Dig, Dig, Dig.
« on: March 30, 2011, 01:15:11 PM »
Claws in the dirt. Claws in the mud. Claws in the earth. The owner of the rotting, putrid claws, was a demon of horrid complexion. He was digging. He didn\'t need a shovel. His claws tilled the earth far better than the tools of man. He dug deeper and deeper. Earth began to pile up on the sides of the dig site. The monster was getting closer.

He was searching for something in the earth. Buried deep in the dark earth of the cemetery was something the monster wanted. To reach his goal, he dug. The earth was an ugly brown, unlike the native red soils he had been raised in. The soils of his home town were red because of the amount of chemicals dumped into the local canal. When the rains came, the canal would overflow and deposit this unnatural red silt on the earth. The demon had grown near this silt, and had always associated red with the color of soil. This brown, was wrong, and he thought it vocally as he dug.

"Nasty brown earth, makes me want to vomit blood," the bat like creature complained.

He had pointy ears, and ugly wicked fangs. His eyes were a glowing yellow, and his nose was a putrid shaping of flesh placed somewhat symmetrically on his large, odd shaped head. His clothing was jeans and a t-shirt, nothing more. His feet were exposed sausages with long sinister like claws for toenails. His hands at this moment were browner than his already brown skin. They were covered in the dark earth in which he dug.

The claws kept digging. He wanted his prize, and he wanted it now. The rat felt the presence of another, and at this moment he became a shadow. The exposed grave was all that could be seen by whoever had chosen to walk the cemetery by night.

The tall stranger was whistling cheerfully in the brisk chill of the night. The bright tune which danced past his cold lips was as out of place in the cemetery his glaring safety vest or even the askew pith helmet he wore on his head. Across his shoulders the figure had slung a long handled shovel and a heavy Hessian sack. Both these curious items were held in a huge stony fleshed hand that was at odds with the man’s own spindly arms.

Something about the stranger was inherently crooked, as if the man had been put together the wrong way. It wasn’t immediately obvious, but it was noticeable in the way he walked irreverently over the cemetery’s graves, in the way he moved.

Leisurely the stranger paused, surveying the entirety of the cemetery. With his helmet and gear the odd creature looked somewhat like he was on a deranged safari. Eyes hidden by dark hollows zero in on what seems to be a freshly dug grave. Apparently satisfied the man licks his cracked lips in what could be called an attempt to wet them, and continues through the night toward the hole.

Approaching the lip of the grave his heavy footfalls cause tiny rivers of sediment to cascade down the side. The strange man plants his shovel in the rich soil and leans casually over to admire the graves workmanship. Still whistling his merry tune, he shakes his head slowly in disappointment. This was a horrible grave; no one in their right mind would want to be buried down there. He jostles the lumpy sack hanging over his shoulder, and then fishes out an old pocket watch with a cracked face. The ticker looked ridiculously small in the man’s grey hand but he only glanced at it before tucking it away.

With an apathetic shrug, the wraith tosses the sack carelessly into the hole and dusts off his mutated hands.

Yet another satisfied customer.

Benny stayed motionless throughout this little scene. The creature, strange to Benny\'s eyes, was not a being with which Benny was familiar. Benny decided that the tall, dead looking thing must be some sort of fae. It didn\'t smell like a vampire or a demon, and obviously wasn\'t human. Yet, it didn\'t look like a pixie or an imp, or any other sort of great being. This was new creature to Benny.

On the bright side, it was an ugly creature. Benny thought he was much uglier than the creature, but this creature could still scare those who were near it. Benny decided that any being who moved about graveyards as quietly as he did, was a being worth knowing. Benny tiptoed around to the head of the grave stone. He climbed atop it, without a sound and sunk his toe claws into it\'s smooth stone for support. Benny threw his voice off a nearby tree and made it seem like it was coming from behind the creature, when in reality it was coming from only a few feet in front of him.

"That\'s my grave bitch," Benny teased. He followed this with a long hiss. "Things need to come out, not go in."

He was still as dark as the black night.

At the sound of the disembodied voice the wraith spun around, his whistling cutting off in a startled squawk. The tall man searched behind him but could find only the still shadows cast by jutting gravestones. Straw yellow hair whipped around again as the stranger sought for the location of the hissing man.

Reeves smiled, drawing his cold lips over serrated teeth. He couldn’t hear an offending heart beat which he found appropriate. The wraith relaxed, even demons had hearts. Well, most, he resigned thinking of the large sack he’d thrown in the hole.

“…Hello?” the deadman raised his voice, his features still hidden beneath the brim of his pith helmet. He inched his head toward the star-studded heavens “…Lord?... Is that you?”

Benny\'s ears twitched.This... creature was praying? How Benny hated prayer. What a foolish notion. The idea that if you put your hands together and ask an all powerful being for help with the lottery was ridiculous. Benny let out a low hiss of protest. Opportunity had come Benny\'s way and he decided to snatch it!

"Yes, I am your lord," Benny whispered into the dark. "And as your lord I command you to take that sack out of my grave!"

His anger bled through his masquerade. He wanted this, thing to float away as quick as it had come. Yet, Benny felt this being wasn\'t going anywhere.

The ash wraith snickered, putting a thumb beneath the brim of his hat. As the bodiless voice issued its commands the spindly creature snapped its mouth shut, listening intently, and the graveyard appeared to hold its breath. It was a cold, still silence that leached the warmth from blood running through veins. The aggression in the hidden man’s voice was lost within the deathly quiet of the stranger in the pith helmet.

Reeves tasted the emotion in the hissing words of his invisible companion, savouring it. The Immaterial plane had no feeling, no life… or if it did Reeves couldn’t find it. To the straw haired wraith the chaotic and brightly burning passions of this realm were like blooms of colour amongst the stagnant finality that now permeated the graveyard.

The grey skinned man slowly turned his head down from the bleak heavens, following those lingering traces of anger. His hidden friend had so kindly forgot redirect his voice this time, so when Reeves flicked back the brim of his helmet his lopsided gaze fell on the head of the gravestone. The wraith sent invisible fingers to ghost over the area, feeling for any creature which might be hidden to his otherworldly eyes.

“Take it easy man,” Reeves said cheerfully in that gravely throat grabbing voice of his. “Whatever’s down there could probably do with the company.”

Seeing that the creature was now looking his way, Benny concluded the jig was up. He shimmered into view and leaped in front of the grave. He stood only a few inches from the grey skinned man, and let out a hiss of displeasure! He had no idea what this guy\'s deal was, but he was about to find out.

"I need something down there," the now visible vampire hissed! He looked for the horrid reaction people usually had when seeing him, but upon not receiving the look, it gave Benny pause.

"What the fuck are you?" Benny asked. Perhaps that was the reason why the thing wasn\'t scared of him.

Reeves didn’t so much as bat an eyelid as the vampire discarded his shroud. In fact the corpse like features of the wraith’s face seemed frozen in a perpetual grimace. When he spoke, however, the corkscrewed creature was surprisingly animated.

“Who? What? Oh me?” he responded, going from confused to frustrated then invasively friendly. Reeves punctuated his words with exaggerated waves of his hand, unconscious of the proximity he shared with Benny.

“…I’m an angel… probably,” he decided, mulling thoughts over as he absently tapped the handle of his shovel with a finger. “You know. Slaying demons. Trying to earn his wings and all that... Say!” The wraith leaned over on his shovel to peer behind Benny “You wouldn’t happen to have any on you would you?” he said running a charcoal tongue over bladed teeth.
