The Academy's Opening Fete
« on: April 14, 2019, 10:40:10 AM »
The carpark was lined with cars and many more were directed onto the grass. Hundreds of people were milling around, roaming around the gardens, checking out the exterior because the back entrance was locked - though the hole-in-the-wall diner was open, serving blood and coffee to potential and enrolled students and there were a few stalls scattered around the courtyard with pamphlets about the various classes, selling parking vouchers for the semester or even a few handmade items like miniature crystal balls and other witchy items for the first official magic class that would begin in semester two at the building. There was a lot of excited chatter as time ticked on, closer to the cutting of the ribbon that would allow everyone to move through the building and check out the rooms. A lot of the Ward were there in their crisp black uniforms, looking like a private security company but having the clout of supernatural force. Nobody was looking to make trouble though - it was a happy occassion.

Ben was overwhelmed by the amount of people he had on the property. It was a very large property but it still felt full. He hadn't realised that this many people were interested. More classes meant more potential students of course. It had been a famine at the start with nobody interesting in teaching, then they'd all seemingly poured in at once. The lecture hall at the Chambers wasn't quite ready yet, but classes could start here and then transfer there when the time came.

He looked at Digital near the sound equipment and got a thumbs up that it was good for him to go on. Kerr and Ichabod were at his side and he hugged them both before moving up the stairs and standing at the top of them in front of the main doors which were open but where a red ribbon had been strung across the front of them. Owen stood nearby, having made sure that nobody was going to limbo under it and give themselves a preview tour.

Ben switched the microphone on and fumbled with it for a moment before looking out at the crowd and listening as the chatter died down and eyes started turning his way.

Oh my god
There are so many faces down there
So many fucking people look at them all so many
and they're all looking at me!
What the hell was I even going to say?

He smiled nervously at them, trying to see if he recognised anybody in the crowd.

He had may his way to the opening night as a teacher, holding his own thermos with Coffee he brought from home. Not that he would have minded coffee from the hole in the wall diner near by but he expected them to be busy on a night like this. In fact he knew they would likely be busy most nights from now on thanks to the school, maybe not nearly as bad as tonight, but the school opening would be good for their business for sure.

He stood out near the front of the crowd, able to see over most of the students anyway, he wanted a clear shot of the opening as the further away he would be then the harder it would have been for him to make anything out. He noticed the security detail also there a little confused as to why, but figured that maybe most supernatural beings would be more boisterous than mortals. He knew that he was at best a weird in between of Mortal and Supernatural, but knew more about the mortal side of things, also hence given what he is going to be teaching while here had to do with the more mortal side of things as it was. He was excited to start his lessons however has he had a great idea for a first class and the pathline it could take from there.

He heard someone take the mic and looked toward that person, if he had to guess, it was likely Ben, his interviewer. He wouldn't be sure until they had spoken however. He wore his usual outfit of a white button down shirt with the first two buttons undone, black dress pants, and black dress shoes.

"And then I told him, 'you can't put your fangs there!'"

The small gathering of chittery students chittered and chirped at Dr. Barrow's story, more interested in the man than the words he was saying. A sexy posh accent will do that for you, and Dr. James Barrow had known for years that saying even basic words had Americans and Canadians dropping their pants or skirts respectively. The crowd of about five or six students he had huddled around him had all been early arrivals and all had already signed up for his Friday night class. He saw it as his duty to the Academy to be in demand, and to make every student know his name. Even if he wasn't teaching them he might be counseling them, and the first step to an effective counseling relationship was building rapport.

He was dressed to impress. He wore brown khakis and loafers with a navy button up shirt and tweed suit jacket. He looked like a stereotypical college professor, with his oversized, black framed glasses and slicked back hair only adding to the scholarly feel. He looked too young for the current outfit, the soul of an older man coming through a young man's body. His nails were painted with clear polish to reflect the lights and he smelled faintly of cigarettes. Once the students were properly buttered he bid them goodbye, one female student in particular looking quite despondent that the good doctor was leaving. He weaved through the growing room of people, and his eyes landed on a few of the more notable inhabitants.

