"You exist," he said before he could hold his tongue.  He\'d managed to swallow the last retort though this one came unhindered.  It wasn\'t so much who she was or where she\'d come from, it was the fact she\'d made herself present in his life during a point where he wanted to interact with nobody and just lock himself away from the world.  A dramatic despair, certainly, but the hollowness in his chest felt like a black kind of sickness that needed time to get out.  It wouldn\'t be going anywhere with her around, and so he shared that bitterness and resentment with someone who had no idea why.

The problem with all this was, even though Hew realised it had nothing to do with her, she was the girl he\'d been forced to marry and so he would share his misery with her.  For better or for worse, correct?  She\'d promised, so she could have it.  That was her punishment for going along with this stupid marriage and marrying someone she didn\'t know.  He hadn\'t much of a choice but it was possible that she did.  He couldn\'t care less to know whether or not she actually did, he was too wrapped up in his loneliness.

He fiddled with the clothing that he hadn\'t yet pulled out, the drawer open and his back to her, wasting time.

She was getting better at weathering his acidic remarks - or perhaps it was simply that she\'d accepted his attitude and was braced to move forward to understanding.  Either way, her heart only cringed a little at the words, especially since he still hadn\'t explained himself properly.

"Eet is not ma\' fault that I exist," Roche replied levelly.  "That is an argument you should \'ave with ma\' parents.  But I... I want to know why you are so upset.  Eef you did not want to be married to me, why are you?"  She hoped he would bypass the snappy comments this time and tell her the facts, but the hope was not grand.

Hew turned around and leant against the solidly built drawer, trusting it to hold him up even though he was pushing down on it with his elbows, glaring at the French girl who was supposed to be his wife but was simply a thorn in his side.

Talking to her was not part of the plan so he changed the subject, if only to not comment on what was most painful.

"You better get yourself dressed," he informed her, "you might\'ve been able to loll about in your palace but in this one we have duties."  With that he turned around and focussed now on pulling out his clothes.  Not wanting to fully undress in front of her, he collected his things and took them into the bathroom with him, closing the door and blocking her view.

She pulled a sour face at his retreating back, grasping onto the anger that welled with a fervour heretofore not embraced.  Anger was far better than hurt, would accomplish more constructive things than simply melting into a puddle of wounded pride, though... he didn\'t give her a lot to work with, admittedly.  Just the annoyance of being accused of \'lolling\' and having come from a palace.  For some reason, the notion that she\'d come from such a haven rankled her more than anything; if she\'d had the right to inhabit a palace, why on God\'s green earth would she sacrifice it to come to his?

Using the crankiness to fuel her, she flipped back the sheet and blanket she\'d formerly had over her and marched into the walk in wardrobe.  She yanked open drawers of her undergarments and slammed them back in place, finding the solid sound of wooden ramming home gave her quite a lot of satisfaction.  Even though it wasn\'t her habit (despite not living in a palace), she managed to get herself dressed (sans corset, today) in a pretty light blue gown that complimented her features perfectly, and was long and flowing (with lace the same as the nightdress she\'d donned the night before upon it, but no gaps through to her assets whatsoever).  Roche owned lots of dresses, but very few pants; she couldn\'t help but wonder what sort of \'duties\' they had today, hoping they wouldn\'t require a different outfit to this one.

By the time she walked back into the bedroom, she was a lot calmer and had schooled her features into not giving away her exasperation.  Honey always gained more flies than vinegar.  "What are the duties we must perform?" she asked him calmly when she found him again, standing with her hands clasped before her demurely.  As she looked at him, it occurred to her to wonder if he even remembered her name from the ceremony; he certainly acted like she was a complete stranger and he wanted to keep it that way.

At the sound of her voice and that grating accent, Hew didn\'t even look her way as he answered, choosing to keep his focus on his cuffs instead.  "Introductions," he told her as simply as he could.

He would be introducing his bride to many important people who hadn\'t been so important as to invite to the ceremony, but should know their future queen at least the next day.  He wasn\'t looking forward to parading Rochelle around on his arm all day but such things had to be done.

