes even slightly open - and he never mentioned it (if he even was aware of it).  She always watched him, taking time before falling asleep herself.  This was what she had always done after their bodies had parted, though it wasn\'t until fairly recently that she had actually stayed in bed with him after he fell asleep - instead of retiring to her own room.  After all, why should she feel threatened by falling asleep in his arms after a satisfying evening of fucking?  Yet this morning, it wasn\'t until about an hour after he had drifted to sleep that the Queen finally followed, though very lightly and without dreams.

There was regret somewhere within her, as though she had lost a battle with him and had let her guard down.  It seemed to go against a part of her to fight it, and there was so much giving in on her part that night that she preferred not to think about it.  She had reasoned that lowering her defenses would sedate the burning that plagued her chest.  It had done exactly the opposite, though it temporarily relieved the pressure that had been accumulating throughout the night.  She hated how easy it was, how she trembled and anchored her nails pathetically into him like a fledgling aching for comfort from death or for quench of the Thirst. Even as he touched her, coaxing the climax from her sex, she hissed back the release with her teeth clenched, holding the hot waves of release back in her chest.  She refused to whimper and beg like a whore; she would not give herself to him. No matter how the burning inside flared when their eyes touched.

After a light day\'s sleep the feeling had not changed, and she awoke to him speaking her name in his slumber.  Still, this wasn\'t anything new, it wasn\'t anything she was unaccustomed to as he said her name quite often when they fucked.  She was silent, expression unwillingly soft, eyes scanning his face with moderate interest.  Even though she had the ability to, she never invaded his mind out of curiosity - to see what he was dreaming of.  It was like a guessing game to piece together the words he muttered and trying to form some sort of coherent scenario that he could possibly be seeing inside his head.  This game drove all thoughts of last night from her head, if only temporarily.  And after hours of watching him, she found herself wishing he were awake.

The burning that she had managed to ignore while he was sleeping renewed itself when he closed and opened his eyes again.  She held her gaze, watching his eyes as though she could see the thoughts in his head.  She scrambled for what little sarcasm was in his voice, for the sake of returning a state of equilibrium.  She returned the smirk, but it was awkward and she averted her eyes as she moved slightly away from him and shifted, trying to pass it off as though she were uncomfortable sitting still any longer.

"Mmm," she merely replied, unwilling to make even a sarcastic remark on the state of the evening.

His lips landed on her forehead again and he felt strange for allowing himself to do so. His hand crept slowly across her back without purpose. Her skin was smooth and cold, flawless as always

Still he had few words for her. That uncomfortable sense of strangeness like before washed through him and caused him to lay there tangled in her in silence. Except for the burning in the barren cavity of his chest and the thick black blanket of Sonya\'s depth draped over him, he felt very little at that exact moment. There was a drifting feeling, like being carried on an ocean tide.

Sonya was the ocean.

Judas moved his limbs, pushing the vampire farther from the queen. The prick sat up with reluctance and effort, destroying the uncomfortable comfort he had maintained for long hours of the day and night. The ashes tumbled and the smouldering hole burned bright orange. He swallowed the lump in his throat. His lips parted as if to speak but the heat in his chest climbed his throat and choked him up. Judas growled loudly.

His hand groped at the bedside table groggily, pulling the pack of cigarettes open and popping on between his lips. The younger lit the stick as his eyes found Sonya again.

"When did you feed last?" His voice was low and steady, deeper than he remembered and lacking all expression. It was simply a question spoken as if there were some message trying to be transmitted across the two feet that separated them on the bed.

She watched the muscles in his back pull and stretch as he moved away from her.  Something in her chest followed him, pulling at her throat, but she remained motionless on the bed.  She envied his composure, his nonchalance, they way he acted like nothing different had happened.  Sonya said nothing to him, her mouth frozen in an expression that read of some kind of struggle.  Her eyes moved across his back and arms, following the ink until her gaze wandered to his fingertips.  The snap of the lighter and rich smoke of tobacco brought her back.  Their eyes met and she scrambled to change the look on her face.

