Storm averted her gaze, eyes becoming a deeper shade of grey.

What am I... she wondered silently to herself, turning away from the boy.
A demon? An akari? She didn\'t know. Her spirit form was...not like others. She hated it, it controled her. She didn\'t want to think about it. She turned back to the boy, glancing over him briefly.

"I am just a girl." she replied simply, smiling sadly. How could she answer such a question when she didn\'t even know the answer herself?

She could feel herself growing weaker as the night drew on.

Storm\'s back was pressed up against the wood of the structure, delicate face hidden benieth her hood. Her dull grey eyes flickered in the fading sunlight, wind teasing the hem of her cloak.

Night had nearly swallowed the entirety of the light house. Storm hated it. As the sun sank lower she could feel her own exhaustion settle upon her like a blanket of lead. She couldn\'t remember the last time she had eaten; this sudden realization seemed to double the exhaustion.

For now she would remain hidden at the base of this old lighthouse, waiting for morning. She closed her sad eyes, leaning the back of her head against the woodwork. She exhaled slowly.

"...Friends?"  Storm echoed, confused almost, brown eyes reflecting this. She stared at his outstretched arms, not prepared to hug anyone that naked. Not that she was prepared to hug anyone at all at his point. She was very taken aback at the innocence of this boy, if not drawn to him. It was such a stark contrast with what she was accustomed too; hatred, darkness. She shuddered involuntarily.

I don\'t even know what he is... she thought to herself, unsure of how to behave. Why would anyone want to be friends with her? Let alone, someone she had barely just met. She was worthless.

"What exactly are you? I\'ve never seen someone...well...I\'ve never even seen a unicorn before..." she trailed off, hating the sound of her own voice out loud. It was a stupid question, she was talking to an illusion for all she knew. Gods, she had been tired before but this was ridiculous.

Storm jumped at the sudden transformation, eyes flashing randomly once again to mirror her fear and confusion. Her mind was screaming caution, but the strange behavior of the boy standing before caused her to relax. He was childish; his personality seemed at least five years behind his age. The fact that he was completely unclothed did not hit her until he began to speak.

“Journey…?” She breathed, flushing crimson, eyes to match her embarrassment.

“Um…you want my cloak…?” she hesitantly began to take off her pitch black cloak, as though exhuming extreme caution with it, as though it meant the world to her. She held it out gingerly, hoping the strange boy would take it and cover himself.

Her mind was whirling. What was this rainbow-haired guy? One minute ago he was a playful unicorn and the next… she couldn’t believe that she was actually awake, but of course her dreams were never anything this…cheery.

And cheery he was indeed, Storm could feel it. His emotions leaked onto her like an overflowing cup. She couldn\'t help but smirk, eyes giving way to a little happy blue.

Storm stared, perplexed, at the creature.
"You must be real then...considering I know I\'m not sleeping and I rarely hallucinate..." she spoke aloud, softly, tenderly and maybe even hesitantly. Her eyes were an uneasy red as the studied the unicorn.

What do you want? she thought absently. She never had any sort of creature approach her with such boldness, let alone something that was as rumored to be a prideful, vain, untamable unicorn. Her fingers ached to stroke its majestic mane, but she withheld herself. In the back of her mind she wondered if it could talk, she smirked.

Storm leapt up awkwardly, jumping back from the new presence. Her eyes flashed randomly, shock and fear plainly written on her face. She scolded herself inwardly for not being able to sense the aura of the creature approaching, and again for being so startled.

A unicorn? She wondered, eyes settling on a curious brown color, bits of red flowing in to show her uneasiness. She inhaled deeply, trying to relax herself. She resisted the childish urge to reach out and pet the unicorn on the head.

No...I must be tired. Very, very tired. She shook her head, as though trying to rid her mind of the strange and random hallucination. Storm turned from the creature, cradling her forehead in the palm of her hand. Maybe walking around would clear her head.

Old Roleplays / Another Sleepless Night

It was dusk, the sun barely making its lazy way onto the other side of the earth. Sunsets on nights like this were never spectacular to Storm; all it meant was that night was approaching, and with night, various other unpleasentries that accompanied it. Sunrises seemed far more glorious to her, ushering on a new day, lacking dreams and certainly lacking nightmares as well.