Suddenly, his princely duties seemed cheap and meaningless, shallow and inconsequential.  She might be his new doll, but he was his father\'s doll, to present prettily to the noble public so they could ooh and aah and likely comment on how much more adult his new haircut made him.

Hacking away at his hair had been a kind of mourning, in fact, the shedding of the young man Phinn had known and loved, for that person had disappeared along with his lover, leaving behind this new person who Hew didn\'t know and couldn\'t care less about, much less those who were involved in his life.

He looked at her belatedly.  "We\'ll have to school you in proper elocution."

She raised a single, haughty eyebrow and her pretty lips thinned, ever so slightly.  "I \'ave been trained," she insisted calmly, "but I speak three languages fluently and it affects my speech slightly.  Your mother called my accent charming," she pointed out hopefully, wondering if he could be dissuaded from his disapproval of her by being told that someone approved.

He stared at her for a long moment, taking in her expression and mirroring it with one of her own.  If she was going to be icy to him, the easier it was for him to be snide in return.

"My mother is easily charmed," he told her before casting his eyes away and stepping before a looking glass in order to get himself looking neat and appropriate.

Breakfast would likely be a semi-formal event, he remembered something being mentioned about tea in the garden.  Soon they would be collected by a knock on the door informing them that they were to be ready at such a time as to head down to breakfast together, with Rochelle on his arm as expected.

He doubted he would sustain the same artificial smile through breakfast that he\'d managed through his wedding.

"But not Mayhew," she whispered, her shoulders slumping despite her determination to match him comment for comment.  She spoke to herself more than him but her words carried easily in the tense silence of their bedroom - though she didn\'t think she sounded as sad as she felt.

He wouldn\'t tell her why he was so upset about being married to her, so she was no closer to convincing him that it wasn\'t an entirely bad situation.  Really, she was beginning to lose sight of the point of that anyway, despite the fact that she hadn\'t even been at it twenty-four hours.  A brick wall didn\'t crumble beneath a banging fist in one century, let alone one day, but even when it did fall, the brick wall was still a wall, just in a different shape.  Was Mayhew even worth worrying about?

Even as she allowed this thought into her conscious mind, her optomistic side rebelled.  Yes it was worth getting to now him and understand what had gone so terribly wrong in his life, to make him this way; she wasn\'t going to see out sixty or so years of marriage like this, that much was certain.

"No, not Mayhew," he agreed, but quietly instead of snidely.  In the mirror he saw her as she stood, defeated, before moving away from the glass and setting a hand on the doorknob.  He pulled it open to reveal the corridor and his aide, Heidel, making his way along it toward their room.  The fellow brightened at Hew\' appearance and Hew was grateful for a familiar and pleasant face.  The man, thirty years his senior, had a calming and understanding presence about him, much like Hew\'s mother, and he wished that his father the King could\'ve had this attribute in his personality.  "Are you ready?" he asked into the room, not quite looking at the new princess.

She glanced up at him when he agreed with her, something about his tone causing her to consider him differently, but whatever it was, it wasn\'t there when she looked.  He\'d sounded... well... despairing was the word, she supposed, but there was no such strong emotion in his eyes upon considering him.  He was just hard and cold, as usual.

"No.  I need to brush my \'air," she told him quietly, moving over to the dressing table not far from the foot of the bed.  She contemplated putting some makeup on, so that she didn\'t look quite so natural, but she didn\'t want to risk her husband\'s ire; brushing her boisterous curls and taming them into a polite hairstyle would take quite enough time as it was, she was sure.  She watched in the mirror as he rolled his eyes and stepped into the hall to begin talking with someone, emitting a little sigh of her own as he did.

~*~

The new Captain Frederickson ran a finger along the inside of his collar for about the fifth time since he\'d been admitted into the conservatory that morning.  The black ribbon upon his breast seemed to be catching his attention by sitting there demurely, at the periphery of his vision, and he glared down at it every now and then, still unused to sporting the colour.

