Something Shifting in the Shadows

On the night of the Grand Entrance

Laurent had been biding his time, sticking to the shadows and watching the city.  Politics shifted dramatically since the shadow demon had taken a pause to lick his wounds and think.  He was enjoying the chaos of the demon gangs in the west-- disappointed when everything was suddenly cleaned up overnight, of course, but this was how things went when there was no one strong to direct the Chaos.  Had he not been so Occupied, Laurent may have attempted to unite the rabble and lead them steamrolling through the city.  The thought was certainly Tempting, but he was intent on a different kind of Prize.  The city could wait.  The Politics would change, but the city--she would always stay the same.

The past eighteen months, when he was not attending to His Business outside the city, had been spent gathering intel on this 'Damien Evans.’  Infamous businessman and the vampire who had been keeping Rachel--no doubt in his bed, after all, who could resist such a Delicious Morsel.  Interesting to note the properties Damien had been busy acquiring--and the business he had now made official--though Laurent hadn't been able to piece together why.  Well, That Particular Information was not the Main Point--but for the sake of having material with which he could possibly strategize, Laurent had been keeping tabs on the general evolution of the vampire's business ventures.  Gathering intel on the vampire was slow going.  He was extremely careful, and while Laurent was patient he lacked the connections to make things go faster.  Nikolai was now a dead-end.  Which was Such A Shame considering how fun it had been to fuck with his mind.

But Laurent had found something now.  He heard whispers of a Great Gathering of important creatures being hosted by the most powerful family of vampires in the city.  This information wasn’t hard to find--the right people were eager to gossip about anything remotely political.  This could be An Opportunity though.  Up until this point he had not been successful in tracking down exactly where Damien had been hiding the Whore--since she appeared never to venture into the city.  No matter, Damien would be going to this Gathering--he was an important businessman now--and that would be An Opportunity.  It had been a long time, long enough for Her to wonder if it was safe to emerge again--Laurent could almost hear her think: maybe he had given up the search!  The thought gave a cruel and twisted smirk to the demon’s lips.  Oh, how he ached to watch her face shift the moment she realized that the safety of the little castle she had enclosed herself in was all crumbling.  Such Delicious Fright--that look she would give when he hauled her off to bed at last--the thought of it was arousing and made his mouth water.  Of course, he would have to break her in all over again--but that was the Very Best Part.

The shadow demon had arrived at the church at sunset, the brilliance of the sinking light casting long luxurious shadows across the grounds.  There were many places to hide and watch.  He entertained the idea of strolling inside the Holy Building to find some way to desecrate it--for fun, of course--and watch the pious Scatter in Terror.  But he was here on Business and had no intention of drawing any sort of unwanted attention to himself.  Finding a place where he could view the comings and goings onto the estate, Laurent settled himself into the shadows, seamless and invisible.  Those who were sensitive to dark energies would feel a strangeness that seemed to seep from the church, but nothing more.  Such feelings could easily be chalked up to Old Buildings keeping their Old Secrets.  He was confident that for the duration of his observation he would not be found.

Now, to wait.

Several vehicles slipped past the gates, too early for the Gathering--they must have been making the last of the preparations.  While Laurent could not see the mansion itself from where he was, he discovered that he could see directly into any cars that were heading there.  So he continued to watch, flawless vision allowing the demon to take in exactly who was going to this Great Gathering, all the while making himself as small and easy-to-miss as possible.  While waiting, he spent his time fantasizing about the different ways he would be Reminding His Whore Who She Belonged To.  First the fighting, then the break, the whimpering, and finally the begging.  Just like the Good Old Times.  She would not be escaping again.

Finally, there came the party he was looking for.  Damien Evans in the Silver Jaguar.  A wicked smile flashed in the shadows.
