1990 - Smells Like Teen Spirit

The city, 1990

“I promise, this place is legit.”  Jeremiah Peterson turned to his brother, fangs flashing in a wide grin.  They’d only been in the infamous supernatural city for a couple of days now and he already knew about all of the notable Hot Spots.  So far, this city had proved to be everything he hoped for--nobody gave a shit if you showed your true self!  The city wasn’t in flames, there were still humans going about living their lives (lots of them still totally oblivious).  Everything looked perfectly fine, and he couldn’t understand why it wasn’t like this everywhere--it seemed so simple!

Positively buzzing, Jerry jumped in place a couple of times before crossing the street to the two-story brick building with blacked-out windows.  There was a short line in front of the door, and he was sure they weren’t going to be waiting too long to get in.  The night was still young and he was eager to have some fun.  He still wasn’t used to the sheer number of vampires in such a concentrated area, and being at a vampire club only intensified the excitement.  Sure, they’d popped into some smaller gatherings, stumbled into a few nests or covens or whatever they were called--but none of them compared to this city.

The bouncers at the entrance didn’t smell like any human he’d encountered before.  There was something sulfurous and crackly about them.  Jerry’s grin dropped a bit.  It took a great deal of self-control to avoid openly gaping.  He must’ve looked like such a tourist.

Whatever.

Once taking their place at the end of the line, Jeremiah smoothed down the front of his red flannel button-up shirt and ran a hand through his hair.  Tucking his hands in the front pockets of his ripped denim jeans, he peered around at the others in line as discretely as Jeremiah Peterson could manage.

There were definitely humans here.  So this place was a feeding club!  Initially, he thought that part must’ve been too good to be true, but they were definitely letting humans inside.  His mouth was already watering.  When there was only one person in front of him, Jerry turned around and gave Zach a mischievous look before being allowed inside.

Another line!  Ugh.  A pout replaced the grin, but it was shortlived as he looked around.  There was a vampire stationed at what looked like a check-in desk, and for a second he was worried that they’d have to be on some kind of list to actually get in.

“Welcome.  Been here before?”  The pretty redhead smiled and Jerry flashed one right back.

“No, Ma’am.”

“Here you go, hun.”  She handed him what looked like a brochure, but he was too busy paying attention to her mouth to notice.  “Read it or not, at your own Risk.  Enjoy your evening.”

Jerry only glanced at it enough to see WELCOME TO RISK  --  RULES  printed at the top.  He rolled his eyes and passed it back to his brother as they continued through the line to the glass door leading to the club.

Zachariah Peterson was, oddly, nervous. He could already feel the bass pumping from within the building, and could almost imagine that it was his heart; freshly revived and pulsing a jittery tattoo within the dusty confines of his ribcage. This city’s atmosphere was unlike any other he’d experienced. Everything was out and open for anyone to see - public - and Zach still felt compelled to wear a mask of mortality. Still, he found Jerry’s enthusiasm mildly contagious; and, in this moment, he envied his capacity to remain so carefree.

With lips pressed into a soft smile, Zach trailed after his bouncing brother at a sedate pace. His shoulders were hunched forward, thumbs hooked through the beltloops of black, acid-wash jeans. He wore them cuffed and rolled over the laced tops of a pair of original 1460 Docs. A classic black tee was tucked into the waistband; worn beneath your standard leather motorcycle jacket, with its asymmetrical-zip kept open and loose.

Outwardly, he seemed far less concerned with the nearby milieu than Jerry, whose open gawking wasn’t as subtle as he likely believed it to be. Internally, however... He was wired. With each forward step, each blaring efflux of electronica brought about by the sliding glass door as it opened for its patrons, Zach felt more and more on edge. The unfamiliar scent of the bouncers didn’t help. A scent resembling campfire and black pepper, fused with something borderline acidic; curling against the back of his throat like bile. He stopped breathing.

Jerry’s mischievous backward glance was met with the mental equivalent of an eye-roll; and Zach nearly laughed when they rounded the corner to discover that the line was still ongoing. Upon reaching the podium - where the pretty vampire hostess sat primped upon her stool, passing out cards and brochures - he stood close to his brother to denote their togetherness, and bypass any reiterated questioning.

He accepted the leaflet from Jerry, and thumbed it open. Zach had always been of a mind that most rules were in place for a reason. Sure, he’d broken a few - and, moreover, had enabled Jerry in transgressions-a-plenty. Still, he felt that awareness was important. Sometimes he couldn’t help but to wonder if Jerry intentionally overlooked guidelines, knowing that Zach would intercept before things could go too far. Probably not.

If a Risk groupie is marked with a tattoo on the wrist, they are not to be killed. No ifs, or ands; just that. One rule, plain and simple. It seemed that, this time, Jerry was right to be dismissive. Neither of them was a killer. It was an easy rule to follow. Zach folded up the pamphlet and stuffed it into his back pocket.