"I don\'t remember."  She replied after a moment\'s hesitation, attempting to sound more dismissive than thoughtful.  It was the truth, she didn\'t remember the exact day that she had last fed.  She knew it was long enough to grow accustomed to the pulling at her jaw and enough to make her numb to it.  That was how she dealt with the burning - by forcing her mind to think of nothing but ice.  Her eyes glanced away from his, flickering - safely - across the ink on his skin again.  Anything to keep her mind away from things that made her think, that made her soften.

She didn\'t, though.  That wasn\'t what she did.

The Queen held her hand out, indicating the desire for a cigarette as well.  She half expected him to ignore her, or to say something sarcastic.  She almost relied on it as a signal that everything was back to-

to what, exactly?

-back to normal.

He lit the first cigarette and saw her hand, a common gesture of hers to ask him for a cigarette. Without coming up with some snappy remark, he handed her the first lit cigarette, and proceeded to light another one for himself.

"I have to feed either tonight or tomorrow," the prick said matter-of-factly, turning his position in the bed so that he was facing her. They were both completely naked and her body was half wrapped in a the bedsheet, teasing him though that was not the intention. He liked it nonetheless and found it easy to put his hand on her lower thigh as he looked at her.

He had no intention of leaving her just yet. There was a sense of their averageness returning -- as long as their eyes would cooperate and not give away any true thought about what had happened the night previous. The brick sitting on his stomach remained tentatively balanced as he spoke off-handedly to her about simple things that he needed to do.

"You should probably come with me." Accidently, his eyes caught her gaze wandering his tattooed skin and then caught his gaze. The brick plummetted and the fire seared painfully. Judas scratched at the inner walls of his mind, causing Nikolai\'s eyes to roll back in his head briefly. When his vision focused, he noticed Sonya\'s gaze still on him, reading him. The younger instantly looked away and tried to forget that the moment happened.

She knew far too much about him. Never before -- not with Vincent, not with the Disciples, not even with Pierre -- had he allowed anyone to know so much about him. He preferred to be an enigma, a puzzle to everyone. Nikolai never explained his motivations, his actions. He did what he pleased when he pleased. There was no one to tell him what or how to do anything. Except Judas.

And yet this bitch had already gotten a glimpse of Judas. While she never questioned Nikolai about his silent partner, knowing this didn\'t ease any of the tension between the two companions. In fact, Judas growled everytime Sonya looked too closely at him now, everytime she toppled that brick, or spurned the fire in him.

It was part of the reason he didn\'t want to be around her anymore -- her ability to disrupt the equalibrium with a look. One glance spurned the fire in his chest and made Judas punish him for being so easily effected by the woman who meant nothing to the younger vampire. It was part of the reason that he had left her so often -- in the hopes that the burning would go away and that Judas would get off his case.

How wrong he was. Instead of dissapating, the fire was usually spurned as much as because of her presence as by her absence. In truth, he couldn\'t win. Nikolai left to ease the momentary pressure and for no other reason. But as long as the pressure in his body was eased by Sonya\'s presense he would stay. It was simply how he operated.

She studied his face as he spoke, like she always had in the past.  She noticed the flicker in his features and understood the cause.  And like always, she said nothing of what they both knew lurked beneath his surface.  It wasn\'t any of her business.  It wasn\'t as though she cared enough to wonder exactly how it affected his mental stability - or his emotional well being for that matter.  Over the course of the time they had spent with one another, she had become somewhat accustomed to the appearance of this \'other\' and knew enough what seemed to provoke it.  She knew where not to touch, specifically if he hadn\'t fed.  But this time there was no provocation, at least not that she could see, and this was intriguing to her on some level.  Not that she would ever claim to know exactly how the other\'s mind operated.  She wasn\'t so delusional as to believe herself that intimate with him.

She didn\'t want to be, either.

Instead of responding, she pulled smoke into her lungs.  The dull burning in the back of her throat rekindled the want for blood.  Her face betrayed nothing of the sort and she stared absently at the glowing tip of the tobacco and the smoke rising to the ceiling.

"Should I." the ancient stated coolly, her expression suddenly vacant as her eyes moved to his hand on her thigh.  If she didn\'t think so much, it almost felt as though nothing had happened.  The realization deeply pleased her.  Of course she still had control, and she took comfort in that if nothing else. Distance.  Keep your distance.

