When she looked up at him and agreed so reluctantly to being put down, he understood the impulses that had been guiding him and acted accordingly; he leaned forward and pressed a little kiss to her forehead, feeling tender about holding her and just as sorry as she seemed, to be letting her go (though she had begun to feel heavy and cause his arms to tingle painfully in the last ten or so minutes).

Once she was on her feet, he told her she could keep the cloak on because he hadn\'t thought hers was very thick and it would be cold and windy in the tunnels, but he did need the candle and lighting equipment out of the cloak\'s pocket.  After some fumbling and much touching of her hand, he managed to retrieve the necessary items and crouched down to get the candle lit.  It took him about five minutes - certainly long enough for his blush at kissing her forehead to die down - but eventually their little space was illuminated with what seemed an intensely bright glow, considering how accustomed to the dark they\'d become.

Freddy put the flint and steel in his pants pocket, holding up the candle and grinning at Ryanna, more comfortable squatted down as he was.  When his hand emerged from his pocket, it held a large key instead.  "This way," he told her needlessly, gesturing towards the tunnel with his head.  It was easier for him to duck walk his way there - his prediction about almost being at the gate had been correct, it was only about ten awkward steps until they came to the very serious-looking barrier of steel.  The key turned easily in the lock and the gate swung outward, towards them, without a sound, proving that the exits were well maintained.

After a bit more gesturing and shuffling from him, Ryanna entered the tunnel beyond the gate and Freddy followed.  The area on the other side was a completely different story to the low, narrow natural entryway they\'d just traversed.  Freddy locked the gate and then straightened gratefully, stretching his back and standing at his full height, even able to lift his hands over his head now.  The tunnel was completely dirt but had been dug with intent - three men would easily be able to walk abreast in here, or a carriage traverse it, but the latter wouldn\'t get anywhere beyond the gate, whereas the former could move in single file out of the cave without too many dramas.  A few tree roots poked through the roughly-square tunnel sides as they moved along the tunnel, evidence of how long these tunnels had been here - though they looked regularly maintained because they were.

"Alright then; let\'s see where we are and where we need to go.  I think we\'ll aim to come out at the guardhouse, don\'t you?" he asked Ryanna jovially, his tone filled with forced cheer because he didn\'t really want to give her a chance to ask why he\'d felt the compulsion to kiss her.  He didn\'t want to know, himself.  He walked briskly along the dry, even ground towards the end of the tunnel, where another crossed its path, creating a four-way crossroads.  Set into the dirt wall on their right was a stone tablet that had a series of curious marks carved into it.  There was a single dot and an arrow pointing to the tunnel directly ahead of them, two dots and an arrow indicating they should turn right, three dots and and arrow indicating left and a dash with an arrow pointing back the way they\'d come.

It likely wouldn\'t take Ryanna long to figure out that they were following the trail marked by two dots and that two dots meant the Guardhouse (and that a dash meant an exit) but Freddy didn\'t elaborate on what any of the rest meant - especially when four dots, a star symbol and a sun symbol appeared at the various intersections they reached.  They walked steadily through the tunnels, the thoroughfares not changing overly much in feature, for they stayed the same width and height, only the root systems appeared to alter.  Sometimes the wind fairly whipped by them, threatening to cut straight through his clothes, other times there were pockets of warmth almost as if there was a fire nearby.

Although Freddy needed to concentrate on the signs at all the tunnel ends that they reached, he didn\'t need to be as quiet as he was in between; he just wasn\'t sure what to say to Ryanna now.  It was easier to simply murmur about what direction to head and hold the candle up so that the two of them could see the path ahead.

The kiss felt scalding hot against her forehead, even if it had just been pressed to the warmth of his neck.  Her mind went completely blank.  Fumbling for the flint and candle was difficult, Ryanna trying at the same time as Freddy to find it, hands bumping.  It was just one big mess.  There were still no thoughts going through her head that she knew of, just a vast empty, listless void concentrating on the warm spot on her forehead.  That warm spot confused her.