As they stepped over the threshold of the glass partition, past the bouncers that stood still as stone, and into the club proper; as they were blasted with music that had a far better sound from therein, Zach felt himself finally begin to relax. After moving aside to allow entry for those in line behind them, he stood still for a moment in observation. The bar; the dancefloor; the neon blue lighting and disco-ball ceiling. It wasn’t until he felt the brush of fingertips across his abdomen that he broke from his quiet scrutiny.

A woman had touched him in passing, slow and grazing; Jerry, too, was afforded her affections by way of a puckering of full, painted lips. Her head was shaved, and she wore a skintight dress made of dichroic vinyl. It was transparent; made evident when she moved to lean against the bar, and the reflective film had met just enough shadow for Zach to note that everything beneath was on full display. Nothing left to the imagination.

Zach lofted his brows, and cast a grin toward Jerry.

Zach's thawing as they finally entered the club gave Jerry some relief.  Secretly (though perhaps not so secretly--were there any secrets to keep from a fledge?) he worried his brother wouldn't enjoy his choice of activity for the evening.  All of his senses were swallowed by the atmosphere of the club, slipping over him like the touch of a comforting blanket.  The succulent scent of blood and sweat dominated his mind, adding to the intensity of the music thumping together like one great heartbeat.  If he'd been any younger it might've been too much.  He didn't know where to look or what to do, and his attention darted around the club at random until the pair were approached by a delectable human.

Hot.  Mouthwatering.  Jerry's eyes roved over the woman as she passed by, delighted by what his vision had access to.  He caught his brother's look and his grin, that never really left his face since they entered the building, widened.

Share? He passed the thought to Zach with a mischevious expression before heading straight to the bar where the enticing human had gone to.  She'd be sexy to dance with.  Or on.  Between the two of them would be sexy as hell--but Zach would never go for that.  It was funny to imagine.

Jerry was off before his brother could respond or object, sliding casually up to the woman's right side and leaning against the bar on one arm.  All smooth-like.

"Hey there," He leaned in toward her to speak loud enough for her to hear.  "Can I buy you a drink?"

---

Malakai perched thoughtfully atop a barstool just inside Risk, an unlit cigarette between his lips.  So far he'd just sat and people-watched, being positioned just at the entrance made it easier.  Deeper in the club with its chaotic lighting everyone was writhing in one twisting mass.  It was a bit much for him.  It was still early enough in the evening but he was already looking forward to leaving.  He never liked hanging around Risk longer than it took to feed, anxious to get back to work on his latest project.  One thing he did enjoy about coming to risk were all of the outrageous outfits people came with.  It was an endless source of inspiration.

He fished in the pockets of his jacket for a lighter, pulling it open to check the inner pockets when the outer ones prooved empty.  The shifting leather exposed his plain black tee with a low-dipping neckline, the metal chain of dog tags jingling with his movement.  He finally produced a plastic neon orange lighter and ignited the tip of his cigarette.  After a puff, the lighter slipped into the front pocket of his black denim jeans, ripped tastefully at the knees.

The vinyl-clad woman taking the barstool next to him was a sight.  He loved the look of vinyl but it could be a pain to work with.  His eyes flickered over the tattooed wrist marking her as one of Risk's own.  As he was taking another drag, Mal thought about complimenting her choice of outfit as an opening (hopefully leading to a feeding opportunity) and was about to open his mouth before another vampire darted to the other side of her.

So much for that.

The woman angled herself toward Jerry, wearing the sort of smile that said she’d been expecting him; self-satisfied and knowing. “That depends,” she drawled, gazing at him beneath lowered lashes. Leaning forward, she brought her lips close to his ear, then whispered hotly, “Are you hoping to catch a buzz?” The movement favored Jerry; serving to tighten the unyielding construct of her dress, and amplify the press of rounded curves beneath.

---

Images of the woman sandwiched between he and his brother, shimmying provocatively, flickered unwanted within Zach’s consciousness; influenced by Jerry’s shameless imaginings. Hell no. He knew he wouldn’t need to express his opposition. Unsurprisingly, Jerry was already off to advance upon the girl, anyway. He would find someone else with whom to satiate his hunger.

Zach stood where he was for a time; debating whether or not he wanted to try his luck on the dancefloor, or station himself at the bar. Ultimately, he chose the latter - determining the former to be too excessive for his tastes. The night was young, and there was plenty of time yet to reconsider his methods; if no one engaged him, he could always roam in a more active pursuit.

He claimed the stool to Jerry’s right, twisting away to afford the pair some privacy. Not that either of them was likely to care if he observed in their coquetry. Still, Zach draped an arm over the bar in an unconscious mirroring of his brother’s posture - peering down its opposing length in regard of its varying devotees.

