Haji & Magnus, Rome 1421
« on: February 02, 2013, 12:33:07 PM »
THIS WAS HIS THIRD VISIT TO Magnus Luciferio, but only his second visit to the patrician's domus.  The first time he'd watched as Magnus had entered the attendant's common room, invading their space and looking each of them over before his eyes rested on Haji.  He'd made himself up with his usual eye makeup, lending a hand to his exotic appearance in order to be more appealing to Tiberius, in case his master came looking for someone to share his bed.  He didn't do so all the time, but randomly.  When their eyes had met, Haji had also felt the spark that travelled between them, and he glowered at Magnus, not wanting to be selected because he wanted to save himself for Tiberius.  He couldn't deny him once he'd been chosen, however.

It had taken the smallest of touches before Haji had known that Magnus was the same kind of creature as his master.  The night walker.  The blood drinker.  His heart had raced in his chest because he knew he was vulnerable to such cold strength, and he also knew Tiberius paid homage to this man - which meant he was more powerful than Haji's master.  An amazing feat, considering Haji knew of the strength, the speed, the mind reading.  He sensed there was more, that these cold demons had other powers, but he was happy enough to remain ignorant to them.  These extra powers that they had might prove the kind he didn't want to know about.

The time he spent in Magnus Luciferio's room had been sexually motivated.  Aware of his vulnerabilities to this other man, he remained respectful and wary, answering to every demand eagerly and quietly.  There were a few moments here and there, however, when Magnus referred to him much like one would do an obedient dog, and Haji's passions stirred at this.  He remained outwardly calm, but his gaze gave away his anger, and his mind turned over many insulting things, even though he knew it was dangerous to think negatively around the demons.  Apparently this had inspired Magnus into being more interested in him, and a few questions had been asked of his relationship with Tiberius.  Knowing that Magnus wielded power over his own master, he'd answered them truthfully.

The second time they'd been together, Magnus had specially visited Tiberius' domus and collected him - to walk with him the short distance down the road to his own estate.  It was just as grand as Tiberius', but with more land and grander displays of wealth.  Haji had been impressed, and he suspected Magnus likely knew this.  Haji was always one to present his best face, so he liked it in others.  The second time he'd been fed some nice things, asked a few more questions about how Tiberius ran his attendants (they were on a number system, Haji was eleven.  Magnus had asked for clarification, knowing there weren't that many attendants, so Haji explained on the 11th of the month, he would offer his blood to his master).  Magnus had been thoughtful for a long time, then made more sexual demands of Haji, which were easy enough to submit to, for they were things he'd already done before.

Now, here he was at Magnus' estate a third time, shown to the Senator's bedroom by one of his people - dressed not as a slave but as a citizen.  Haji found this interesting, and remained near the door until he was called further into Magnus' room.  He'd been collected by the citizen this time, which had disappointed him somewhat.  When Magnus had come the second time, he'd felt important.  He liked feeling important, and now that Tiberius was playing with his new toy, he was feeling second grade.  It angered him.

Magnus was no stranger to politics. He had been playing with them all of his life, and now was no different than before. He was old, and he knew what he had to do to stay in power. Age was not power, though it sometimes aided it, most especially when one was of his race. These human senators were slaves, pliant in his firm hands. They were boring, not challenging at all. But then there were young upstarts such as Tiberius that allotted Magnus a bit of…fun.

Oh, Tiberius was nothing if not respectful to the older vampire, but Magnus hadn't lived this long by lowering his guard. Regardless of whether or not Tiberius was truly plotting against him, Magnus had no intention of taking it laying down. There was much to be said about gathering information concerning your allies as much as your enemies, for far too easily did the two categories mesh.

It hadn't taken long to find his way in. The slaves and the help were always the most susceptible to bribery, and as luck would have it, Magnus had found Tiberius' to be more than helpful. Haji, he was called; and the slave was certainly delightful. He had only seen him a handful of times, but already he had decided that Haji was a weak point in Tiberius' fortress. The younger vampire kept many secrets from Magnus…but it was hard to keep secrets from those who lived and attended you. Magnus himself tended to keep slaves around only for a few months before ridding himself of them in one way or another. Some survived, naturally--he knew better than to kill every one.

