Old Roleplays / Purging Day
« on: February 26, 2020, 12:51:35 PM »
A glass of whiskey in one hand, Chtahzus’aak stood by his desk, spinning the Hollow dagger on its tip like a top.  The echo of approaching footsteps slipped in through his barely-open office door.  He made no move to look up, watching the slowing spin of the dagger as it teetered before clattering noisily against the surface of his desk.  A sigh escaped through his nose and he took a sip of whiskey.

A fire demon pushed their shoulder against the office door, crossed wordlessly to the fireplace and set the file box in their arms beside a stack of near-identical ones.  Purge days were typically more entertaining for him, but since the results of the election, Chtahzus’aak seemed perpetually in a foul mood.

“That’s the last of them,” Fler exhaled and stretched, gaze moving from the fireplace to the desk.

“Good,” came a curt answer.  The fire demon seemed unphased by his tone and gave Zeus a smile instead.

“You coming to the party?”

Zeus shook his head and took another sip before setting the glass gently down beside the dagger.  He wouldn’t be seen in that nameless grungy underground (and unlicensed) bar, but neither would he forbid any of the demons at the compound from having whatever fun they desired.  No matter how he failed to see what was worth celebrating.  Some holiday that escaped his notice, perhaps.

“Alright, well, most of us are clearing out now so…”  Fler trailed off, watching Chtahzus’aak approach the pile of boxes beside the fireplace.

“Go ahead,” he murmured, “I can take care of this myself.”

“You sure you don’t want me to, uh,”  Fler grinned and gestured vaguely at the stack of files.  A fire demon would make quick work of paper but Fler was a dangerous one and there was too much that could go up in flame in this office.

Zeus raised an eyebrow.  “Go,” he urged gently, the semblance of a smile creeping into his face.  "Have fun."

“Alright--”  They cleared their throat and went to the exit.   Before crossing through they turned back, a hand on the door.  “Don’t work all night.”  Without looking back, Zeus waved Fler on and opened the first box.

---

A few hours passed and the fireplace blazed hungrily, casting an enthusiastic glow against the stack of empty file boxes.  Zeus watched the dancing flames, his face unreadable as he tilted his head back and sucked the last drop of amber liquid from the bottle in his fist.  A sluggish smile on his face, he fumbled in his pocket for his cellphone.  Perhaps he would see if his new drinking-companion was free for the evening.

Before he fished it from his pocket, a loud boom sounded from several floors below.  His shoulders dropped and he groaned, shoving the phone back into his pocket.

“Never a moment’s peace,” he murmured, eyeing the empty bottle in his hand before placing it on his desk and heading to the elevators.

There was no doubt in his mind that the disruption came from the bowels of the compound.  It was the new moon -- the sorcerers were busy working on that same project on the thirteenth floor.  If this final attempt resulted in failure, he would have to look elsewhere for--

He knew something was amiss as soon as the elevator doors opened.  There was a noise, something he couldn’t quite recognize, that grew in volume as he approached the door to the circle.  The warmth from the whiskey soured in his stomach as the door flew open before him.

Two bodies were sprawled on the ground, dark lumps in the dim candlelight, but that was not the first of his concerns.  Suspended in the center of the room was a fist-sized tear emitting a groaning sound not unlike an ancient tree bending to a gale.  For a moment the rift appeared stable.  Mending it would require a witch since he was now down to one sorcerer.

Useless imbeciles, he thought bitterly, wondering if he ought to call on Sabrina for assistance.  But then there would inevitably be questions, if not accusations, and he was in no mood for either of those things.

“Can you keep it stable?”  Chtahzus’aak crossed over to the last sorcerer, his eyes tracing slowly over the empty husks of the other two.  Before there was any reply, a low whine pierced the room and the demon-sorcerer paled.  Zeus took a step back from the rift, mouth set firmly in a scowl.  He opened his mouth to speak and the room began to tremble violently.

The fist-sized tear unfolded double, then double again, splitting like a seam across the empty air.  With it came a pull, which was enough to necessitate a wider stance to brace against, but this too doubled in strength.  Fear, then anger coursed hot through his body, but there was no time for calculated action.  The rip cracked the full length of Zeus’ field-of-vision to reveal the incomprehensible darkness of an unknown void, and a howling wind sucked everything into its center.

From above, the handful of demons that remained in the Block felt the tremor like a great earthquake.  Most of the lower-level living quarters had been cleared out, leaving only guards for the Library and the Vault below to witness the aftermath.  Floors ten through thirteen had been swallowed up in the rift, destabilizing the structure above.  The Library and the Vault themselves sank slowly after through the steadily-shrinking tear before it vanished entirely with an ear-splitting crack.  With this terrible noise came the breaking of each blood-sigil that protected the entrance.

Chtahzus’aak was, once again, missing.

He didn't see her look of confusion and concern while he continued to battle against something she could not see or understand.  Should she ask?  Should she attempt to pierce the barrier of his mind to discover what was happening?  That wasn't how she was with him -- another thing she recalled.

But everything was different now.

"Obviously," she muttered under her breath in reply, glaring at his back as he dressed.  Everything would always change, that was the very nature of existence as it unfolded in endless similarities and patterns like a flower blooming with endless petals curling out from the center.  Predictable and unknown all at once.  This tangental objection stayed silent on her still tongue as she wondered if that was the sort of thing they would discuss and debate on in the past.  It seemed likely, but there were no memories to fall back on.

"Are you leaving, then?" she snapped, crushing the cigarette into the ashtray on the bedside table.  "Just like that?"  There was no hiding the hurt in her voice, and she burned with foolishness and anger at once.