Ice.  Frozen ice.

"Yeah, actually," he said, shifting his position next to her so that he was reclined next to the Queen yet again, the cigarette burning in his outside hand. "You\'re freezing and you get way too fucking creepy when you haven\'t fed." There was a typical hint of a joke behind his words, but his tone was steady and serious, as if he had just pointed out a well-known fact to her.

The spiney black creature in his mind swirled the instant his skin touched hers as he adjusted himself on the bed. He forced himself to pull away slightly, preventing himself from maintaining the full contact that he wanted with her. Had he wanted to, Nikolai would have pulled the woman into him on the bed, having her head resting on his chest, to feel her fingers tracing the lines of his tattooes on his chest and arms.

If he had wanted to.

Instead the younger maintained an almost awkward distance to quiet the scratching in his ear. He lay facing her, half beneath the sheet that she was wrapping in. The two were as close as they could be without their skin touching. Nikolai contented himself with that, the pain lingering in him.

The younger vampire let his eyes wander over her body. Her legs were ivory, bent slightly on the sheets as she always did when she slept. The shadowy separation of her outter lips and the tips of her sculpted hair flirted from beneath the sheet, between her thighs, dry now that some hours had passed since their... something. The thin cotton stretched up and over her hip, sloping back down towards the mattress as it mirrored her waist and ribcage. Her breasts were free, leaning towards the bed with her, her dark nipples hardened so close to his chest.  The alabaster skin continued smoothly up her arms and neck, rippled with her muscles beneath the surface that could have easily killed him in one powerful motion.

But when his eyes met hers, he didn\'t look away, holding her gaze as long as she gave it to him to hold. On most nights he was excellent at reading her and figuring her out, but for whatever reason he could understand nothing of what she showed him, if she were showing him anything at all with her gaze.

"What?" Nikolai asked quietly and quite stupidly, half-expecting her to answer.

Sonya knew exactly how she behaved without blood.  \'Creepy\' wasn\'t a word she would have used to describe it.  Cold, however, was.  But that was the point of it all, now wasn\'t it?  It was a test of endurance, of strength and control.  It was the only way she could master every aspect of her lusts and desires.  The woman may have even ventured to admit that it kept her sane.  Or the closest to \'sane\' that she could be.  Her lips drew back with a small motion, becoming something that closely resembled a smirk but it was off.  She declined to comment further on the subject.  The Queen knew how to take care of herself.  She didn\'t need anyone reminding her.

Almost stubbornly she remained silent, watching his eyes moving across her body.  She didn\'t breathe, her body remaining effortlessly still.  She was waiting, though for what exactly the ancient wasn\'t sure.  For the equilibrium to return?  To be able to read whatever thoughts were occupying his mind?  Something like that.

The second he met her eyes, she was unable to mask the battle still raging in her mind.  In the connection of eyes, she was reminded of the want that had not stopped seeping from her since last night and early into the morning.  The ancient struggled to stifle it.  Her expression faltered and she was clumsy, forcing herself to look away as soon as he spoke.

"What indeed." It was a mechanical response.  She shifted, twisting around to reach the ash tray on the table beside her.  She pressed the smoldering filter into the glass receptacle, something that was much to decorative and expensive for its intended purpose.

Distance.

He held onto his breath when she pulled away, a heavy feeling pushing itself up through his esophagus like vomit. His eyes flickered close and he licked the backs of his teeth. It was inexplicable but he was getting sick of it quickly. For his own sake of being caught in the middle, he wanted this burning to stop, to just run its course and get the fuck out of his body that way the balance could be maintained again.

Nikolai couldn\'t explain why he burned so harshly. He knew it had something to do with Sonya -- he had never had it before Sonya -- but beyond this, he couldn\'t put a finger on it. The younger had never said anything extremely revealing to her, never did anything to provoke feelings for the Queen, and certainly never made any notion that anything that resembled love or affection could even come from his body. He wanted her for her sex, for her intelligence, for her company. He never had thoughts of devoting himself to her, to worshipping or marrying her, or even remaining loyal, so to that purpose he couldn\'t understand why she plagued him so.