Magnus had had a few things to attend to that night, but he had ordered the presence of his newest toy on his return. Tiberius didn't seem to mind, which was just as well for Magnus. And if he minded, he at least didn't mind so loudly, meaning that Magnus was free to ignore his rumblings, at least for now.

He walked down the hall slowly for his kind, though to humans it appeared to be a quick pace. His royal purple, fur-lined robe blew out behind him as he walked, his feet barely making a sound. He wore a black shirt and breeches underneath the purple, his fingers adorned with rings. He had the appearance of one extremely rich and powerful, and that was exactly how he wanted it. The doors opened before Magnus as he returned to his bedroom, his pace slowing as he took in the appearance of his new toy.

"Good, you're here," he stated as the servants cleared the room, leaving them alone.

Haji's mouth twitched a smile, before he pulled it to his lips full force, revealing his hesitance at being here.  He had no say in the matter, not when Tiberius had declared to his attendants that they were to serve Magnus as they served him.  Haji knew, however, that this invitation had been cast and only meant while Magnus had stayed under Tiberius' roof for the night, while Tiberius had been entertaining a few important guests.  He doubted it extended to now.  It occurred to Haji that this was likely the only reason Magnus had personally collected him the first time he'd wanted to bring him over to his house - just in case Tiberius was around to halt it.  If he even would.  He was off playing with his blonde frigid bitch right now so what did he care?

"Vir Optime, Magnus Luciferio," Haji declared respectfully, dropping gracefully to his knees and bowing his head.  This was an especially old custom for slaves towards their masters, and something Tiberius had instructed his attendants to do for Magnus each time.  Haji wasn't sure what such a thing might mean - to use a centuries old greeting like this - but he was a clever boy who had his suspicions.  He knew Magnus was a powerful blood drinker, and thought of both him and his master as demonic creatures, it made sense that both of them were far older than they appeared, using their magic to make themselves look like pretty humans.  He shuddered to think what their real shape might be, and wished that he would never know.

It was interesting to see (just before he'd knelt and averted his eyes) that Magnus chose to wear the new fashions that were making their way into Rome, instead of the tunics and robes that many of the other Consul, Quaestors and even other Senators wore.  Tiberius followed the old fashions also, draping himself in swathes of rich materials instead of the tighter and more practical clothing that was modern fashion.  Not only more practical, but more interesting, to Haji's eyes.

He himself was dressed in his coloured robe - a golden item stolen from Persia and certainly not something fitting for a slave, but then he was a personal attendant to an important man(blood-drinker), not just any slave.  It was cinched at the waist with a black strip of silk, something he'd taken from Tiberius' personal wardrobe without asking.  He was waiting for his master to notice.  Thin leather sandals on his feet completed his outfit.  He was happiest keeping his feet bare, but it was of a higher status to wear shoes.  A higher status for the owners to provide such for their slaves.  He was property - a reflection of Tiberius and how he wished to see himself, but lately his master hadn't chosen to look at his reflection at all.

Magnus wasted no time in removing his houppelande, as he had no use for it in the bedroom. He wasn't quite sure the rest of the gentry were catching on to the change in fashion, but he was sure he could carry it through. Let it be known that Magnus Luciferio was first to wear the new fashions, not that the great politician had been swayed into tomfoolery by his tailor. Magnus did not like to be taken for a fool, and he was sure that the fashion would catch on, if only because he wore it.

He draped the houppelande over a couch as he approached the slave's kneeling form, already planning several steps ahead. Haji would, inevitably, end up in his bed naked that night. However, before that happened, Magnus hoped to extract more information about Tiberius' compound--and the people in it--from him. After that, he would have to decide whether or not to drink from Haji. He truly wanted to, knowing how angry it would make Tiberius, but he didn't want to put such a willing and valuable source of information in any sort of harm…for now, at least.

