Enchanted

The small bell above the door tinkled when Bianca let herself into her shop and flicked on the lights, bathing her in a soft white glow. She had a new painting to display, wrapped in brown paper and string, carried under her arm. It was smaller in size than most of the pieces in her modestly sized gallery but she believed it was the most interesting. She flicked the lock of the door behind her, not wanting any early punters to destroy her early evening routine.

The hours on the glass window of the door showed that she opened late morning (11am) to mid-afternoon (2pm) and then again at 6pm and staying open until 'Late'. Most of the time she would stay until midnight, working in the small back room of her studio because rarely would she paint pieces to put into her gallery elsewhere. Sometimes she would remain open until the wee hours of the morning if she had a potential sale on her hands. A few times she'd left around ten, bored with staying around when there were few visitors and she wasn't feeling creative - or had something (or someone) else to do.

This time she'd painted something at home that she wanted to share rather than to keep on the already-full walls of her apartment. It was cuter than the rest of the artwork inside her shop, but there were dark elements to it too, if studied for long enough or if the viewer had a good eye.

She hummed as she placed her rectangular parcel on the desk she used to write out invoices and removed her white duffel coat and hung it on the hook on the wall behind her workspace. Beneath the coat she wore a sea-green top where the fabric was so light it was semi-transparent and she had no bra beneath. Long, tight fitting light blue jeans hugged her slender hips and backside, ending at her strappy wedges. The weather outside had been warm but the wind was brisk and cool, so she'd taken her coat (plus it looked glamorous on her).

Her hair was up in a messy bun today, curls threatening to escape even as she unwrapped her painting and discarded the string and paper. With it now in her hands, she studied it again.

Rabbits surrounded a large black hole (such as in space, for even though it was in the ground surrounded by grass and daisies, there were also galaxies dripping into it). Most of them were hopping into it, but one of them looked appalled and was recoiling. Bianca was pleased to have captured a detail of terror in its eye. Watership Down had nothing on her talent. This particular bunny was about to be pushed into the warren that was really a black hole, by its idiot friend who thought to be performing a favour. There was a message in there; ignorant friends can suck you into places you don't want to go.

The painting had started off intentionally cute but had worked its way into something with secondary meanings. Like a lot of her paintings, it was often the first glance that gave someone an impression of beauty or enchantment, and it was the second glance that offered up darkness and gritty reality.

Bianca set up an easel in the window, getting it just the right height before placing her rabbit artwork onto it. She could sense someone watching as she set up. With calculation, she got her painting just right before turning and smiling at whoever's eye she'd caught, hoping her pretty face would also capture the person who obviously appreciated art if they were gazing into a local gallery's front window.

She saw a woman. But not just any woman. An intensely interesting looking one. The kind that only came out at night. Bianca's smiled twitched ever so slightly wider and she turned a little more fully. If this woman wanted to come in, she would unlock the door for her.

Felicia loved this city. A high vampire population meant everything was open late; ripe for the picking.

And she desperately hoped the slim young thing in the window of the cute corner gallery was just such a fruiting blossom. She was at least distracting enough to put a hold on a night of shopping, if nothing else. Not that she'd had a chance to begin, as no bags hung from her fingers. Her eyes shifted from the painting as the young woman noticed her, and the smile was returned in kind. Felicia made no attempt to keep the mischief from her expression.

Tucked into tailored black pants, she wore a loose silk blouse in a black-and-white print that came up high on her neck with a gentle flounce, tied with a loose bow at the front of her throat. Thick silver cuffs shone at both wrists, matching the heavy silver earrings she wore against her loose brown hair.

As if reading the other woman's thoughts (though she wasn't, at the moment), Felicia's gaze moved purposefully to the door, lips pouted gently, asking for entrance with hooded eyes.

With her smile firmly in place and her eyes locked on the lady at her window, Bianca walked deliberately to the door, her gaze only moving when her fingers failed to find the lock. She didn't want to be fussing with the door while making eyes at her visitor so sacrificed eye-contact so she could flick the latch and open the door.

