Moving in, In a Big Way.

|| Bit of Character introduction, Anyone is welcome to Join! ||

Flecks of ash flitted through the air, falling to the ground in lazy swirls. The fleet flickered in strobes, alternating grey and black as drafts batted them across a backdrop of smoldering ember. Predawn pushed colours into the filtered air, lavenders burgeoning into a crest of orange as light strained to stretch over a scene of wreckage and ruin. Few house frames stood as blacked wood; their paint, polish, and luster peeled off by a prior blaze to leave skeletal remnants in wake.

The scent of smolder and crackle sizzled in the atmosphere, creating distorted waves that clung to the ground as they rose. He stood amidst the ruin. The fire that was put to his fields and estate caught too late. The perpetrators nowhere to be found. Here, he knew he would turn to the forest. Here, he knew he would march in a daze to his wife’s freshly dug grave. He knew because he had this dream before, and he knew he would have it again --many more times as he had already throughout the centuries of his survival.

As the thought of survival skimmed the consciousness of his mind, the world around him melted and melded into a heightened awareness. The mattress he slept on proved cool beneath him. His naked body drenched in sweat and tangled in clingy sheets. Seconds passed as narrowed eyes stared into the silence. He could taste the staleness of the motel room; inhaled with the bitterness of last night’s coffee.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been on the road. Or, how many hours spanned before he pulled his ‘84 Chevy into the parking lot. His family and prized possessions sealed and stowed in it’s camper shell. But he knew when his head hit the pillow, it had felt like an eternity since he’d slept.

A low grumble permeated the room, rising up from the back of his throat as he pulled his palm down his face. His body rocked to the side; and his legs swung off the bed to help his feet find the floor. Once upright, he pawed around for the jeans he’d discarded last night; fishing from them a lighter and a half-squished pack of cigarettes.

Meditative movements tapped one free, drab olive eyes focused on the filter as it loosed from its fellows. He tipped forward when the full length surfaced, pinching the end between wan lips to pull it. For a fleeting moment, a flicker of flame joined the light filtered in through the venietans. The latter provided by the glowing neon tubes glaring Detour’s name. Cigarette lit behind a cupped palm, he stood to wander into the bathroom.

His hand passed blind over the wall, fingers in search of the switch. His index caught it once found, flicking up to spill halogen white over a porcelain basin. An ash grey face greeted him in the mirror, hard eyes framed by a peppered crew cut. Tags rattled in tandem to his movements as hitched lumbering pulled him to the sink. Palms braced on either side of the cool surface, he sucked on his cigarette and stared into his unforgiving reflection. He didn’t look half bad, if he considered the night before. With a leer-like grin, he abruptly turned about to take a leak.

As the contents of his bladder hissed into the toilet, he turned his mind to the day ahead. If his internal clock hadn’t been too terribly thrown off, he gauged he was up and moving in the 0400; and, he would lend time to five or --ten after, by now. Somewhere to snag coffee and breakfast was the first order of business, the second --touring the city, perhaps finding a local paper or magazine to look over the classifieds. He didn’t know, exactly, how early the citizens started their day, or what would be available, but a bit of exploration would do him good.

Shaking his bits to lose the last of his urine, he made to zip up his pants --before realizing he was still naked. He could’ve sworn he had --ah, wait, no that’s right he’d not got that far yet. Drawing his hand up to scissor his cigarette, he inhaled to pull the stick’s cherry into the tobacco. Smoke escaped the part in his lips, as his hand turned the stick aside. He supposed dressing would be a good idea

Within the next few minutes, the motel’s occupant stepped out the door dressed in rumpled jeans, and a striped collared long-sleeved shirt. The latter, snapped a few times in the air to get the wrinkles out. Dog tags rested upon a tone-fiting crew-cut, the tee a dull blue  matched to better blend with the palette of stripes. He flicked his keys around his finger as he worked his way to the truck. The middle stuck through the loop of his key chain, while the outer two caught and released the fob in tandem to a ticking wrist.

"Excuse me,"  a tall, lean woman appeared from the dwindling shadows of the early morning.  There was a musical jingling as her hand darted out from her fur-lined coat, a photograph grasped between fingers lined with gold rings.  "Have you seen this woman?"  Her eyes searched his with a hopeful expression, given weight by her downturned lips.

She spent the evening searching the streets for Sierra at Jen's - her mother's - frantic appeal.  No, it mustn't be one of the council - and certainly not Ethan whom Jen disliked.  Jen disliked most of them, with a notable exception.  If it had not been for Jen's miraculous knowledge of how to properly venerate a Sidhe, Vai would have refused such a tedious personal request.  As a rule, she disliked chasing pups, especially those not technically under her charge, a fact that would do no good in explaining to Jen.  Sierra had been running with the Bastards, after all.  If there was one thing the Sidhe-wolf knew, it was that Sierra's disappearance had nothing directly to do with the Bastards.  At the risk of exposing the Bastards to the sniffing noses of the city Ward, she was intent on seeing that she tie up these loose ends.  And Jen had promised her some particularly good wine for any notable information.