If he could manage to get Haji on the tenth, he would surely try it, given that Tiberius only drank from him on the eleventh. How silly, to schedule his feedings so. Magnus drank from whichever slave he wanted, whenever he wanted; he didn't care about the consequences. Humans were his fodder and slaves were easy to come by, just as they were easy to go. Blood was easy to come by, in this age. He only kept around those that proved themselves interesting or useful. The head of his household, for instance, was very useful; it wouldn't do to have to train a new one all the time.

"Haji," he acknowledged him, choosing to use his name. He had to play nice with the human right now, he reminded himself. It was easy for him to be powerful…it was a little harder to pretend to care about the human enough to persuade him.

Oh, Magnus was sure that if he truly wanted, he could simply dominate Haji to his will. That is, if he wanted Tiberius to know what he was up to. As it was, he found it far more challenging to goad the slave into rebellion using words instead. Pretending to care had gotten him rather far in life--and death--though, and so Magnus knew what he had to do. The power was, how to be kind, yet not weak. Tiberius…now Tiberius was weak.

"Rise. Tell me of your night, for I am sure that it cannot have been more boring than mine." His night hadn't been boring in the least, at least to him. He doubted that Haji would like a detailed recounting of how Magnus had had another slave's back torn to shreds for his own amusement, however. Well, his own amusement hadn't been the only reason--the slave had been filching extra food from the kitchen, and Magnus needed a good example.

He was thrilled when his name was spoken.  He liked being the favourite dalliance of Magnus, even though it frightened him too.  There was an intensity to this blood-drinker that Tiberius failed to match.  Oh, he loved that man with all his heart, but it was well on the way to being broken.  He knew he was foolish to have allowed himself to care, but he hadn't been able to stop himself.  Plus, it had been to his benefit, at the beginning.

Haji rose to his feet when commanded.  "If you forgive me, Vir Optime, I find all that you do exciting," he apologised because he was contradicting what the Senator had said, and even though it was complimentary, it was possible that Magnus wouldn't enjoy the argument.

He remained where he was.  With Tiberius he would've approached, pawed at him, instigated the beginning of their relations.  There would be no doing that with Magnus.  He didn't want to mis-step.  Crossing his boundaries would be dangerous.  Still, he could feel Magnus' authority from here, he didn't have to be pressed close to the man for that.

Well, that wouldn't do at all. Of course, Magnus hadn't exactly commanded Haji to give him every bit of information about Tiberius' compound, either…or at least not in so many words. The human had taken it as a casual question that he was free to elude with flattery. Not that Magnus minded flattery--everyone loved flattery, after all. He briefly scanned Haji's mind to make sure the human wasn't purposefully eluding the question, however.

"I'm sure," he answered, satisfied of Haji's innocent intent. He placed a hand under Haji's elbow, escorting him to the bed. It was the only piece of furniture in his bedroom aside from a table near his bed and the couch over which he had thrown his houppelande. A wardrobe stood against the wall, doors closed firmly and hiding his other garments.

"You still haven't told me about your night." It was a statement as well as a gentle reminder that Magnus had asked him a question. The senator sat down first, his hand still on Haji's arm. He hoped his intent to have Haji sit beside him was well implied.

"Surely you have done something more than sleep!"

The slave followed as he was ushered, sat as was intended.  He knew how to follow cues, but Haji's eyes widened in dismay at his mistake once it was pointed out to him.  He'd neglected Magnus' question not out of disrespect or even ignorance, but out of habit.  When Tiberius asked him similar questions he never truly wanted to know, to the point Haji had stopped answering them at first to see if they would be missed, when they weren't he stopped answering them out of spite.  Then it had developed into something he barely heard.  Now, when faced with another master, he'd made an amateur's mistake, and one that could have terrible consequences.

"I apologise deeply, Vir Optime," he said hurriedly, wanting to correct himself, but also aware of each word as it spilled out of his mouth.  It wouldn't do to follow up one mistake with another.  "I have a master that does not care for my activities when I'm not with him, but likes to pretend he does.  I should have recognised your greater generosity and answered that I began my night with my lessons, that I bathed privately afterward, and practised with my mizmar before you beckoned."

He dipped his head to acknowledge Magnus' summons within his explanation.