The Akari girl sighed deeply, taking in ever detail of the vibrant reds and oranges. Her eyes held a sad gray color, tinged with the slightest bit of brown, for her mind was on anything but rest. She hadn\'t slept for a few days now; a great accomplishment if you were to ask her. This had caused her quite a problem however, leaving her in a weak unprotected state. She was confident that she could survive out here in the wilderness. After all, what had she seen for the past few days save a small group of deer, rabbits here and there and the occasional flock of geese?

I can\'t sleep...not tonight... She thought quietly, as though encouraging herself to stay awake. She sat with her back against an old, gnarled oak; hoping the texture of the bark would keep her eyes open until sunrise. The wind came in a strong, angry burst, causing her jet black hair to fly, untamed, into the air. Storm pulled her cloak tighter around her body as the wind died down for the time being, hood hiding her face.

The sun was gone, along with any hope and comfort that she could withstand another sleepless night. She knew deep down that it was impossible for her to stay awake for more than a week, especially surviving on what little food she had managed to find out here. In the back of her mind she wondered if she could find a town nearby, venture out from the seclusion of the forest and maybe find something to eat. Her eyes deepened in the grey shade, traces of brown being overcome by the sorrowful color.

What was she running from in the first place?

History in Brief:

Rachel lived and worked originally in Massachusetts.  She lived in an apartment in the city with her best friend Quinn.  One day, a charming and handsome guy came into the restaurant where she worked.  The two had a pleasant conversation, he indicated that she was an excellent server and said that she could make even better money working for him--and asked if she would like to meet sometime for more information while she wasn't working.  She had agreed, was given an address to meet him, and he left the restaurant.  Later that week she dressed in the best clothes she had, assuming that it would lead to an interview, and went to the address he had given her.  The address was to a complex that was under construction, out of sight of busier parts of the city, and before Rachel realized that something was up there was a hand around her mouth and she was being dragged into the back of a van.  She has no memory of the long car ride that led her to just outside of this city.

She spent about five months in Laurent's sex trafficking ring, enduring unspeakable things that no one should ever have to go through.  The demon personally tortured her and "broke her in"--shaping her into the perfect "girl" who was eventually highly sought after amongst his clients.

During a police raid of the operations, she managed to escape, thankfully running straight into Damien and Pierre.  Damien took her in under his protection, as Laurent was ever keen on trying to get her back.  She hasn't been out of the house unaccompanied since then.

Recent History:
Over the years of living with Damien, she has been struggling with nightmares and other signs of obvious trauma and he has been the core of her support through recovering.  She has a tendency to mentally compartmentalize and has been working to neatly stuff all the bad shit away so she could move on with her life.  Eventually, Rachel and Damien grew quite close and their friendship fell into a romance.  Things have been blissful--aside from the whole not-being-able-to-go-out-in-daylight issue.  Recently she's reconnected with her best friend Quinn, who had been living in the city the entire time she had been without either of them knowing it.

Miscellaneous / Akari/Zalmric
« on: May 05, 2007, 11:54:42 PM »
History/Mythology
For as far back as either species can recall, there has always been war going on between the Akari and Zalmric. The truth of the origins of this dispute is unsure, the Akari and Zalmric both have told different ‘sides of the story’.

Originally the Akari believe in a collection of Gods/Goddesses, a belief that has steadily died down with the growing age of science. According to Akari mythology, the Zalmric worshiped an evil Goddess who had ‘fallen from heaven’. This evil Goddess demanded blood sacrifices and commanded the Zalmric to destroy the Akari race. It was also told that the Zalmric were once Akari, but had been swayed by this evil Goddess to do wrong and thus lost the ability to transform into their spirit forms. When the Zalmric began to attack the Akari fought back, and the two fought until the war destroyed their land and most of their people. According to the Akari, they were simply trying to protect themselves.

The Zalmric claim that they have nothing to do with this story. While their ancient belief is in one Goddess, there is nothing to prove that She wanted them to kill of the Akari. The Zalmric say they were simply acting in self defense when the Akari began to attack. Even if this was ‘self defense’, the Zalmric were more ruthless in the war, feeling as though they had been ostracized by the Akari for being different for too long. There was a trend on the Zalmric side to attack and destroy entire villages, whereas the Akari did no such thing.

Today, there is no longer any structured fighting. The most recent war obliterated either side’s ability to regroup. Now, any Akari or Zalmric that were alive during the last war (three or four years ago) have a long standing hatred for the other side. While most do not believe in the Gods/Goddesses, it is more of a traditional belief that is still more or less taught (something along the lines of Christianity in America).