It wasn\'t right that he had it upon his uniform now; not so swiftly and not like it had happened.  Lam had explained the consequences of her actions to him very succinctly and he was under no illusions as to the fact that she and the prince regent shared equal blame in the situation, but he\'d expressed his greatest disappointment as resting with her, because she should have known better.  As much as he liked Hew and would enjoy training him, he would never choose to follow a subordinate\'s orders when he knew they would contradict what his direct superior\'s wishes were likely to be.  That was just stupid.

He had, in fact, refused to do Lam\'s bidding and force an audience with the prince in order to explain why she was now banned from seeing the boy.  That would be a stupid thing to do, too, because he could tell Hew when the time was right, it wouldn\'t change anything if he forced the issue now.

Now, here he was just a few days later - having been quite busy enough with his own work and trying to sort out the life and dilemmas of his friend, Ryanna - having been called into service as Captain in her stead, and bearing the weight of all responsibility.  It had been a whirlwind for him, and not necessarily a pleasant one.  His first important duty had been security at a royal wedding, which had been distressing despite being in a very secure location and being rather low-key, as palace events went.  Fresh from that trying night, he was required to attend this elite breakfast with other important dignitaries who needed to be introduced to the new royal couple.  There was about forty of them milling about in the sunny room, all circling the central table and filling their plates with the most extravagant breakfast fare that the season would allow and making small talk while they waited.

Freddy wasn\'t very good at small talk.  In fact, Freddy didn\'t think he was very good at anything a Captain of the Guard had to do, for he found the sun beating brightly through the paned glass doors stifling (even though everyone else had chittered endlessly about what a nice turn in weather it was and how it was about time the next moon started to show its true colours) and the company dull.  What he wouldn\'t give to be out on a slushy training ground at the barracks, bellowing at recruits that they should hold their swords at their thighs when they needed to run.

The enormous, blonde man had just managed to wedge himself into a quiet corner of the room - to the right of the entranceway - with a plate filled with sweetmeats and toast, when the new young couple entered (preceded by Hew\'s handler who announced them, Freddy noted).  Applause erupted in the relatively small room and he did his best to join in, thumping on the back of his hand with the other a few times, but it died down soon enough.

Immediately, the boy and girl were surrounded by swarming wellwishers excitedly chattering at them, giving them no chance to get some food first, or even allowing them much breathing room.  From his position behind them, Freddy watched the girl, noting the way she swayed slightly back from the crowd and took the minutest step towards her husband, but spoke animatedly to everyone, smiling politely and responding enthusiastically.  She looked well bred and admirably diplomatic, despite being so damn young (too young to be married in his opinion, but his opinion didn\'t count for much, he knew).  He was impressed.  Hew didn\'t look happy and Freddy could guess why; he allowed his gaze to slide off the royals and fastened it to his plate instead.

It was half an hour later that the pair finally got around to speaking to Captain Frederickson.  By that stage, he\'d finished his food and found a chair to sit in, near his corner.  He was curiously examining the mouldings near the ceiling when he became aware of the presence of people near him - the newlyweds.  He scrambled to his feet, blushing automatically because he\'d been lost in his own thoughts, smiling at the pair.

"Your highnesses!  I\'m sorry!" he exclaimed, bowing to the princess and holding his hand out to be shaken by the prince.  "Please forgive my distraction, I\'d fallen completely into my own thoughts.  Congratulations, both of you, on your marriage," he said, looking at them in turn before focussing on the blonde girl.  "Mademoiselle, I am Captain John Frederickson at your service.  Everybody generally calls me Freddy," he added shyly, kissing her hand when it was offered to him.

Rochelle smiled, curtseying in response to the enormous blonde man, taken by his cheerful smile and humble manner.  She was impressed, since military men were, in her experience, generally cold and always perfectly restrained, due to their belief that they were better than mortal men.  This one seemed different and her response to him was genuinely warm.

"Captain," she greeted, inclining her head as her hand was withdrawn from his surprisingly gentle grasp.  "I am Princess Rochelle Kestrel," she told him formally, then grinning a little wider as a light entered her blue eyes, "but my friends and family generally call me Roche," she confided in her thick accent.  The invitation to address her informally was implied in her expression and a little nod she gave him.

"Well, I do hope you are settling in to our little city, Roche?" he enquired, to be sure.  He was relieved when she grinned and nodded again.