Thankfully, the human was quick to correct his mistake. That was good, as Magnus did not like blithering fools. The vampire reached over to cup Haji's neck, running his thumb across Haji's jugular. He lusted after the boy's blood, but he told himself to wait--he would gain more use from the boy before he divested him of his lifeblood. There was no question about whether or not he would kill Haji--it was merely a matter of time for every human he came across, after all. It was certainly a possibility that he would one day turn a human, but the thought of that human being Haji had not entered his mind. No, Haji was far more useful as a weapon against Tiberius than a plaything for Magnus.

"Perhaps your master needs to be convinced that what you do is worth caring about," he suggested. "If a master does not care for his slave, then what use would his slave be?"

Haji had given him the perfect opening, and Magnus would be a fool not to take it. Lessons, a bath and music? Bah, how mundane. Still, the elder had no intention of outing his intentions too early; he had much work to do with Haji, first. His hand dropped from the boy's neck.

"What does Tiberius teach you? I suppose all of the boring things I teach my own slaves. Anything interesting?" And was there anything Tiberius didn't want his slave to know, was a better question.

Haji knew Tiberius' teachings were the kind that would be frowned upon by other masters, yet there was no denying Magnus such a direct question.  He'd been ordered by Tiberius to please this blood-demon after all, and he'd already made one mistake by not answering a question immediately.  He didn't want to make another.

"I have learned to read and write," Haji said, understanding that such a thing was shocking and might be ammunition to Magnus if he wished to tip Tiberius out of council.  He wasn't sure how politically involved his own master was, but knew that he had many contacts in the political world due to the orgies he attended.  Both Tsiru and Haji had first hand experience of what went on there.  "I have access to Tiberius' personal library," he continued, not mentioning that all of the more potent literature was written in Greek, for the aristocrats.  Tiberius was teaching his slaves to read and write in Latin, and Haji - even though he didn't do his homework and couldn't be bothered giving the tutor his full attention - still resented the fact that Tiberius was keeping this more elevated language from him.

And here, Magnus was at a dilemma. He, for one, would never stoop so low as to teach someone something so menial. Yet he desired Haji to gain as much knowledge as possible, as Magnus knew that knowledge was important…useful. Smart humans were useful. Stupid humans got torn to shreds for his entertainment.

On the other hand, teaching a slave such things were frowned upon, and it could very well be disastrous for Tiberius, if Magnus chose to reveal it the correct way. He did not know how it could possibly be useful to him at this time, but it was a chink in the other vampire's armor. And Magnus had no qualms about making that chink quite a bit bigger.

"A literate slave," he drawled sarcastically. "I do believe that winter has found Hell at last."

Magnus smirked ever so slightly, hardly enough to tell that he was amused. Reading and writing, and access to Tiberius' personal library. Dear, dear…this was more than he had even hoped for, though he wasn't entirely sure how to use it against Tiberius yet. Perhaps insinuate that he kept slaves around for more than warming his bed? He would have to think about it.

"And what, pray tell, do you read from your master's library? Latin? Greek? Or…more provocative texts?" He was speaking, of course, of pornographia, as the Greeks called it. The illustration of prostitutes or prostitution, when literally translated.

As usual, his words carried a double meaning, hints towards what they would be doing later, after this small chat. Magnus wanted more information first, however; Haji had already revealed something he probably shouldn't have to Magnus; how much more useful could this slave be?

Haji knew he should be offended by Magnus' words about his literacy, but he wasn't brave enough to do so.  It made him realise that Tiberius was weak in this way, that he couldn't drive so much fear into Haji's heart that even his emotions were kept at bay.

"I haven't selected any books from his library, though he's invited me to," Haji said, feeling like this information would disappoint Magnus, but unable to tell him anything differently.  It was the truth.  "I can only read Latin, he doesn't teach us Greek," he clarified further, making sure to address all of Magnus' questions this time, considering his slip last time.  "If he has anything provocative, he must use me as a test.  Or he used to."

He stopped himself from speaking about Anatoli, not wanting to alert Magnus to the fact there was another slave in Tiberius' house.  He doubted Anatoli would be handed over so equably, in any case.

"Perhaps he wants to keep me fresh for you," he suggested, and managed a tiny smile.