Akari

Appearance
Akari breed the same way humans do, and there is no way that a human (or any other species) can become an Akari. Their bodies are subject to the same stress and effects to that of human bodies. They share the same physical appearance as humans at birth, having the same degree of diversity. Their bodies are so similar to humans, in fact, that if a vampire or werewolf were to attempt to change an Akari, they could (but they would no longer have a spirit form, causing them to essentially be a human). The only thing that separates them from humans is their ability to transform into their ‘spirit form’.

A spirit form is, in essence, the soul of the individual in a physical form. This is completely dependant on the personality of the Akari and can be anything from an animal to any other type of creature imaginable. Since there are an infinite variety of souls, there are also infinite varieties of spirit forms. Duplicates are rare, even in identical twin cases.
Usually, the Akari have a \'breakthrough\' in their adolescent to early teen years where their spirit form is forced out when the individual experiences very strong emotion, or is put under massive emotional or physical strain. Without this ‘breakthrough’ the Akari could go a large portion of their life without knowing ‘who they are’. Usually this ‘breakthrough’ occurs around puberty, and it is extremely rare for any one Akari to miss this ‘transformation period’.

Once they \'discover\' this new form, they have a choice to either stay in that particular physical state for the majority of their lives or remain in their \'human form\'. Most choose to stay in their normal human form because when they are in their spirit form, their emotions are expressed uncontrollably, almost as though nothing can hold them back (as you can already assume, this has its drawbacks and its advantages). After practice, however, emotional outbursts can, for the most part, be controlled. Usually the adults have a better handle on this because they are already used to living in their spirit forms.

Rarity Level
Akari are not normally found in this area. However they were the dominant species in some distant land that was destroyed, leaving them displaced and forced into a more nomadic lifestyle.

Lifespan
Akari age as humans do.

Strengths
Both mental and physical strengths vary with the individual, but most have some small ability to perform telepathic tasks such as mental telepathy or otherwise. Historically, mental telepathy etc, was the main means for the Akari to fight in a war situation.

Weaknesses/Limitations
Since Akari are mortal, they die by the same means as humans. They have their own individual weaknesses for the most part, being individuals. There has been a trend, in the past, for the Akari to be more physically weak then mentally. But overall, they are not set to one specific weakness.

Typical Behavior
As aforementioned, Akari are as diverse as the human species. Nothing in their actions or behavior, other than transforming into their spirit form, would lend them to being ‘found out’.

Sub-Species
Akari have one sub-species, the Zalmric.

Zalmric

Appearance
Zalmric are born with no pupils, their eyes are one solid color. But other then this detail, the Zalmric for the most part look like Akari at birth. Typically, the Zalmric do not inbreed (with the Akari) and two Zalmric are needed to produce another. An Akari-Zalmric child would be born as either an Akari or a Zalmric, depending on the mother (i.e., the Zalmric mother would birth a Zalmric child). Usually this doesn’t happen, considering the hatred that is imbedded into their culture.

Zalmric have no ‘spirit form’. They instead are shape shifters and can change into anything. However, their bodies give them only so much ‘material’ to work with, and they cannot transform into something super-huge and super-powerful. If they were to transform into something very large, mobility and prowess would be extremely crippled, so usually they don’t. This transformation ability is limited, however. They cannot change the shape or color of their eyes, meaning they will consistently have the same solid color for an eye, even if they choose to transform into a tree.

In general, the Zalmric to not share the same exactness to humans as the Akari do (i.e. they could not be transformed into a vampire or werewolf because their shape-shifting ability makes them too complex).

Rarity Level and Lifespan
Both characteristics are the same as the Akari species.

Strengths
The mental and physical strengths of the Zalmric do not differ much from the Akari. However, the majority have a tendency to become more physically strong than mentally. Historically the Zalmric were more physically strong then mentally and most keep up with this trend.

Weaknesses/Limitations
The weaknesses/limitations depend entirely on the individual, just as the Akari. But one particular weakness they share. The Zalmric cannot go for more than twenty-four hours without changing their shape. They constantly must shift at least 40% of their body, or they will be forced to take the shape of whatever they are currently focused on at the time (whether it is someone they are talking to or an animal they see on the street).

Typical Behavior
Again, they are as diverse as the Akari. Typically, they bear a great hostility toward Akari that has been a feeling carried through history. So it’s rare to see the two together in a friendly situation.
