Going My Way?
« on: June 05, 2019, 11:15:24 AM »
[for Billiam]

Luke pushed out of the Mei Jia apartment building and bounded into the night. Clad in a light gray hoodie and matching sweatpants, he broke into an easy jog- of course, an easy jog for Luke would clear a mile in five minutes. His lips were fixed in an idle, thoughtful smile as he moved. His hair was darkened by dampness, the product of the shower he'd taken before leaving Harm to sleep before he started a hospital shift.

It was a hard to believe things were going so well.

His expression darkened the instant he had the thought. His only constant companion, paranoia, stirred from its slumber. His gaze cut across the wide street, and he even spun a neat circle without breaking stride to check behind him. He'd had the sense lately that he was being watched, but he'd yet to spot anyone doing the watching. That meant that either a.) he wasn't being watched at all, or b.) whoever was doing it was damn good. He'd never taken the same route to Harm's place, since he'd started visiting, and he'd never taken anything approximating a direct route. He'd gone on foot, gone by car, gone by bus- he'd done everything in his power to keep himself from creating a pattern that anyone interested in his whereabouts could pick up on.

Harm had convinced him, or at least gotten him to pretend he was convinced, that it was option a. His rapid appraisal of his surroundings still hadn't yielded any unseen watchers, though, so he let himself relax as much as possible and did his best to enjoy the feel of the night air on what little of his skin was exposed.

His relaxation didn't last long. He'd barely cleared six blocks from the building when a car rolled up alongside him, pacing him at well below the speed limit. No, not just a car- a limousine.

"You've got to be fucking kidding me," he muttered.

The limo was a real classic, long and sleek, gleaming as if it had just come of the assembly line. The windows were tinted thoroughly, obliterating any chance he had of spotting who was inside. It wasn't as if he needed to see to know who was inside the car, though. He didn't know many people who rode in that kind of style or had the gall to simply roll up on him.

Luke slowed to a stop and set his hands a bit defiantly on his hips. His expression had reverted to a tightly controlled mask. Despite the fact that he would have bet his dick on the passenger of the limousine, he still tensed slightly, ready to attack or defend if this ended up being some ploy from Project Twilight or one of Jake's enemies. He doubted any of the latter would try something in such so noticeable in Jake's territory, though. The limo was unusual enough that bystanders would remember it, and might even remember details of who got in or out.

He flicked a glance down the street, back the way he and the limo had come, then returned his attention to the ostentatious car and waited.

The door popped open, revealing maroon upholstery made of leather. To Luke's credit, the Black Prince waited inside, wearing an all black suit, shoes, tie and dress shirt. His hair was straightened and worn over a single eye, and his nails were freshly painted black. A champagne bucket sat in the center of the back seat, a feature that came with the limo. Inside was a bottle and two glasses. Jake ushered Luke into the limo with his hand, and if Luke looked to see the driver, he'd noticed a hideous looking Russian man, with bad teeth, a crooked nose, and greasy hair. Assuming that Luke would join him in the vehicle, Jake didn't feel the need to have an escort encourage him like he'd done to Ben. He and Luke were... friends? The lack of clarity was one reason for his visit, one among many. His sword was nowhere in sight, left back at the Rabbit. Where Jake planned to go once the car started moving was unclear, but based on how nice he was dressed, Luke would likely figure this was a pit stop of Jake's night.

"Hey there solider, care for a drink?"

He picked up the bottle and one of the glasses and shook them like party favors. "I need a word," he clarified, letting Luke know this wasn't just a social call.

Luke forced himself not to look back at Harm's building again. He wasn't giving Jake any more information on that front than he already had. His gaze flicked across the interior of the limo, noting the driver. He was pretty sure he'd seen the guy around the White Rabbit a time or two, but he couldn't remember a specific instance. His eyes fell again on Jake, and without a sound, he eased into the limo and tugged the door shut behind him.

He fell heavily onto the seat opposite the Ventrue, folding his arms over his chest. His legs spread a bit. If the production values of the encounter impressed him, it certainly didn't show. As soon as he was seated the limo glided forward smoothly.