Ryanna did not take much note of the gate, hearing no sound and deciding there were regular patrols, there was regular maintenance, and there was a key.  Unless she became a guard, this path would be impossible to explore on her own.  There might not have been patrols down there, Ryanna forcing herself to think on that as she went.  They did not see anyone else once they were through the well tended gate, so perhaps not.  But the gate was still in good, working order, keeping her out.

Since that chain of thoughts reached a quick dead-end, Ryanna focused on the little symbols everywhere.  They had to mark locations, or directions to locations.  Freddy said the guardhouse?  Well, since they kept going the directions correspondent to two dots, she assumed that was the guardhouse, not asking.  Ryanna knew that if she opened her mouth to say anything, what would come out was a question about why he kissed her, not what she intended.  Knowing this, Ryanna kept her mouth sealed along the way.

She\'d had to hold Freddy\'s cloak up a little the whole time she\'d been walking, cloth bunched up in the front where she gripped it with her left hand.  It kept the cloak from dragging (and it would by a while if she let it go) and kept her from tripping.  Ryanna had her klutzy moments, and did not want any of them happening around Freddy.  That would be far too embarrassing.

It was easy enough to dodge around and under and between tree-roots, even with the dress and excessive cloak on.  However, Freddy might have been having some issues ahead of her.  He was much larger than her, which Ryanna always knew, just in these kinds of places (she was mostly remembering the tunnel before the gate) he looked like a giant.  Perhaps it was the candle light accentuating it.  Yes, that had to be it.

"My place is in the Outerkeep, so whatever tunnel-path you decide."  Ryanna had to say something.  The silence was absolutely killing her, and she couldn\'t get the forehead incident out of her mind.  Luckily she\'d managed not to ask about that, just letting it fester in her head some more.  Yeah, that was smart.  Ryanna just did not want to say something, and potentially make them both uncomfortable.  Even if nothing ever happened between them, she needed help getting her damn corset off.  Her neighbor would be asleep at this hour, and grumpy if Ryanna woke her up, so Freddy was the only option.   Ryanna opted not to make them awkward before then.

He looked at her thoughtfully, as if he were calculating a different route in his head, but then gave a shake, looking reluctantly at her.  "Unfortunately, the tunnels all originate in places where people are likely to need to get out of - the couple in teh Outerkeep would be locked from the inside and I don\'t have a key.  At least if we head for the Guardhouse, I\'ll know we can get out once we climb up the ladder," he grinned.

"Sorry.  I don\'t mean to make either of us walk any farther than necessary in the cold - I live in the Outerkeep too.  Are ye\' any warmer with the cloak on?" he asked hopefully, eyeing her off.  She looked rather cute, swamped by the excessive amount of black cloth.

Ryanna smiled too, understanding that the route into the Guardhouse was the safest for their exit.  However, if there were any guards about that saw Freddy and Ryanna coming out of the tunnels....  Wait.  How come she could see the entrance to the tunnels in the Guardhouse when he wouldn\'t let her see the entrance to the tunnels outside Oberon?  That was confusing.  Not really frustrating, since Ryanna knew he could just say \'you shouldn\'t be here at all\' so she held her tongue.  No need to spoil the day.

"Oh no, I\'m fine.  I like walking.  These shoes aren\'t all that bad."  Ryanna looked down at her feet with that statement.  The slippers had a little bit of dirt on them, and did nothing to keep her feet warm, but were not all that uncomfortable. "The cloak helps a lot.  Thanks."

Yes, the cloak was really warm, and nice.  Did she get a cloak like that if she made it into the Guard?  That would be nice.  Ryanna had some extra money at the end of every month, so she might as well buy herself a cloak to make it through winter better.  It would be a good investment, so Ryanna kept a note in her mind to check tomorrow morning to see how much money she did have saved up, and then consider getting a cloak before work.  The shop opened a little later than the other shops in the market, so it wouldn\'t be a problem.

But Freddy lived in Outerkeep too?  Hmmm.  That had Ryanna wondering how far away from her he lived.  It would be interesting to find out, though she did not press the issue aloud.  That would be... odd, and it brought to mind her forehead again, which put her back into silence, to continue walking.  Ryanna tried concentrating on figuring out how to get up a ladder in a skirt.