First he saw Ben Samson, his employer and recent fellow trial witness. The sight dropped him an image. Ben's arms and legs were all being pulled in different directions. One appendage was held by Kerr, another by Jake McCloud. A youth he didn't recognize pulled another, and the last one was pulled by Lazarus, the ancient from the trial. Dr. Barrow wondered if the vision was as literal as it looked, or if some greater turmoil existed inside the young vampire. He waved the Queen's wave at Ben, hoping to catch his attention so pleasantries could be exchanged. He saw one other interesting chap, another instructor. He was blind and yet saw more than most. He was like something out of a Greek tragedy, the blind prophet on the top of the mountain. Dr. Barrow could understand wisdom mixed with disability.

He worked his way towards Ben, feeling like the host was his primary responsibility, however, he saw the mic turn on, and so he stopped a few feet from his employer. He didn't like standing alone, and so moved to stand near the blind prophet.

Jake and Murphy were in the line of cars working their way up the driveway. The vampire wore a black sweater, slacks and a belt. He wasn't sure as to the dress code for such an occasion, and neither wanted to look shabby or overdressed. His hair was neatly parted to the left, his heavy bang swoop obscuring his eye. His nails were painted black as he sometimes did, and he had one hand holding Murphy's. Since the night they'd spoken about trying to date they'd seen each other a few times. Jake had wanted to take it a little slow, as they'd started on rocky foundations, and had demons still yet to face in their future, literally and metaphorically. Despite his intent, he was falling fast for the delightful human. The feeling of ease Murphy brought out in him had only grown, and everyone at the White Rabbit was talking about what a good mood he'd been in since Murphy started seeing him.

He was nervous for tonight. He hadn't seen Ben since the night at the former chambers and the younger vampire's last comment had been some ridiculous fart about not putting Jake's name on anything. He promised himself that he'd behave, and this was a test to see if he and Ben could be bigger people for Murphy's sake. He was willing to try, but hoped their period of chatter would be brief. He was curious to see the building and meet some of the teachers. He also wanted to support Sam's class, and had even singed up to take it. Jake was here as an anonymous donor and a student. Murphy was here as a friend to Ben he assumed. He wondered if his future boyfriend would take classes as well. It might be fun to do something like that together. The one area of their growing connection that concerned him, other than all the Ben nonsense, was that they didn't have enough in common, and so he was hoping to pick a few things they could work on together or enjoy together. He also hoped Murphy would pick some activities too. He looked at the handsome man he shared a car with and leaned in, giving him a quick peck on the cheek.

"Excited," he asked, his own nervousness apparent from his tone of voice.

He actually had his hair up in a more traditionally feminine style. There was a braid on either side of his head that lead up to a kind of an upwards pointing ponytail. He wanted to look kind of nice for the ceremony without being too formal, and given his slightly sheltered upbringing he didn't really see hairstyles as feminine or masculine, which would explain why he kept his hair on the long end. He actually enjoyed styling it a bit.

He noticed a fellow colleague of his walk up and stand near him, or at least he presumed it was a fellow colleague. He recognized the Aura having been around when he was being interviewed, and he didn't expect anyone who got shafted a job to have shown up. He noticed the man was on the shorter end, and could also tell he was a Vampire. He took a sip from his ceramic thermos, which actually had an interesting design to it. It was solid black, with an Asian inspired artstyle of a white tiger and some cherry blossom branches behind it. He was aware of the design on the mug, after talking about his unique name to a Starbucks employee, they actually suggested the mug for him to buy as it was designed after the Chinese God Byakko. It also got him discounted coffee/tea so he was all for that.