Jerry was delighted that she played along, eyeing her lips as she spoke and glancing lower when she came closer.  The whisper sent a pleasant chill through him and he shortened the distance between their bodies as much as their current position would accommodate.  "That depends," he bit his lip gently, "You offerin'?"

Wicked sexy.

---

Mal wasn't keen on listening so closely to this younger vampire whispering suggestive things into the human's ear.  He was feeling a bit grumpy about having lost a good opening and didn't really want to stick around to watch it progress toward its inevitable end.  After taking a few leisurely drags off his cigarette, he swiveled around and dismounted the barstool.  Moving unnoticed past the pair, he squeezed into the other available space at the bar next to the vampire to their right.

"Sup,"  He gave him a small nod of the head, leaning back against the bar on his elbows.  The two smelled similar, enough to make him figure they shared blood but he couldn't determine how.  They seemed close enough in age so he doubted they were sire and fledge, more likely fledge brothers.  Definitely too personal of a question to ask at Risk on a busy night.

"First time here?"  Earlier he'd observed the way the two looked around at Risk before moving out of the way of the steady stream of patrons entering.  Malakai turned his head away before exhaling smoke, tapping the ashes into one of the ashtrays on the bar.

The corners of her mouth quirked; initially curved into some semblance of a smirk, lips drawn briefly inward to touch the tip of her tongue, before stretching wide in a grinning flash of teeth. “Take a wild guess,” she suggested around a breath of laughter. A hand rose to snake slowly around his back, dipping lower to subject his ass to a none-too-gentle squeeze. Subtle.

---

Zach had spent the better part of his vampiric existence learning to tune out Jerry’s more intimate adventures; enough that he’d gotten pretty good at it. It was still there, hovering in the back of his mind in the same way that some annoyingly catchy song might, but it was turned way down. Muted. Still, he was glad for the added distraction that the vampire offered, and Zach repositioned the drape of his arm in polite accommodation as the other leaned back on leather-clad elbows.

He’d seen him posted by the door before, and dismissed him; looking thoughtful, if a bit bored. Perhaps that was why he’d come to talk to Zach. Or was it that he, too, was looking to escape the debauchers at his back? The thought served to coax forth a rather subdued smile, mildly humored in cast.

“Yeah,” he replied, dipping his own head by way of greeting. “Not yours?” The question was concise, but not curt; an opening to carry on the dialogue if he wished.

Jerry made some kind of purring-noise to indicate his pleasure at her touch and motioned to the bartender to order her a drink.  One hand drifted boldly to the small of her back and the other reached around into his back pocket to retrieve some cash.

"So uh, you got a name, gorgeous?"  His fingers traced her spine and he gave her a most charming smile.  Jeremiah was, as usual, oblivious to any affects the conversation would have on Zach or the surrounding people.

---

"Nah," Mal caught a glimpse of the ass grabbing and subtly winced.  "Safer place to feed than out on the streets."  He offered a maybe-unnecessary explanation for his frequenting the club despite his distaste for it.  Ever since the supes had their coming out party, there'd been talks of concern in some circles about attracting hunters to the city.  Malakai had no intention of being bold about his nature, hoping he'd avoid anything too crazy so long as he kept his head down.

"I'm Malakai,"  he moved the hand between them--a bit awkwardly--for a shake.  "You been in this city long?"

“You can call me Crescent,” she similarly purred. If Jerry was given to thought-delving, he’d identify her real name as Amelia, and know she had a different name for every night. She didn’t care that many of Risk’s patrons could detect her falsehoods. In fact, she delighted in the hope that someone might call her out on them; might be goaded toward treating her with spite, or malice as result. Parents would often warn their children to avoid playing with their food - but no one ever said anything relative to the reverse, and Amelia loved to play.

When the bartender answered to Jerry’s beckoning, Crescent lifted the last three fingers of her left hand, the tips of her thumb and forefinger touching, and waggled them in indication. With a nod, he lined up a trio of shot glasses, and filled each with a healthy measure of bourbon. Technically, she’d only been offered one drink, but she didn’t think this vampire would complain. If he did, she would just find another to have her fun with. A single drink wouldn’t have been enough to make either of them feel good, anyway.

Crescent leaned forward to claim the shots, and very deliberately pressed against Jerry in the process. “So sorry,” she provided in mock-shame, locking her gaze onto Jerry’s as she downed two in quick succession; lingering with third in hand.

---

Zach’s attention drifted in a second study of the place, as though gauging the merit of Malakai’s words. He found no fault in them. Here, everyone sought the same things; different versions of them, perhaps, but they were all still mutually related. Humans who wanted the bite, and vampires who’d come to feed. For some, that was enough in and of itself; while others sought further liaisons. Particulars aside, it did make for a safer environment. Especially for those like Zach, who weren’t yet ready to display their truths so publicly.