The warm night had coolled considerably in the fifteen minutes it had taken her to set up - not that she'd been a good judge of it anyway, wrapped in her warm coat as she'd been. Without it, when a gust of chill wind hit her, it moved through her blouse as if she wore nothing and immediately watered her eyes so they shone. A shiver threatened to rack her body but she fought it enough only to wriggle her shoulders - though she couldn't stop her flesh from forming goosebumps or her nipples from hardening with the cold. Small nubs appeared beneath her top and she resisted the urge to fold her arms across her chest and hide them (or to use the manoeuvre as a method of 'staying warm').

Her glistening stare regarded the woman entering her shop with interest. She wouldn't feel the cold.

"Good evening," Bianca bade, closing the door against the wind and flicking the lock again. She didn't want an interruption.

“And to you.” Felicia’s smile couldn’t help but widen as she took in her new host, frankly savoring ever soft and slender inch of her with her gaze. She reached out and touched the edge of Bianca’s mind, gathering surface thoughts. What she found there drew a chuckle. The girl was Aware; even better.

She certainly didn’t feel the cold, and hadn’t in quite some time.

“Where ever is your coat, my dear? You’ll catch a chill.”

"You and my mother," Bianca replied to the concern aimed her way, her tone gently scornful. The words could've been interpreted as a vocal eye-rolling, but Bianca's relationship with her mother was good so her expression was warm, for she'd liked the thoughtfulness behind the words. "But now the cold is locked out, along with everyone else."

The usual words sprang to her tongue, demanding to be spoken;

Is there anything I could help you find?
What kind of art do you have a preference for?

She didn't want to say those everyday, mundane, sales-girl things, so she let the last sentence remain in the air. The sentence had sounded almost poetic. Let that be the last thing said from her, then.

"Or maybe you've locked the cold in here with you."

Felicia stepped closer, nearing invasive. This close, the vampire could feel the other woman's heat like a torch; like a sun that hadn't kissed her alabaster skin in a millenium. Bianca smelled of apple blossoms and cardamom.

Slender Aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl Felicia sent the words into Bianca's mind with the hazy image of a ripe pomegranate split tenderly between two thumbs, juice running red and sweet over knuckles. She looked up at Bianca through her long eyelashes.

"Will you help warm her?"

The comment was enough for her to puff a brief laugh of admiration. While Bianca believed this woman was the polar opposite of cold, she was also charismatic enough and the words magnificent enough that the painter didn't want to mess with what had been said. Words were an artform just as much as colour, and she let them hang in the air so she could enjoy them.

When the proposition came next, Bianca's eyes widened and she blushed at the idea. Quite suddenly the stranger was too much to take in and so she looked away, her gaze falling on one of her displayed paintings on the wall. Swirls of midnight blues and blood reds implying a nebula, but was truly an implication of what they were discussing. How fitting that she should be looking at it now.

She should say no. She should politely refuse in order to keep her dignity. She should decline to meet society's values of 'getting to know one another' before sharing intimate moments.

None of those things were what she wanted. She didn't want the shoulds. Fuck the shoulds.

She found the woman's gaze again, fixed on her. Bianca's heart sped at what she read there. She thought she saw desire alongside a calculated stare. Bianca tipped her chin up slightly, acknowledging that yes, she consented. The words stuck in her throat so that only a tiny murmur escaped.

"Hm," she voiced, then took the woman's hand, linking fingers if she was allowed. She meant to escort her to the back room, into her most private sanctuary - her studio, where she had a half-finished work in progress. In there, along with a stool that she sometimes sat on to paint (while most other times she stood), was a cosy two-person black Le Corbusier sofa. The cushions were a bit firm, but it was the right height for her to sit on and regard her work for inspiration.

Radiating pleasure, Felicia allowed herself to be lead by the hand. Bianca would find her skin no warmer than room temperature, the pressure of their palms pressed together providing more sensation. Her gaze had stayed focused on the Human even when she looked away. Felicia liked that she had considered her options before agreeing.  A sycophant had their place, but the vampire usually hoped for more.

In the next room, she spared a glance for the partially-finished art before settling herself on the couch. The girl had talent, and ambition, to own her own gallery on such hotly-contested real estate.  She spread her legs and urged Bianca to stand between them, and then to sit down in her lap if she allowed, tugging gently but insistently on their linked hands.