"So, enjoying the pre-ceremony so far?" He asked the Doctor that now stood next to him, seeing as Ben hadn't quite spoken yet, maybe was waiting for everything to calm down a bit first in the crowd. He figured he could become quite when Ben would start to speak, it wasn't that hard to stop talking and be respectful for when the time came for it.

Five students had signed up to take his class and he couldn't be more delighted. He had left a clipboard with a sign up sheet on the table that the organizers had given him for self-promoting, but hadn't really expected anyone to express interest. His courses were, admittedly, a touch theological, aimed at sustainability of immortal life in a mortal world. These classes lacked the flare of the hands-on techniques of telepathy or feeding, and he was perfectly fine with this acknowledgement. Instead he had played to his own strengths, suggesting to Ichabod Conners that once the excitement and novelty of immortality flared and began to fade, maintenance would be required to remain safe, even in an immortal city. After all, Damien Evans was well versed in navigating the human world undetected.

It felt strange at first, applying for a position in the Academy as a lecturer. Damien had neither the prior experience with inquiring about potential employment or being in an institution like this - teaching or being taught - and the experience left him feeling rather awkward about the whole thing. Ichabod had called him only two days after the in-person interview offering him a position that he and Ben Samson - and potentially Kerr Galvin, for surely he wasn't far from the situation - had agreed upon, with a stipend that was brow-raisingly high. Money had not been the motivating factor in his life for many years - thanks to Aquillia Industries and the invention of light-activated shutters. Upon agreeing to lecture two courses, he demanded that they pay him for only one of the courses and keep the other for a student who needed the Academy's services instead. Damien himself would do the same with his  takeaway salary for fledges within his own family who wanted the opportunity.

Upon Rachel's suggestion, Damien had dressed in business casual attire - good blue denim, straight-legged and crease-free, and a white button up tucked in. For a much-needed overtone of formality, as it was desperately needed in his opinion, he added an onyx single-breasted suit jacket and whole cut Oxfords for shoes, the leather shining like satin. His brown hair was lightly tousled with a matte pomade, swept back off his forehead with a surprising amount of lift - another one of Rachel's touches. The image made him look older, Rachel confirmed, but Damien still had his doubts.

Damien pulled away from Rachel for another brief moment to check the new roster again, contently scanning the names for a third time, as if the number of students had changed in the few moments of being there. He straightened the pile of syllabi that he had printed at home and repositioned them on the table in front of him, before getting the usual prompts from Rachel to stop fussing and come back.

Rejoining his companion, he held his arm out for her to slip hers in, as was their habit in public. They walked the front of the grounds to the new Academy for Supernaturals, nodding and shaking hands with some of the familiar faces from the city, Rachel playing her part perfectly, albeit a bit more shy than he had seen her in a long time. It made him smirk crookedly, remembering her forwardness from the night before.

They were off to the left of the stairs, somewhere towards the center of the crowd near the edges. Tonight, with the presence of the City Ward and countless other immortals around him and Rachel, his guard could fall a bit more. Laurent wouldn't show up tonight, he was sure of that. With all the immortals, lights, and attention here, the miserable creature would be dead before he ever even approached Rachel. Tonight, Damien could actually try to allow both of them to have a good time without his fear and anxiety getting in the way.

"Would you like a drink?" He asked his lover, kissing her hand casually. He was interested in obtaining a glass for himself, although he wouldn't have minded stepping away with Rachel for a quick moment. Damien pushed that thought away quickly before the sensation of wanting to blush filled him.

"Maybe... Why, do you?" Rachel gave him a sly look, tucking a lock of hair behind one ear.

"You're making that face again."  She whispered teasingly.

A drink would be nice, take the edge off her nerves a bit.  It had been a really long time since she was in a crowd like this.  All this socializing was leaving her a bit light-headed, but it was exciting.  When Damien had first told her about teaching a couple of classes, she thought it was strange that he was even considering doing that.  The idea grew on her, for a variety of reasons, and she thought it would be good for him to do something...well, different.  It was cute to watch him get excited in that subtle way when he thought he was hiding it.  She loved that.