She was intoxicating; that thick viscous aura that coated everything in a sheet of malignance, that body that he could never quite conquor, that blood that\'s rank with centuries of madness and sex. She was a mountain he couldn\'t summit no matter how hard he tried, an answer he could never understand, a woman he could never call his, despite all of the knotches in his bedpost. Sonya was more beautiful than any other woman he had ever had the misfortune of dealing with -- cheap bimbos with telltale tricks.

But Sonya...

Black Widow Spider.

He didn\'t want her for her cash, for her power, for her age. He wanted her for her experience with a dick and a pussy and what happened when a man slid into her. He wanted her for so much more than that.

But he didn\'t love her. It was simply something that wasn\'t possible.

The only thing more impossible was the idea that she could have loved anything at all besides her own games.

Let alone him.

Nikolai smirked at her and her shitty response. "Fuck you," he said quietly as she turned away from him, ignoring the flares of pain. He let his hand wander over her turning body, grazing her breast and then her ribs as she came back to face him. He could feel her eyes on him as he watched his hand move slowly across her skin, but didn\'t make a move to stop. She could fucking deal with it or throw his hand off if she really wanted.

She let her lips pull up into a smirk at his words as she turned from him, extinguishing the cigarette.  The expression vanished when his hands moved over her skin, as she twisted back toward him.  For a second, she could have sworn that his touch was almost warm, and the sensation was startling to her.  The smallest of tremors caused her muscles to ripple under his fingertips, ending as quickly as it began.  Yes, she needed to feed.  Sonya made no acknowledgement that this had happened, and no matter how she wanted to she made no move to lean into his touch.

If the equilibrium would not come, she would force it.

The woman forced her eyes to lock on him, slowly moving over the swirling ink etched into his skin, following the trail to his shoulders and back down to his fingers again.

In the beginning,

whenever that was,

she just wanted to fuck him.  There was that desire now, but for entirely different reasons.  If that was everything that they were about, everything that they would ever claim to be, then surely such an act would spur them back to the state of normalcy.  This feeling--or whatever it was-- was some kind of fluke, like an invisible fly that needed only to be ignored.  Yes, that was all it was.

But why was it so difficult at this very moment to just walk away?  After all, he had been doing his \'walking away\' off and on for the past few weeks.  She didn\'t want anything from him.  As far as she was concerned, she had taken what she had wanted from him.  She didn\'t need Nadia to tell her that she needed to move on.  Staying in one place had never done the immortal any good in the past and she had developed a taste for moving. Before Nadia had even said anything to her at all, Sonya knew that there wasn\'t anything more that she was looking for from him.  It was only a matter of time before he would leave, before she would find something else to amuse her for the time being.

But hadn\'t she tried doing just that?  He came back.  He was in her house.

Her fingers followed his arm like a bridge to his body, tracing across his chest and to where the sheet barely hid his waist.  The ancient\'s expression was unreadable.

Maybe if she just fucked him like she did in the beginning, maybe if she could just remind herself exactly why they were wasting each other\'s time in the first place.

Just to get it over with.  Just to fill a need.

Maybe if she could just feed, everything would make more sense and it wouldn\'t seem so strange to be sharing a bed after intercourse the previous night.  It was the Thirst, surely.

Her fingers made their way back to the ink patterns on his arms, her eyes trailing behind the paths they carved.

He let her fingers wander over his tattooed skin, the tips grazing the dark outlines of ghouls and inky scars that he had created. For some reason the action struck him funny, that nearly two years -- was it really that long? -- after first meeting her, fucking her, and seeing her work, Sonya was doing the same thing to his work that he had done to hers. She laid there in his arms, skimming the surface of his skin barren of all hair due to the immortal tattooes and she was touching his painted canvas and making his skin prickle, just as he had done to her.

Check mate.