"Ah am, it is a lovely city," she commended.

Hew, who had never minded the stuffy guests and idle chit-chat until Phinn had opened his eyes to how inane it all was, was losing patience with everyone and everything.  He was seeking out the presence of those he knew and liked and could barely manage one guest.  Lord Dagger, whose opinions he didn\'t always agree with but at least the man could be interesting, had spoken with him politely and moved on without saying much of anything at all, much to Hew\'s disappointment.

His expression was getting icier with each passing minute until he spied the new Captain and towed his new bride with him with an excuse to who she\'d been speaking to that was almost rude in its curtness.  As Fredriksen noticed the couple hovering over him Hew watched and waited while the typical conversation was met and then hastened it in the direction he wanted it to travel.

"I don\'t see the former Captain Wilson here," he announced, expecting answers.  Why she\'d not told him of her retirement herself was beyond him for he would\'ve liked a goodbye.  Perhaps she was punishing him for an ill-made decision?  He didn\'t want to think of her being angry at him and he needed to talk with her.

Freddy\'s attention was taken off the delightful princess immediately, his smile fading by degrees as he met Hew\'s gaze steadily.  The look in his blue eyes clearly stated a warning - one that told the young royal he didn\'t think this was the time nor place to broach such things, but he was compelled to answer regardless, for he was slightly baffled by Hew\'s phrasing, as well as the fact that he had a message to give.

"Yes.  Well, you won\'t again, will you?" he asked briskly, dismissing the query because he assumed that the prince would know of his father\'s ban.  "She wanted me to pass on... her congratulations and tell you... uh, she\'s well and hopes... you are and... such," Freddy managed, choking on the words but attempting to convey their true intent silently (to someone he believed would understand his coded message).  His hand described an awkward, rolling gesture in the air between them to aid the delivery of his stilted information.

Lam was, frankly, distraught that she was being blocked at every turn from seeing her former pupil but he wasn\'t going to stand there and bloody well tell the boy that she missed him, would he?  He didn\'t love her that much any more.  The captain\'s eyes nervously sought the king\'s current position in the room - feeling guilty about even talking this way - before he looked back at Hew, obviously hoping that that was enough talk about that.

The very first thing out of Frederickson\'s mouth had Hew frowning darkly at him and he watched with little patience as the new captain stammered out a response that was more fitting from one of Hew\'s nervous advisors, the kind that often had something bad to say and therefore faltered during the saying of it.

"What do you mean, \'I won\'t again\'?" he said, immediately grasping onto the words which bothered him the most. Roche was lost at his side, unimportant and not mattering in the slightest. He didn\'t care what she heard or understood, this matter was between him and the man that used to serve under Captain Wilson.

Freddy blinked, opening his mouth to reply and then slamming it shut.  Again, his gaze looked towards the king, as if answers might be coming from him, but settled quickly back on the prince, now beneath a stern frown.

"Well... the ban, of course," he said cautiously, having a sinking feeling that he really shouldn\'t have said anything at all.

Roche\'s eyebrows lifted slightly at such words and she turned from watching Freddy to watching her husband, wondering what the significance of \'Captain Wilson\' was and if it was something that might help her in her quest to pleasing Mayhew.

This small explanation was all that was needed for Mayhew to understand everything.  The way Frederickson kept looking in the direction of where his father, the King, was likely to be, the phrasing - the ban - the fact his good friend and trainer hadn\'t come to say goodbye to him.

A flush spread into his cheeks, high red spots of anger as he glared at Frederickson, if only because he couldn\'t spit and rage at his father.  His jaw jutted when he grit his teeth together, holding his tongue and concentrating on his breathing so that he could remain calm.  There was a pressing on his chest, much like the time he\'d understood the collapse of his world when being discovered with Phinn by her and some of her guards.

He thought he did quite well under the circumstances but it was plain to see he was upset.  At least it showed by way of anger instead of tears, that would\'ve been just humiliating.  He turned his stony gaze away from Frederickson, if only to spare the man some of his ire, only to find himself turning it onto his new bride instead.

Ugh.