Rachel had picked a simple rusty-rose colored wrap dress and a pair of flats for the evening.  They were going to be walking around and she didn't want to be hurting by the end of the night.  Her head was already buzzing to remember all the names and faces.  One on one interactions had been fine.  She was feeling more quiet than shy, letting Damien guide the majority of conversation and speaking for introductions and only when addressed.  When she was feeling particularly self-conscious about being seen as just some arm-piece she contributed a witty remark or asked a question.  Rachel knew how to socialize.  She just hadn't gotten out much.

Astrid was keeping to herself mostly, drifting around and getting a feel for the campus.  Landing this job had been a huge break for her, and she was anxious to start.  She hadn't expected to get called after the interview--but took it as a good sign.  The witch certainly didn't look the part of professor.  Though she had decided on a more professional black jean, long solid-grey teeshirt, and black suit jacket.  As professional as she would get without being fancy anyway.

She was most interested in meeting the other professors, to get an idea of the types of people she would be seeing around.  A supernatural school was something she hadn't encountered yet--well, not one so inter-species integrated.  She made her way to the crowd that had gathered in front of the stairs.  The sound of the microphone switching on pulled her attention to Ben as she found a spot to stand and watch.

"A party is a party, is a party," the good doctor replied cryptically, his true feelings about the celebration being wrapped up inside him.

As the blind man spoke to him, Dr. Barrow heard a name whispered into his ear. It had to belong to the blind man. Otherwise, why would the sight show it to him?

"Dr. Hofflan, right," he said, sticking out the old palm for a bit of a grease. His hand was manicured, and an expensive, gold watch was on his wrist. A claddagh ring made of pewter was on his left hand, the heart, crown and hands all coming together in the center. It looked old, and like it had weathered many a storm.

They didn't have long before Ben spoke, but he quickly added, "I'm Dr. James Barrow, Academy mental health clinician, Clairvoyant and teacher of psychology. And you teach... wait don't tell me... how to splice genes? No. How to tell us supers apart? Closer. Oh you teach the myths and reality class!"

If Dr. Barrow hit any nerves with Dreki, his face didn't show it. He looked utterly pleasant, and the process of how he'd surmised his vocation and the other details he just seemed to know was a mystery. His eyes seemed to almost glow under the frames of his glasses.

"Actually it's Dreki, Mr. Dreki Arach, not Doctor." He said keeping a surprisingly neutral face and shook the hand of the fast talking doctor, But internally he was concerned. The fact that he picked out Dr. Hofflan's name and Gene Splicing out of literally anything else led him to believe either Dr. Barrow was who he said he was and Clairvoiant, or an actual physical babysitter from the Facility, which made Dreki instantly distrust the man. What was Dr. Hofflan sick and tired of just popping into Dreki's brain whenever he wanted? His handshake was bit on the firmer side, not enough to hurt but probably a bit more pressure that what he normally put out just due to what Dr. Barrow just said to him.

He went back to looking at Ben on the podium after the handshake, figured it was probably best to not purposefully interact with Dr. Barrow unless he had to, and if the facility sent him like Dreki thinks they did, then Dreki knew that the guy probably wouldn't leave him alone, even if he thought he was alone. The party was just made a bit sour, and he wanted it to end soon, to at least not have to worry about this kind of bullshit when he was just trying to have a good time outside of his house for a change. 'God forbid I try and get a job on my own merit without approval from the facility, they send someone just to watch me anyway' He thought to himself as he sipped his coffee.

Ichabod followed Ben up the stairs, trying to send him calming feelings. It was amazing how many people had shown up, but brilliant to see. They had put so much work into this and it was actually coming together.

*

Seb strolled through the crowd, enjoying the mass of people who were all coming together for the good of the city. He’d greeted some people, making small talk, so he found a space near the edge to watch Ben do his thing. Amazing how one so young had accomplished so much.