"'Unnecessary.'" He let a beat pass before adding: "You asked for a word, and it's the best one for this. I live in your house, Jake. You don't need to go far to talk." There was a note of scorn in his voice, as if he was being supremely inconvenienced by the limo ride.

He wanted to come out and ask why Jake was being so dramatic, but he couldn't. He knew the answer and he didn't really want to hear it. Not yet. There was no way Jake had found him here and didn't know about Harm. With the assets at his disposal, Jake probably knew more about Harm than he did at this point, if he'd managed to identify him. Luke's expression was stormy for an instant as he realized what a pipe dream it had been to hide anything from his employer.

Jake frowned at Luke's word, shaking the glass and bottle again to be annoying. He was here to give good news, not pick a fight, and he hoped he hadn't jumped the gun inviting Luke into his inner circle. Then again, he remembered how well things had gone when he picked up Ben in a limo. Maybe the move was more dickish than he thought. It was efficient, and yes intimidating to an extent, but hardly a true power play. That's what he told himself at least. He stuck the bottle and glass back the in the ice, and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it without asking for Luke's permission. He rolled the window down and blew the smoke out of it.

As Jake studied Luke, he found his whole posture defensive, and in the front seat the driver hissed out something akin to a laugh. Luke would no doubt here it, the chocked out sounds carrying into the backseat. Jake sent a mental message asking for silence, and the driver pushed a button causing a screen to go up. Luke was probably mad about being picked up so close to his little boyfriend's house. That was on the list to discuss, but Jake decided it wasn't a good idea to open with it.

"I have an engagement after this," Jake explained, justifying the pick up. "It was easier this way." He pulled out a thermos and took a sip, Luke no doubt knowing what was inside.

"How about we start over," he joked. "Luke, how is your evening off treating you," he small talked, with a mock amount of interest. He imagined Luke's night off was going well, considering how he'd soured at being interrupted.

The faintest smirk tugged the right corner of Luke's lips upward when the driver laughed his dusty laugh. He had to imagine that this wasn't how Jake had envisioned the encounter, and Jake's slight discomfiture made him feel slightly better about being observed and picked up off the street. He kept his expression neutral with just a hint of annoyance, but he was pissed. Only a little of his ire belonged to Jake, though - the bulk was leveled squarely inward.

If Jake's people could follow him and find him, who else could? Between the steady rhythm of working for the Black Prince and his stolen moments with Harm, he must have been getting too comfortable- comfortable enough to make mistakes.

He shifted his attention back to Jake. There was plenty of time to beat himself up later. As always, the had to fight through cognitive dissonance as he reconciled his employer's appearance with his role in the city. Enough of Jake's behavior was borderline-teenage enough that it was easy to forget that the man across the limo from him predated the United States.

"As it happens, I was heading back to the Rabbit to finish up a few reports. I don't really do evenings off." His hazel eyes were just a little cold as he made deliberate eye-contact with Jake. "But I'm guessing you already knew that." He paused for a beat, sifting through verbal options, and then opted for the direct approach. "What was it you wanted to talk to me about?"

Jake looked at Luke playfully, enjoying their little back and forth. He licked his lips, getting a small amount of blood he'd missed earlier. His eyes didn't move off Luke for a moment, and he relaxed his posture considerably. Luke was passively aggressively accusing him of following him, which was true and he wouldn't try to deny. He was a relative unknown being given lots of power and trust in a short period of time. He showed evidence of working for the enemy at one time, being brainwashed and having huge gaps of himself missing. Jake wanted to trust Luke. He actually did all things considered, but he wouldn't have been doing his job as district leader if he wasn't watching someone like Luke. Besides, Benny was going to do it anyways for fun. At least this way the spying served a purpose.

In response to his line about not taking days off Jake rolled his eyes and shot back, "what is that supposed to impress me?"