Bianca watched Felicia closely when she looked at her work in progress, only slightly disappointed when it didn't attract a lingering look of interest, but then, it was because she, Bianca, had captured Felicia's attention soundly. That wasn't a terrible thing.

Away from the growling murmur of traffic, Bianca could hear the swishing of their clothes as they walked, the creak of the leather as Felicia sat on the sofa, the beat of her heart hammering in her chest. She felt flushed, excitement and anticipation warming her skin. The gentle pull was obvious and brief; Bianca turned and sat in one fluid motion, the hand not holding Felicia's moved lithely around Felicia's shoulders and she rested her wrist upon the opposite shoulder, hand dangling. She would no doubt be gripping Felicia soon enough, but there was no need to be invasive at this point.

"I consent to the bite," she whispered, for this was her practice when with a vampire. She'd been to Venture a few times, liking it much better than Risk. She felt safer there than at the other, though safety and caution was what she threw to the wind every time she allowed one of these beings close to her. They were superior - she was fragile in their hands.

She didn't consent to other things, even though she felt a strong desire towards this woman, whose name she didn't yet know. She'd never felt this level of attraction before but she didn't want to lose herself over it. Her body trembled, even as she turned her head and rested it upon the woman's shoulder, baring her smooth neck so that all Felicia had to do was hold her and bite.

The Venture script teased a flash of teeth from the vampire. She could wait. She had nothing but time.

Draped across her lap, body thrumming with a hummingbird's energy and fragility, Bianca was a Botticellian angel. To complete the look, Felicia cradled the girl's shoulders with her free arm, teasing bobby pins out of her curls with a practiced, gentle deftness until her hair fell out of its bun. Perfect. Resting her hand then on Bianca's shoulder, supporting but not constrictive, Felicia took a long moment to take the girl in. Something about her made her feel young.

All at once, the grip on Bianca's shoulder tightened and felicia buried her face in the crook of her smooth neck, breathing in deeply, filling dead lungs with the scent of her. Cool-lipped kisses prepared the human's skin for the bite enough that the fangs sliding into her jugular vein were merely a pinprick; an afterthought.

Bianca double-gasped, a short pull in and then slightly longer before she parted her lips further for a breathy sigh. Her eyelids fluttered closed at the attention on her neck and she could feel an awakening between her legs. She wanted to touch herself but held back, her hand already gripping Felicia's shoulder before her teeth entered and the drinking began.

Exotic, erotic, effervescent and sublime, it was foreplay for her and her hand twitched for more upon herself... but it slid around Felicia's cool torso instead. She remembered her words; that she consented to just the bite. Her cheeks flushed with want and regret, her willpower tested. She would not change her mind - though the needy part of her started making justifications about the shackles of social convention. She wanted to say 'more, please' like the polar opposite of Oliver Twist. She wanted Felicia to have a second feast.

The whole time, as Felicia drank from her, Bianca remained resolute while internally she screamed for consummation.

Bianca tasted of rosewater and sugar syrup, hot and thick as fresh cream splashing across Felicia’s tongue. A low sound escaped the vampire’s throat as the scent of the human’s arousal reached her nose, nostrils flaring to breathe her in and taste her at once.

Wanting to be fully subsumed, Felicia touched Bianca’s mind; a soft, writhing thing of need, need, need. She growled, ribs pressing against Bianca’s fingers through the softness of her shirt.

She could give this girl the whole world, if only she would ask.

Felicia needed less than a young vampire, and pulled away sooner than Bianca was likely used to. She sealed over the pinprick wounds she’d made with drops of her own blood, pricking her tongue with a fang.  She let her tongue linger, enjoying the other woman’s soft, salt skin.

Into that swirling maelstrom of Bianca’s mind, she sent a brief, flickering image of an irregular pearl balanced on the the tip of her tongue. Ask.

Her willpower tested to almost breaking point, Bianca received the image of the pearl and blushed at it - not that one could tell, her cheeks were already pinked by desire. She felt hot, too hot, and Felicia was her cool relief. Still, she did not ask.

Panting lightly (as heavily as she dared) and resting her head on Felicia's shoulder, she wondered if she'd become a disappointment because of her restraint. She didn't want to throw everything at this woman, this stranger really, before she solved more of her mystery. She spoke with a whisper.