The trail led directly to the Central district, to the Brazillian Quarter's dens, where an acquaintance insisted that Sierra had been staying at the Detour Motel for a week now.  And no, he hadn't seen her for the last three days.

She pressed the photograph into the stranger's hand to emphasize her urgency.

|| \o/ Hooray for new characters, and threads to play with! ||

The request, such that it was at the time of day that it was, put him on immediate alert. Not to suggest the woman or her query was a threat to his person; but, because the nature of the question deserved an immediate response. Amber Alerts, Missing Persons --all aligned with a perfunctory alarm that fostered only the utmost urgency.

Spurred by the sense of alarm woven within the woman's hope, the man took pause and drew up short of the worried female. Attentive olive dulled in the leading day’s light searched her face, his own features set in a stern expression of distant concern. His “cop expression”. Or, at least, that’s what the past few interns from the morgues called it. They, just --people he had to work with at one time or another.

“I can’t say that I have,” He offered on slow syllables; he, mentally turning over the few patrons he -had- seen moving into rooms. None quite aligned with the photograph. But he had a niggling sense about a young woman who made her way to a room shortly after he’d pulled in. He didn’t know if it was the impatience of a long day, or fright and unease due to the hour, but she’d been in a damned hurry to get inside.

“Saw a woman yesterday, or much earlier this morning perhaps,” He figured it to be 0500 by now, if not more than a quarter after, “But, it was as I was pulling in, so I didn’t get a good look at her.” After a beat, “You need help searching, ma’am?” While a search and rescue hadn’t -initially- been in the cards, some part of him had been trained to respond to the woman’s dilemma. He didn’t know how long the young woman had been missing, or how effective the police force was in this city; but, he was willing to assist. At least, as much as he could.

Visibly perking up at the man's admission that he'd seen someone, her countenance quickly pitched back toward disappointment as he confirmed that he hadn't gotten a good look.  With a grimace, the photo went back into the inner pocket of her coat and she pushed an impatient sigh through her nose.  If only the trail had led to the forest she could try to search under the full moon to catch the pup's scent, but there was no time for that and it was much too risky.

Vai gave this man an assessing look before her gaze darted to the Motel.  Did she desire help?  Yes, if only to get the pup's mother out of her hair.  "That depends," she drawled, eyes narrowing ever so slightly as she glanced back into his eyes.  Was he ignorant?  Could she trust him?  "How familiar are you with this city?"  If he was a newcomer, well, that would be less than desirable but so long as he was in the Know that would be sufficient.  Provided he had something better to offer the search besides two ordinary eyes.

He wished he could’ve been of more service. To serve and protect had been ingrained into him sometime within the last century; and, he certainly empathized. His fob, ticked back and forth through the course of their conversation, stilled to sit against his palm as the photo disappeared.

He met her gaze with an even stare. Ignorance was a --hard word to purport. He came to this particular city because a handful travelers had turned his ear to it. The world was in the know about the supernatural city. Now maybe it started in smaller cities, seemingly forgotten parts of the world until people remembered --Carnies travel to cities too. And with carnies came news.

“Not as familiar as I’d like.” He admitted, the syllables casual and honest. “But, I only just arrived.” With this, he nodded off toward the Chevy parked just outside the rooms. As his chin lifted, a hint of --mania flashed in his eyes. Now mind you, the man’s mind was --far from diseased. But a dividing line danced there; a soldier who’d seen too many battles and won. Who fought for children who lost their lives the very next day. All part of him, part of his past, from the first day he picked up blade.

Vai missed the mania, her eyes following his indication toward the vehicle before returning to his face with a skeptical squint.  He was the only lead she had since the trail ran to this Motel, even if he was a touch more ordinary than she found useful.

"Alright," the woman sucked on her teeth and gave another glance toward the motel, "I'll accept your help."  She straightened to her full height and adjusted her coat before looking back to the man.  They could convincingly pose as the girl's parents to get information from the front desk if it wasn't for the fact that he'd already been staying at the Motel.  She had enough charms on her own, but it was easier to be mundane for the sake of anonymity.

She quirked her head to the side.  "What is your name?"  Her gaze was expectant and she crossed her arms over her chest.

Erect from the moment she called his attention to her, he could've had a steel rod for a spinal cord, the battle hardened man dipped his head in a formal greeting, "Achaius. Achaius Dewar, Ma'am."

A fleeting smile found his lips, as though edge couldn't corrupt the companionable brevity that sat in the core of his being. Yes, the situation was serious. But, he wasn't one to be rude no matter how intense things got.

"Did you want to visit the little lady's room?" This asked after a beat, and accompanied by chin just toward the rooms.