He decided that some good news might shift the conversation in his direction. Since Jake did plan on talking to Luke about his little squeeze he thought it should come when they were being agreeable. He held up a finger of wait and then popped the champagne, pouring Luke a glass, and handing it to him with a heavy gaze. Jake then poured his thermos into the other glass, holding it up to toast.

"Luke, do you enjoy working for me? I hope you do because I've enjoyed your work. I think you can help the people of this city while you figure out who you are. I want to keep helping in that capacity too. What I'm trying to say is, I have a job to offer you."

His word vomit had sounded nervous, but sincere, and he smiled and raised his glass again as he waited for the soldier's response.

Luke's posture remained intact. The pressed military edges had worn away in the months since he'd ran afoul of Jake, leaving him less rigid, if still entirely poised. It was hard not to be, with a body so perfectly packed with muscle. He regarded Jake dubiously from his seat as the vampire loosed the cork from the bottle of champagne. He'd assumed that was reserved for whomever Jake had plans with after. He'd lost track of the Ventrue's romantic life... well, basically since Harm happened, actually. Huh.

He leaned forward to accept the glass, then obliged Jake in touching bubbly to blood. He watched the bubbles flowing up through the golden liquid for a second before returning his attention to Jake.

Luke blinked slowly. A job to offer him? As far as Luke was concerned, he already had a job. Hell, he casually referred to Jake as his boss all the time. Maybe he didn't have a title, but it wasn't as if he was worried about how his resumé would end up looking.

"I thought I already had a job." The words came slowly, tinged with confusion. "Is this... a different job? I..." He cut off, and then shrugged. "I guess I enjoy it well enough. It's nice to have something to do. Your folks are really coming along." He frowned slightly. "What kind of job are you talking about?" He hadn't sipped the champagne yet. His confusion had him out of sorts. Instead, he kept the flute lofted awkwardly in the air, his large hand at odds with the delicate stem.

Jake sighed and shot Luke an apologetic face. He'd been fairly vague about Luke's current position, and so he didn't think it was too strange that the soldier didn't have a clear idea where he stood. The truth was, Jake had been testing him for something, and after talking with a few random security officers, Lisa-Joe and Benny, and now Maria, he'd decided to make it official. He smiled wide, and made the offer.

"There has been a position in our government that's been vacant for quite a while. My friend Conner held it once, before he went to run the Ward, and since then it's duties have been managed by myself and Lisa. As you've noticed, our government is a local one, but is still quite vast in scope due to the population. I need someone to manage our security teams, conduct criminal investigations, enforce our laws and occasionally protect me. That person is called the sheriff. I've chosen you because I believe you want to make this city a safer place. You have the right training, and I believe if you think I'm wrong you'll tell me. It's at the very top of our government. Are you interested?"

Jake pointed to Luke's champagne flute and then to his lips.

Jake's wide smiles never failed to make him just a little nervous. There was nothing wrong with them, and that was almost the problem. They were almost too perfect, too warm, too inviting. For an instant they tugged at him, and then he remembered what Jake was and the fangs that hid behind those pert lips.

His brow remained slightly furrowed as Jake made his pitch. He hadn't failed to notice that he'd been ending up with more and more responsibility, but this was bigger than he was expecting- or at least, it seemed that way. As it stood, the people working with him on patrols deferred to him, but the authority was all Jake's. He'd eked out a little respect under the auspices of that authority, but at the end of the day, he was pretty sure everyone he talked to was reporting to the Ventrue and wouldn't hesitate to throw him under the bus if they thought it would earn them points with the big boss.

He blinked again when Jake gestured and then parsed its meaning and took a slow sip of the bubbly. Champagne wasn't his favorite, but he had to admit, this was good stuff. Smooth, crisp, just a perfect hint of sweetness. He wasn't surprised to learn that Jake's exquisite taste extended to celebratory beverages.

"You're right that I've been doing this to make the city safer, and your damn right that I'll tell you when I think your wrong." A wry smirk formed on his lips, but it slipped away. He took a contemplative sip from the champagne, and this time it went down even easier. "You're right that it's a good job for me. But... well, let's deal with the obvious problem first."