"I want to -

have more
be more

know more," she said, fighting her urge to say what was really on her mind. Bianca lifted her head so she could look into Felicia's eyes; so deep with knowledge that she could float in them all day. "I want you to open my -

legs
eyes

- my mind," she insisted, glad she didn't stumble over the first thought that almost flew out of her mouth.

Full lips lingering on the edge of the young woman's jaw, Felicia showed her the world as she had seen it.

She showed her the palace at Versailles, a-glimmer under crystal and candlelight, redolent with the heavy scents of magnolia and pressed powder.

She showed her a cool night under the stars beside the rushing waters of the Yangtze river, holding a young chinese woman's face in her hands, pulse racing beneath her fingertips.

She showed her the great wall surrounding Roman Londonium; the Gaulic tribes; the great gilded temple at Edfu, and a host of other sights long lost to living memory.

Each time, Bianca would feel as though she were standing where Felicia had stood, down to the breeze on her skin and the absence of her heartbeat. Any other psychic experience she'd had with younger vampires would feel pale and clumsy in comparison to what Felicia gave her, all without taking her lips from placing tiny kisses along the young woman's jaw.

She hadn't expected such a gift. Her artist's gaze roamed hungrily over each landscape, absorbing as much as she could from each scene. They went too fast for her; she could have spent hours looking at just one of them, she didn't need them all. This was like a sneak preview; a teaser for what Felicia could do for her. It was a gift.

"Would you take me to one of those places, or similar, again?" Bianca asked, overwhelmed by the attention to her throat enough to be more straightforward in her conversation. She was usually more diplomatic but she was too lust-filled to think in abstract. "I would love to paint them," she said.

An innocent request.

“I would,” Felicia purred, before leaning back to look into the young woman’s face. The words were heavy with possibility, as real and present as the fingertips on Bianca’s arm. She watched her hungrily, though her cheeks were pink with stolen warmth.

Abruptly, the vampire’s gaze moved to the unfinished piece on the easel. “I would like to purchase this piece when it’s finished,” she said lazily, “I will return in a week to check on its progress.”

Bianca smiled her gratitude and looked at the easel when her attention was drawn to it. The canvas was half paint half sketch, details not yet placed as she waited for the base paint to dry. Other than the background - obviously the start of a forest - it was difficult to know how it would end up. Bianca had started off with one idea and changed her mind as the paint had reminded her of something else. Every time she glanced at it from the corner of her eye she would feelt a strong tug of deja vu, but she couldn't understand why.

She looked back at Felicia as she spoke. "It might surprise you," she said. What she meant was that she hoped it would surprise her, for she loathed to be predictable.

It seemed a timely moment to vacate Felicia's lap.

"I hope it does." Felicia gave voice to the young woman's thoughts without plucking them from her head. She watched Bianca closely as she rose, enjoying the lithe lines of her; so sharp and soft at once. Her hand trailed down her arms ash she stood, fingers finding and clasping hers once she was upright. The vampire took a long moment to stare up at Bianca, face wreathed in the blonde curls she'd loosed from their bindings.

How perfect she would be, loosed from the rest of them.

She rose as well, then, standing in Bianca's space, effortlessly confident despite the differences in their height. "I'll see you soon."

Unless bidden to stay, Felicia would take her leave.

Felicia's hope put a pressure on Bianca to make her unfinished painting the best one possible. She was mutely determined to impress this woman who'd unlocked the world and history for her in just a few seconds. Her lips stretched further, her eyes wide as she tried to drink in Felicia's features in return for what Felicia had taken from her. She burnt Felicia's image into her brain.

She made a soft sound of acknolwedgement, wanting to bid Felicia an appropriate farewell but she was speechless. She both wanted to make Felicia stop while also not brave enough to call out to her. Also, what the hell would she say and do? No. She had to recover, she had to collect herself and she had to be more impressive in a week's time when Felicia returned.

When the bell rang, marking the vampire's exit, Bianca returned to her couch and flopped onto it. Her heart was still racing, her hands shook. It was only when she picked up the paintbrush that they stilled.

Tonight there would be no sales. Tonight there would only be art.