It wasn\'t much longer than ten minutes later when they came to a set of steel bars set into a wall that was covered with mortar, not just dirt.  Beside it was the usual style of plaque that they\'d been following, but it only had two large dots in it, advertising that they had arrived at their destination.  "I\'ll go up first," he told her with a grin.  "It\'s not that I\'m trying to be ungentlemanly, but I need to unlock that trapdoor and make sure no-one else is about - this ladder leads into a separate room but we don\'t really need to be advertising ourselves, if you know what I mean."

With that, he ascended the ladder.  Stupidly, he wasn\'t entirely sure what he meant so he didn\'t know how she would, but the words came naturally to him and he didn\'t take the time to elaborate.  They came from the place that the kiss had sprung from, so it was best he didn\'t explore too deeply.

The ladder from the tunnels opened into a small room that could barely fit a commander\'s desk in it (well it could, but with no walking space to get around it).  It was situated in the barracks area, just off the armory so that any guards required to file out of the city could grab weapons and head down into the secret tunnel system, so there wasn\'t likely to be too many people about at this hour, but Freddy wanted to make sure.  He might have got unlucky and met a patrol as they walked past, or some restless soul that couldn\'t sleep.

Still, he also couldn\'t take the candle away, so he hovered over the trapdoor area with it while Ryanna climbed, trying not to drip wax on her, watching intently to be sure she could negotiate the rungs while wearing his heavy cloak.

That, and if I went up first, my skirt would be open for advertisement. Ryanna just smiled and nodded when he said he would go up the ladder first, not speaking her mind on the matter.  As soon as he was up, Ryanna leg go of the loose folds of cloth, flipping them back so they went behind her.  That would make this easier.  Then she walked up to the ladder and climbed up it, having a little trouble with foot grip, but she managed none-the-less.  Soon she was up, out, and had the cloak gathered up in the front again.

Silently (or as silently as they could) the two of them went sneakily through the Guardhouse, Freddy in lead in case someone was there.  Ryanna understood that she was not supposed to be in the tunnels, so them running into a guard would advertise that she had been there, and Freddy had breached code.  Not good at all.  So sneak they would.

It was not very difficult.  Ryanna doubted anyone was even up this late, and if they were, they certainly weren\'t wandering around near their path.  Ryanna couldn\'t hear anyone! That was just fine by her.  Soon they were outside of the Guardhouse, back in the cold again.  Again, that was just fine.  The cloak was nice and warm, making it all better.  Well, mostly better.  Her feet were still feeling a tad bit on the icy side.

"That wasn\'t too bad."  Ryanna said so quietly, still used to the hush she used in the tunnels.  The thought of echo had kept her whispering in there, and now, she still was.  It was a pretty silent night, so she would be heard.  And if he couldn\'t hear clearly, he could always move closer.  That thought kept a smile on her face as she started walking.  Ryanna knew the way to her own house, glancing back to be sure Freddy was in tow.  He had promised her.

He smiled at her and nodded, still greatly relieved that the trapdoor was locked behind them and that they\'d got out without incident.  He knew that if he\'d met someone it wouldn\'t have caused too much of a fuss or a breach of protocol, it was just that he\'d be eternally teased for sneaking a young girl about the place and be accused of all sorts of indecent acts.  He wanted to spare both of them that particular kind of misery.

As he followed her through the streets, he became more acutely aware of the fact that they were travelling to her house so that he could help her out of her corset.  Oddly, he didn\'t regret it but he was rather hoping that she wouldn\'t, for he was looking forward to it now.  It would round off the evening with her rather... tantalisingly.

"That\'s my place," he pointed out the narrow townhouse to her as they exited the Innerkeep and began walking the Outerkeep\'s pathways instead.  He lived close to the divider of both.  "Well, the bottom floor is, anyway," he amended with a shy grin, as good as admitting that he didn\'t have a lot of money with which to buy somewhere fancy (and this one certainly didn\'t look fancy on the outside).

He fell quiet after that, thinking that he\'d said as much as he ought and unable to shake the image of his helping her with her corset.  Would she invite him to her bedroom to do so?  Turn away from him?  Keep herself modest?  Did he really want to keep thinking these thoughts?  They certainly weren\'t modest in his head.