He tapped his forehead with a gloved finger. "You said it's real easy to get in here. That doesn't matter so much if I don't actually know anything important, but this sheriff gig sounds like I'd have to be really in the fold. What's to stop some punk kid with a little Dominate under his belt from cracking me open like a melon?" He took another sip, shrugging. "It seems like a liability for you, and as your currently-untitled-security-adviser, I'd strongly recommend not handing over any of your power or secrets to someone with a revolving door to his psyche."

Jake was happy Luke at least looked interested, and his concerns were valid. Jake had them too. He didn't need a walking security risk. Lucky for both Luke and Jake, the central district had magic now in house, and Maria had assured him things could be done to help Luke. His smug face softened into something more relaxed, and almost concerned. He reached out his hand and if Luke would let him would place it on his knee.

"I have a witch who's promised to help keep your mind your own, even from me unless you wish it," he explained. "Before you formally take the job and I announce it to the city, we'll make sure you're properly protected."

He wanted to protect Luke. He'd grown attached to his gruff manner and military way of doing things. He was the right man for the job, and Jake would take the steps needed to make sure he could do it. Besides, Luke deserved to have his mind be safe, Independent of whether he worked for Jake or not. He beamed another perfect smile, although this time a single fang poked out from beneath his lips.

Luke lofted an eyebrow when Jake reached for his knee, but didn't resist.

"Ah, of course, a witch," he intoned wryly before taking a thoughtful sip of champagne. Magic was... not something he knew much about. It was too nebulous, with too many types and sources and variations to catalog in any meaningful way. His instincts tugged against the idea of being subject to something so capricious. Jake's mental abilities were magnitudes more reliable, if less versatile. "I guess let me meet h- er, them, and we can see." He didn't bother to disguise his dubiousness about the plan.

Jake's hand was still on his knee. While it didn't have any warmth to convey, it was still a hint of weight and pressure that was impossible to ignore. He shifted slightly in his seat, ostensibly just getting comfortable, but it had the added effect of resettling his leg so that the Ventrue's hand would fall away unless he went to obvious lengths to keep it there.

"That settles the first problem, in theory. The second problem is me needing a real clear idea of the org chart." He met Jake's eyes. "I don't have any problem with Lisa-Joe, but I also don't want someone that hot-headed gainsaying me when the stakes are high. I'd prefer she be as uninvolved as possible for anything that falls under my purview, and assurances that she'll follow my lead when needed. Same goes for anyone else."

Jake looked at Luke condescendingly. After all he'd seen, were witches really that big of a surprise? Maria was as kind as they came, and so Jake wasn't worried that they wouldn't get on. It was Lisa-Joe he was concerned about. Maria had already been working on a solution to Luke's problem, and had assured Jake she had the talent and supplies needed. He'd come to value her effectiveness, her magic protecting the White Rabbit as an example.

He scoffed crossly at his hand being shooed away, but made no attempt to replace it. He thought about how he shouldn't mind, but for some reason he did. He didn't have to think about it for very long, as Luke read his mind for once and brought up Lisa-Joe, and their future working relationship.

"You run different departments," he started, before turning to the catch. "But they do overlap. If she enforces a boon on someone as Harpy, it's your job to back her up. You can't question her decisions even if you disagree with them when it comes to her department. She'll show you the same respect if you show it to her. Nobody pulls rank around here, well except for me, but I'm the prince."

He smiled at the mention of his title. He continued before Luke could rebut. "She doesn't want anything to do with the security teams. She doesn't want your job. Important topics are brought before me, and I need all of my advisers opinions. She'll follow your orders if you're ever both in the field, but you'll get farther by making nice with her than calling her things like hot-headed and gainsaying."

His tone was rather firm on this. Luke hadn't been around long, and Lisa-Joe was the most respected person in the White Rabbit. He would do better making nice with her than being at odds. He'd be telling Lisa-Joe the same. This organization wasn't a pissing a contest between who has more or less clout.