*

Murphy turned to press a deeper kiss to Jake’s lips, squeezing the vampire’s hand. He had thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Jake better over the past few weeks, going dancing, chatting all night. They were taking things slowly, which Murphy was more than happy with, but there had been a few occasions where it had been tricky for them (well, Murphy at least).

“Yes, it should be a good night,” Murphy said with a smile, unsure of whether Jake’s comment was a question, or a statement about how he was feeling. He wasn’t sure why Jake was nervous really. Jake and Ben didn’t get along, but it surprised Murphy that Jake was nervous about seeing him.

“And I was thinking we could maybe end it with a repeat of our first meeting, if you get hungry,” he added with a seductive tone, letting his hand land on Jake’s thigh, squeezing gently.

They were soon out of the car and joining the crowd inside, and Murphy wove his fingers through Jake’s, urging him through the crowd. He’d been here plenty of times with Ben, but it ws so different when it was full of people. He was looking forward to starting classes. He was especially interested in Sam’s class – if there was any chance Jake would sire him, Murphy wanted to be prepared for what lay ahead.

He knew Jake and Ben didn’t get on, but Murphy wanted to support his best friend, so he wove through the crowd, still grasping Jake’s hand and leading him to the front of the crowd, so he could see Ben properly.

“I’m really excited about Sam’s class, finding out more about your clans,” he said quietly to Jake, pulling him close with an arm around his waist before turning his gaze to the stage to give Ben a reassuring smile.

Kerr remained at the bottom of the stairs, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. It wasn't an easy task, considering everywhere he turned he saw his name on brass plaques, in typed print, on signs beside paths. He felt like a fraud. He really hoped no-one would approach him because he could just imagine how awkward the conversation would be.

'So... aren't you supposed to be dead? Did you think up the idea for this place? Ohhh, so you teach at your own academy? How darling!' Ugh.

He'd dressed in a black zoot suit (sans hat) with silver pinstripes, a vest and a wide silvery-blue tie and pocket square that purposefully matched Ben's eyes. He had his hands folded in front of him and a polite smile fixed to his face. He made eye contact as little as possible but if it did happen, he inclined his head in polite greeting. His posture didn't scream 'stay away from me' but he couldn't help feeling like it - especially when Ichabod left him all alone.

It was all about Ben and Ichabod tonight; pride and love flowed out of him towards both of them, hopefully buoying them through their welcome speech.

Saint Sabrina, as promised, made an appearance. She dressed simply but elegantly in black and silver. The centerpiece of her outfit was a perfectly-preserved python skull carved with runes that hung from a silver chain, nestled just below the hollow of her throat.

She kissed cheeks and shook hands, oohed and ahhed where appropriate, and vanished when it wouldn't be rude to do so.

Shae weaved her way through the crowd as she tried to find Saraekiel. She was dressed casually for a change and wore a pair of black jeans with a blush colored, sleeveless, halterneck silk blouse and black flats. She had collected a few pamphlets about the different courses offered by that academy and had to admit she was intrigued by the curse ethics one and the introduction to making magical tools, which was were Saraekiel said he would meet her; by the booth selling crystal balls and occult paraphernalia.

She was in the process of sending a text telling him she was lost in the crown when she inadvertently stumbled into someone.

Her head flew up as she looked at them in alarmed surprise "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!" she said in apology as she reached out to clasp their elbow in an attempt to steady herself and them but manages to drop her phone and pamphlets in the process.

Siobhán sipped at her coffee as she scanned the crowd, searching for a familiar face, any familiar face but the crowd was huge and she felt lost in the sea of people. She had come because she had heard the academy was finally opening and she had wanted to check out the classes and the building itself. this was were Flick had said he lived and she was half hoping to stumble into him, but mainly she came out of pure curiosity. Her hair was loose and fell around her shoulders and she wore a simple white blouse with a black jacket and black skinny jeans with a pair of black Chelsea boots, around her neck was a simple black leather collar with a amethyst pendant that nestled against the base of her neck.

