Dr. Barrow fought to suppress a smirk, and stood graciously.

"Same time next week? The first session is a consultation, on the house. Going forward it's $125 for an hour for patient's without insurance. I also do sliding scale for those will less income. Shall I mark you down for full, or reduced payment?"

He extended a hand for her to shake.

"Full."  She sounded insulted and made no effort to hide it.  Reduced payment.  Did she look like she needed that?

Sonya stood and did not take his hand, turning on her heel and walking out of the office, the building, and to the Escalade idling on the sidestreet nearby.  Her driver scrambled to open the door before she reached the car and she leveled a scalding glare at him before entering.  With a shaking hand, she fumbled through her clutch for a clove cigarette, placed it between her lips and lit the tip.  She leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes.

"Where would you like to go?"  The driver quietly asked.

"Just drive for now."  The unguarded exhaustion in her voice was unsettling but she did nothing to correct it.

Once Sonya had left the building, Dr. Barrow smiled at his petty slight regarding payment, before moving to his desk and taking out a tape recorder. He made sure a fresh cassette was in the machine before hitting record, and placing the small microphone next to his lips.

"Patient is suffering from some form of repression, forcing her unpleasant experiences into the pre-conscious and unconscious minds. Images were discovered during hypnosis. Trigger involved child and paintings. In next session, the therapist will potentially use art therapy techniques to help bring conflict from unconscious to the conscious. The therapist will also explore relationship with figure, D., who seems to have at least some sway with patient. Overall prognosis, too soon to tell."

He stopped recording and placed the recorder back in his desk. About that time another patient buzzed. He called them back, and the cycle repeated itself.

~~

One week later - same day, same time - Dr. Barrow sat in the same place as the weak before. The pocket watch and metronome were with him. He buzzed Sonya back, a neutral expression on his face. The suit was light blue today.

Surrounded by what had grown to be nine portraits of Nadia, Sonya worked on the tenth at a feverish pace.  This was to be the final painting, though she wouldn't know until it was complete.  Nadia looked away and over her shoulder, an expression of indignation.  Unlike the other hyper-realistic portraits, this one was a dark impressionist piece.  It was begun after she arrived home from the first session with Dr. Barrow, and Sonya worked through the day to its completion.  It took the whole week to dry completely, and it remained on its easel in the great room until she could think of a place to hang it.

She took the other portraits to the basement, storing them beside the painting of Alessandro.

The huge black canvas had a minor addition; the hint of a silhouetted pair of figures atop one of the cliff-like abstractions in black.  Sonya spent many hours in front of the piece, feeling on the precipice of something that she would be better off turning away from.

Damien had called once part-way through the week to check in, aware of her appointment and undoubtedly curious to see how it had gone.  Sonya gave no details, though she confirmed that she had scheduled another.  This seemed to please him, and she felt a wave of comfort in knowing this--followed by shame for feeling such intense relief.  The fact that she needed someone's approval clashed with the inner-strength that she knew she possessed.

She needed no one.
But she couldn't lose Damien.

The evening of her appointment filled her chest with unfamiliar anxiety followed again by a chaser of shame.  It was a pattern she was numb to, though it didn't make the sensation any easier to swallow.  Where was the infamous Queen of Ice with her effortless ambivalence?  Left behind in the ocean, maybe.

She spent the silent car ride looking out the window, playing absentmindedly with a button on the cuff of her flowy white blouse.  Upon her arrival at the office, the driver opened the door for her and she was a blur of neat denim and white entering the building.  None would recognize her, but she moved as if she worried she could be.  Once inside, she shifted her black clutch from one hand to the other, fixed the strap of one of her gold flats, lightly tousled her hair and approached the front desk to give her name.

If there was one thing she liked about this situation it was the fact that she never had to wait long to be let in.

When Sonya entered with the same guarded expression she first eyed the metronome, wondering if they would pick up directly where they left off.

"Dr. Barrow."  She said simply with a nod, skipping the formality of a handshake since they were acquainted now.  Settling into the same seat she had taken the last time, she folded her hands around the black clutch in her lap.  Her posture was tense, though less so than the first session.

Dr. Barrow smiled professionally at Sonya as she entered, waiting for her to take her seat before addressing her. He wondered what she'd taken away from their first session and part of him was surprised to see her at all. The abrupt end to their first session and her general reservations about treatment - doing it at a friend's behest foe example - had filled him with doubt.

"Welcome back," he said politely, hands fidgeting slightly with the pocket watch. "Tell me, how have you been since I last saw you."

It was a fairly standard way to start. The here and now always led back to the past.

"The same."  Sonya watched the pocket watch in his hand, her mind on the black canvas at home.

"I've finished the portrait."  she offered additionally, not wanting to actually talk about that but feeling as though she needed to say something else.  Her eyes shifted to the floor and her grip on her clutch tightened.

Ask her about the style, a voice whispered into James's ear. It was exciting for the voices to be interjecting so early. What did they want him to find? He didn't have long to think about this because Sonya's answer was as brief as possible. There was a pause, James waiting to see if Sonya had anything to add, but once he determined she'd finished he smiled and nodded politely.

"Congratulations, tell me about it," he instructed, not quite asking the question the way the voices instructed. He wondered if she'd mention that sort of detail on her own, or if he would need to go hunting. Either was fine as long as he got his answer.

There was a barely perceptible flinch at the congratulation, feeling that it trod perilously close to condescension.  Consciously, of course, she knew it wasn't the intention and quieted the impulse to take it that way.

Talk about it?  She couldn't fathom how.  It seemed frivolous to describe it, art was meant to be seen.  Unless he meant for her to talk about the process.  Sonya wasn't about to admit to the nine other versions and how she toiled over the course of the month attempting to replicate what she envisioned in her mind's eye.  No, that would paint her as an obsessive.

Instead of verbally replying, she leveled a steady gaze at the other vampire and mentally passed the image of the finished painting on the easel to him.  Her advanced skill made this ability effortless like passing him a piece of paper, her mental touch like silk.  Of course, he could recoil, take offense to the fact that she hadn't asked first and perceive it as an invasion or pushing boundaries.  That would be interesting.  She couldn't decide if she cared.

He did bristle at the unasked mental touching, face forming a small frown before returning to his more neutral expression. She would've thrown him out of her mind with force if he'd done that to her, and it brought up a quick memory of his sire. Ancients were always so intrusive. It wasn't his session though, and while she might've plucked a nerve he'd had far worse in the chair. He looked at the image, and tried searching his own limited knowledge of visual art. He couldn't think of the style or era, and so focused on the colors and themes as he could see them. It was dark somehow, and conceptual in a way that reeked of distortion. The quality of the painting was excellent to Barrow's eyes, but he felt great sadness as he looked at it. He wondered who's sadness he was feeling.

"What was your mood like as you worked on it," he said, holding back his other observations.