Between the look of condescension and the scoff, Luke couldn't help but frown. The faint downward turn to his full lips wasn't far off from his usual stoic expression, but Jake might very well notice it.

The frown deepened unmistakably at what felt like a rebuke. He finished off his champagne and settled the glass back beside the ice bucket before settling back in his seat with his arms folded across his chest. "But she is hot-headed, and not entirely fond of me. Sure, she doesn't seem to actively want me dead these days, but I'm guessing she isn't thrilled about your choice here. You know I'm not going to pick fights, and I could give a rat's ass about power outside how it affects my ability to do the job you picked me for." His shoulders rose and fell. "As long as you've had the same little chat with her, I guess it is what it is."

His gaze hadn't left Jake, and his expression softened after the fight went out of his voice. "I appreciate what you've done for me. What you've promised to do. There's a part of me that fucking hates it, but it mostly realizes that you're not the worst as far as monsters go." He was quieter when he continued. "I'll follow your lead, but if you expected me to just shut up and follow orders without questioning you, you wouldn't have picked me for the job. I think that might be the one thing she and I have in common."

Jake felt himself soften as Luke spoke to Lisa-Joe's motivations. He wasn't wrong. She was hotheaded, and Jake could see how to an even tempered soldier how that was a drawback. Jake loved Lisa-Joe's emotions. He was the same in a lot of ways. Still, he needed to be fair to everyone, especially a new employee like Luke. He sighed to make a dramatic point.

"She is more okay with the promotion then you think," he corrected. "She wasn't a fan at first, but consider her position. You bested me in physical combat. I'm not proud but you're human. That's impressive but to her scary. Then you're living in her home. I'm not saying you don't have a point. She's a huge bitch sometimes and she didn't make a good impression when you met, but she's seen the work you've been doing in the meantime. She thinks you're mostly qualified."

He took a sip of blood to avoid telling him what parts she didn't think Luke possessed. "Take her to lunch or something. I'm sure if you two talk you'll realize you're both on my team."

He listened as Luke explained, and he couldn't help but be disappointed that Luke still saw him as a monster, even if he was one of the good ones. It meant on some level Luke still thought he was human, and while he might be alive with a pulse, he was no mere mortal any longer. Jake considered telling him so, but decided now wasn't the right time. He felt Luke needed more time to see that the people who changed him were bigger monsters than the average vampire.

"I'm glad we found one another," Jake said softly, his face looking the most boyish it had looked all evening. "You're a good man. I don't know you perfectly, but  I know that. I need a good person as my sheriff." He paused, and his expression turned into something awkward.

"You also scare me," he admitted. "It's another good qualification. The sheriff should inspire a bit of fear, but have a good man behind that."

He cocked a somewhat dubious eyebrow at the idea of taking a vampire to lunch, but let it pass. When would that even be? Midnight? And lunch tended to imply a shared meal...

He forced himself to stop thinking about that and focus on Jake, which proved to be something of a mistake. The youthful, earnest expression he wore as he dubbed Luke good was breathtaking. Jake had been so young when he'd been turned, and sometimes it seemed like more than just his looks had been made static. He might have had centuries of unlife under his belt, but in so many ways, he was just such a damn kid. It got the better of him more often than Luke would have liked to admit.

He rolled his eyes before meeting Jake's gaze evenly. "You could tell me to jump out of this car into traffic right now and I wouldn't have any choice. You don't have anything to be scared-"

He cut off abruptly, frowning at Jake uncertainly.

"Wait. This witch. Whatever she's planning... would it protect me from you, too?" The words came slowly and unsure, as if he wasn't at all certain what answer he wanted to hear. There was a hint of comfort in the notion that someone could stop him if he lost control, and he felt the fluttering start of panic in his chest at the idea of losing that safeguard.

Suspicion followed, and his eyes narrowed slightly. Why would Jake give up that kind of leverage over him? Sure, he needed his own secrets safe, but if he really was willing to give up his ability to bend Luke's will...

His expression softened at that thought before resolving into his typical unreadability while he awaited Jake's response.