"Think quickly,"  cruelty migrated into his expression as shadows crept higher up his form.  He turned his attention to Jake as the shadows curled around his neck.  "Sam's life depends on it."

Laughter rang through the room, its echo remaining after he vanished into darkness and out of the Rabbit.

If there was one thing Zeus wanted nothing more in that very moment it was to roast the little singing...munchkins on a spit over an open flame -- anything to stop the wretched singing and taunts.  He was very grumpy.

When small-Damien handed over his pack -- and dog -- Zeus stared incredulously between the two before looking back to small-Damien.  Didn't he have somewhere further to go?  Wasn't small-Damien supposed to bring him somewhere besides this godforsaken miniature village?  Why couldn't he remember?  Before the demon could open his mouth to ask any of these things, small-Damien left without even so much as a backward glance.

Chtahzus'aak glared down at the growling dog, tempted to viciously growl back -- or at the very least see how far he could kick it.  Instead, he glared at his surroundings and slung the discarded pack over his shoulder.  With a sigh, he turned to the golden road.

"Are you coming with me, then?" he murmured through the corner of his mouth to the dog, trying his best to not feel ridiculous speaking with a creature that would not speak back and hoping no one would catch him doing it.  With that he began to walk down the pathway, wary of what he would find along the way.

He flinched at the brush against his mind, glaring through the unsettling threat.  Should anyone attempt to search his thoughts he would plunge them into shadow.  But for all of Damien's mental posturing, it made his soul all the more Tantilizing of a Prize.  Perhaps he would keep it cor himself after all.

Va'tamal was not here to argue.  He would not bother explaining that keeping his word had nothing to do with exchange rates and everything to do with his ability to adhere to an agreement made in good faith.  They were operating on entirely different playing fields.  It mattered little.

"I will give you time to think on it," shadows began to collect slowly around his hooves.  "I am sure you will not want to disappoint her."  The smile returned to his lips, but his eyes were sharp and attentive.

A look of impatience replaced the grin.  Va'tamal was no coward -- but the use of the word told him that Damien was afraid.

"No," the demon took a step toward the table, "If I brought her, she would distract you."  His eyes narrowed.  "She was and has been currency in my trade."  He splayed a hand on the surface of the table, pointing with the other.

"You forget that it was you who stole her from me,"  his wings unfurled slowly, as if responding to the conviction in his tone, "Now her value to you has increased, and I am willing to part with her in a fair exchange."

"Because I am a man of my word," a smirk danced across Va'tamal's lips.

The mask of Rachel gave one long anguished stare at Damien while disgracefully discarded on the floor.  At Jake's words, the mask fell away, human skin slipping still as Jake spoke his question until the demon himself remained -- towering grey flesh as he stood.

Va'tamal addressed only Damien, voice darker and deeper.

"You have nothing of interest to offer me beyond that soul," one long finger pointed at the vampire's chest, and he stared unblinking at him.

Still wearing Rachel's face, he allowed the fear caused by the vampiress wash over him, twisting it into his face to enhance his act.  The whimpering, painful gasps for breath and terror in the mask were meant only for Damien.  Va'tamal would have thanked Lisa-Joe for the inspiration -- it got him what he wanted anyway.  The Great Guillaume's slip of composure.

Tears rolled down the cheeks of his mask while he waited for the intervention to take effect.

Va'tamal would not be taking no for an answer.  His human skin rippled and morphed beneath the brown coat that kept the glowing gem obscured from sight.  His form took one that would be familiar, though the change did not alter the eyes.  Black was similar enough to brown.  Posture shifted into something more demure.

"Guillaume," the demon wearing Rachel's face spoke softly with a chilling rendition of her voice.  The expression on her face scared, tone a pleading whisper.  "Please."

"Your soul,"  The smile dropped and his posture straightened.  "Willingly given in exchange for the love of your life,"  His voice held a mocking tone and he couldn't help but smile.

"Unharmed," he added, "So long as the exchange goes smoothly."

"Yes, a trade,"  Va'tamal's eyebrows rose.  "I have something you want, you have something I want."

There was no outward reaction to the usage of his true name.

"I would like to propose a trade."  He stated simply, smile remaining on his face as he mirrored Damien's body language.  The elder vampire's composure was admirable, but Va'tamal expected that would change soon.

Laurent did not bother acknowledging Jake's exit line, an amused expression on his face as he watched the vampire storm out of the conference room.  He did wonder who the other shadow demon was, knowing of only one who would be so confrontational.  The thought widened his smile, despite the Burned Bridge there.

Shadow demon hearing, along with the other senses, was superb.  He knew there were others approaching the door, heard the commands given, and waited patiently as he smoked.  When this Lisa-Joe entered, his eyes roved her form without an ounce of shame.  Her warning nearly had him laughing out loud, but he decided to play along.

Unblinking eyes fixed steadily on her face, glancing her body over occasionally as he pleased.  His mind filled with Delicious imagery of what he would like to do to her, imagining the feeling of his hand gripping her throat, yanking that sweet little pony tail as he fucked her.  She would be a fun one to break, full of piss and vinegar.

Now he was getting distracted, the ash long on the tip of his cigarette.  He flicked it across the table in her direction, but with only enough force to land in the center, a thin trail of smoke drifting toward the ceiling.  When the door opened, he looked up with a smug smile plastered across his face.

"Do you have another option I am unaware of?"  Laurent laughed, then sighed.  His gaze lifted from the phone to Jake, who seemed to quench a bit of his ire.  There was a pause on the other end and Laurent grinned.

"I didn't think so."  His hand darted into his coat for another cigarette.  "Hurry, sweet Guillaume."  Leaning forward, he pressed his finger against the screen of the phone to hang up the call.  Satisfied, he put his feet up on the table and crossed them.
