Malcolm found himself relaxing in the other’s company. The other’s calm politeness put him at ease. Rich didn’t seem to expect anything of him (that he could sense) and nor was he obviously and actively disinterested in Malcolm. The secretary was so used to talking to people that were only listening to him because it was polite that he’d almost forgotten what it was like to take part in a real conversation.

The werewolf’s response to the vampire was lukewarm, by most standards, but his level of congeniality was quite warm by his own standards. As the conversation wound down, he found himself wondering if his new place would have a flower box or something else suitable for growing a plant. Having something to care after would be... nice.

When Rich mentioned he was going to buy the book, Malcolm paused, blinking, and then he grinned. It looked very strange on his face. He seemed younger. “Oh. Okay then.” That was sneaky--showing Malcolm a book, getting him all interested, and then snatching it out from under his nose. He had to admire the art of it, though. “I think I’ll pass this time. This is an interesting book, but not something I’d probably want to own.”

Rich nodded, for he\'d come across books like that in his lifetime - the kind you flipped through but wouldn\'t part with money for.  Smiling back, he moved to the front counter to purchase the City book for a grand total of forty dollars, and had it placed in a white and green striped paper bag with the receipt inside before giving Liesl a warm \'thank you and see you next time\', stepping out onto the street with Malcolm behind.

"It was nice talking with you," Rich declared after he\'d stepped to one side away from the front door, holding his hand out for the shaking.

Malcolm was also careful to wish the lady a pleasant evening, hoping he left an impression that was not as quite as awkward as he’d been when he came inside. He huffed slightly as he stepped outside, taken aback by the wall of warm air he found himself against after the comfort of the bookstore. Maybe he shouldn’t have drunk so much coffee...

He glanced sideways as Rich issued his sentiments and turned to take the hand offered, offering a muted half-smile. “It was nice meeting you,” he said, and his sincerity showed very slightly in his bearing. He didn’t hunch like the world was dragging him down by every possible line and angle of his body.

He’d found a kindred spirit--maybe even a friend. Or, at the very least, some pleasant company.

With a nod and not another word, Malcolm released the hand and turned to go home. He felt good, but he was still tired. Malcolm Grimes was always tired.