Saraekiel tapped the fingers of his right hand against his hip as he waited for Shae by the crystal ball booth. he was dressed in blue jeans, a white shirt and an open tan coloured leather jacket. he was getting impatient and narrowed his eyes slightly in irritation as he slowly started counting to 100. If she wasn't here by then she was on her own.

Arutha's hunter eyes went huge as he saw the huge crowd of people the second he stepped out of Kevla's dark blue sports car. It was a newer-ish model from Hyundai. He couldn't remember which one it was. For he didn't follow cars as much as he did for motorcycles. Still holy crap, he hadn't known that there was this many people interested or involved in this supernatural Academy.

When he had heard about this event from Psych, he knew that he had to try to check it out. For it sounded beyond amazing and possibly the answer to their prayers when it came to Naoise's collar. As for talking his companions into this, it has been surprising easy. For his twin, Kevla had pounced the opportunity and then happily begged Psych to come with. She even decided to sweeten the deal and decided to try to make it a double date, Kevla, Psych and then Naoise and himself.

As such, he put extra care in his appearance. His hair was pulled into a neat tail. He wore a teal blue dress shirt and some form hugging black slacks, along with some matching leather shoes.

Kevla had chosen a simple vibrant purple a-line knee length dress. It had a certain flowiness that she loved about the skirt as she stepped out of the car. She had decided to go for something not over the top for she wasn't certain what the dress code was. So her shoes matched that same theme and were simple black flats. As for her hair, it was loose tawny fall against her back.

"Oh my gosh you guys. Look at all of this." she said, looking back Psych and then her brother.

Arutha's lips twitched with amusement at that, waiting to hear Naoise's take on it.

Psych stepped out of the car and stood behind Kevla. He had also dressed to impress and wore skin tight low riding black, leather pants and a dark purple dress shirt with the top two buttons left undone, over this he is wearing an open, simple leather jacket and a pair of handmade black leather shoes, his hair was styled to fall around his shoulders and face, looking all wind blown and wild. He flicked his eyes over kevla, totally ignoring the crowd and smiled broadly as he stepped up beside her.

"I am looking at it all. You look absolutely ravishing by the way" he said quietly into her ear.

Naoise slipped out of the car after Arutha and was instantly on guard as the huge crowd pressed around them.

*Dagda's Fiery Balls* he exclaimed in shocked surprise in reply to Kevla, *it's a circus faire! I'm going to get trampled for sure*

He too had been intrigued by the academy when Psych had told them about it and had been excited at the prospect at coming here, but now as he scanned the forest of supernatural beings milling around the campus he wasn't so sure. There was a lot of them and he could easily get lost or trampled upon, but as he looked up at Arutha he forgot his fears and his worries, this was their first date and he wanted to enjoy every moment of it.

Arutha looked amazing, sophisticated and sexy as hell, whilst he, well he was naked as usual.

*You however look amazing Mo gra* he sent on a private communication thread

Kevla blushed at the compliment and turned to Psych, smiling happily back at him. "You look amazing too." she said warmly before leaning a little closer to try to kiss his cheek and whisper in his ear. "I'll show you how much later on tonight." she playfully promised. This was more than true. For those pants and the way Psych's shirt was partially open made her think of all the ways they could have fun later on tonight.

Though first thing was first, it was time to enjoy their date and maybe find out more about this intriguing academy while they were at it. Her lips then twitched with amusement at Naoise's shocked exclamation. "Yes it's alot of people, but I don't think that my brother is going to let you of his sight." she stated as she glanced over at Arutha.

Arutha blushed at Naoise's private compliment."Thank you, Kit. You look wonderful too both as a cat and yourself." he said honestly. "Now let's stay close and explore this place. Would you mind if I picked you up?" he asked as he bent down to try.