Nikolai had become used to the pang in his throat, sinking into his stomach and blossoming behind his lungs. He had become used to the musk of her cunt slathering his cock as her thick presence suffocated the air. He had become used to her condescending comments and her need for superiority. Yet he still found himself unable to adjust to the feeling of her fingertips -- not her hands, her nails, not her teeth -- the intimate act of tenderness so foreign and discomforting. It made his skin rigid with bumps, as if the cold had affected him all over again. The paths she carved tingled unpleasantly, but he said nothing even when Judas haunted in his ear. Instead the younger wrapped his arm around her back and tucked it between her side and the bed, bringing her as close to him as he could bear. Her breasts were pressed to him, hiding her hardened nipples against his flesh, the flat of her stomach against his and their partners, slack and dry, gently rubbing. Nikolai blinked away the screaming and continued to look at the woman so close.

Something in him wanted to reach out and kiss her, but Judas controlled the urge and he spoke instead. "There\'s a shipment coming in tomorrow, down at the docks. I\'ve got to be there to oversee it and make sure nobody fucks around." He paused for a minute, letting her understand what he was saying. "Interested in coming, or are you going to stay in this house like a fucking creep?"

The ancient inhaled sharply as he pulled her into him, startled by the action that pulled her away from her own thoughts.  Her body was ridged, but she maintained steady, seemingly-unaffected eye contact.  Her fingers ceased their traveling and her hand settled on his shoulder.  Their sexes touching stood as a quiet reminder of last night - whatever it was that they did.

There was a flickering pulse that passed between them, from his eyes and into hers, and then it was gone.

Her lips twitched vaguely in response to his comment.  Somewhere she knew that getting out of the house would speed up this process of returning to the way things should be.  Besides, she needed to feed.

"I suppose," her eyes moved to the distance, as though she were in thought.  "As long as things are not going to be terrifically boring."  She managed to hold a smile for a moment, returning her gaze to his face.

"And as long as I can fuck around with - Oh, what\'s his name."  she paused, feigning forgetfulness.  "Vincent."

He raised an eyebrow at her comment. "Boring? You consider loading up a car with two kilos and then driving it past all of the cops in the fucking city boring?" The younger vampire snorted at her in contempt, enjoying her smile. "Alright."

The casualness of his words didn\'t mirror the internal feeling of the flame in his chest.

"You know he has a bit of a... soft spot for you." He smirked through the side of his mouth, knowing that the younger vampire stood no sort of chance with the ancient -- and loving the idea.  "Used to tell me all the time how much he\'d love to bone you. Except when you fuck around inside of his head."

For one who had survived inquisitions, vampire and witch hunts alike, anything risked boredom. Especially evading the useless human police force.

She continued to smile.  A soft spot?  That wouldn\'t have been her choice of words.

"If he wasn\'t so much fun to fuck around with, I wouldn\'t bother."  The Queen held her almost arrogant expression and spoke with a note of laughter.  For a moment, she felt the normalcy return.  Her mind clambered for it, clutching it tightly.

Surely it would only get easier as the night went on.  Tomorrow things would resume as though nothing had ever happened - not that anything had happened.  As long as she had something to distract herself with.  And the feeding would help.  Oh, God, why did she let it go on so long again?

"What about tonight, then?"  she casually pulled away from him, despite the brief flare in her chest.  Continuing with the motion out of the fear of letting herself slip into any train of thought or weakness of feeling, she sat up and moved to the edge of the bed.  The sheet remained about her waist, just covering her pelvic region as she swung her feet over the side of the mattress.  Her intention was to make it appear as though she intended to dress for the evening.  To go out.  To do something other than sit in bed and talk.  Something more normal.

"What do you mean, \'what about tonight\'?" There was always something that he hated about the way that she always pulled away from him after they had spent time together. It was like she was constantly trying to be a tease, even after he had fucked her. Usually it stirred him pleasantly and made him chase after her all over again, but tonight it bothered him. He had become adjusted to the height and heat in his chest, her hard skin against his tattooed flesh, the weight of her body on his. When she pulled herself away from him, he frowned briefly, putting a hand that had been occupying her body behind his head and remained reclined on the bed, despite her obvious intentions.

"What do you want to do?" He asked her calmly, watching her body move with great intensity. Nikolai almost reached out and brushed his fingers over the smooth flesh on her back. "You have to feed tonight," the younger said deliberately. "You\'re fucking scary-looking when you haven\'t had blood in a month."