He twisted to clasp the other vampire’s hand within his own; his shake was firm, without asserting any measure of dominance. “Zach. Tonight marks our third night.” A subtle jerk of his head, indicative of Jerry, illustrates the ‘our’ in his statement; accompanied by the curve of another soft smile, whose cast was borderline apologetic.

“Crescent,” he savored the name on his tongue, eyeing her hungrily.  Jerry was not the thought-delving type, nor did he give much of a shit whether or not she gave him a fake name.  She was hot and paying attention to him--what more could he ask for?

“I’m Jeremiah,” he offered with a little twang, thumbing open his wallet for some cash.

Jeremiah watched her address the bartender, gathering that she frequented this place enough for a wordless exchange.  It only made his grin wider.  He was beginning to really like this Crescent chick.  When three shots were poured, initially he thought at least one of them was meant for him.  He was about to explain something that he thought was wicked obvious but then she pressed that marvelous body against him before downing each shot one by one and leaving his mouth hanging stupidly open.

Okay, now he was definitly hard.

He didn’t look away from him until the bartender repeated the total for the drinks, prompting Jerry to fish out another bill unexpectedly.  Damn clubs with their overpriced drinks.  But it was going to be totally worth it--even though they were short on cash.

“You wanna dance or find someplace quiet to finish that.”  He nodded at the third shot and met her eye with a sly smile.

---

Mal was about halfway through his cigarette, abandoning it in the ashtray in favor of talking.  He didn’t care too much about smoking, it was more a way to get humans to approach--either for a light or to bum.  Worked like a charm at Risk and out on the streets.

“Oh?  Word.”  He caught the implication behind Zach’s smile and briskly laughed.  “You looking to settle or just passing through?”  So many questions--Mal hoped he wasn’t being too nosy.  With the city the way it was now, he always worried about those who were newer in town, ignorant to the recent changes and vulnerable to whatever crazy shit was about to happen.  If anything was about to happen.  He’d only been staying here for about five years and hadn’t really made significant friends beyond the clientele he served.  Friends.  Now that was thinking a little too far ahead.  Besides, he wasn’t sure he wanted anything to do with the blonde even if Zach seemed pretty rad.

In stark contrast to her previous shooting of alcohol, Crescent sipped daintily from her final glass. Her smile was very much that of a contented cat as she watched Jerry fish out a second bill. With his partial-inquiry, she pushed away from him - stepping down from her stool to wordlessly sashay toward the dance floor. Of course, she expected he would follow.

---

Zach’s smile broadened following Malakai’s bark of laughter, however briefly. He hadn’t really considered his question until then, so he shrugged - leaning forward to drape his forearms over his knees as he gave it thought. They’d been floating about of late; living as vagrants, squatting in abandoned buildings at daybreak. Not ideal, but they couldn’t really afford safer accommodations. Especially not when Jerry was known to spend a bit recklessly.

As it stood, it didn’t much matter if they planned to stay or go. Funds were dwindling, and they’d need to make some extra cash before they could commit to either option - and preferably soon.

“I’m not really sure,” said Zach, finally. One of his hands rose from its position; raking first through his hair, before pausing to rub at his nape amidst its returning descent. Jerry liked it there well enough, and Zach wouldn’t have minded digging in his heels for a while.

With another easy roll of his shoulders, he looked toward Malakai, then asked, “Do you like it?” Meaning the city, not the club. For some reason, Zach felt like his opinion mattered; like whatever response he gave might serve as some sort of determining factor.

Stay, or go?

“Well, that’s a complicated question to answer.”  Mal smiled and rubbed the back of his head.  “It was different when I first came here.  Everyone wasn’t all…” he gestured at the air arbitrarily, “Out in the open.”  He let a bit of silence pass between the two of them, reminiscing.  There was something truly special about this city--for some reason, the supernatural and strange just flocked here.  There were places like this in other parts of the world, surely, but most of the world seemed to hinge on fierce fights for territory among ancients, or the threat of human hunters.  This city promised to be neither--at first.

“I do like it, though,” he smiled down at the floor in front of them, he continued slowly.  “The city’s got a good soul, I just think it’s at a...transitional period.”

Mal glanced up just in time to notice a plain-dressed tough-looking vampire bare down after Zach’s companion as he made his way to the dancefloor with the bald human.  “That doesn’t look good,” he said with humor under his breath.

---

The “tough-looking vampire” was around two hundred, faster and stronger than Jeremiah, and grabbed his arm before the younger vampire was able to disappear into the crowded dancefloor.

“Back off, Stella is mine.”

Jerry yanked his arm away, glaring.  “I didn’t see anyone’s name on her.”  What the fuck.  He glanced back into the crowd to see where Crescent--or Stella?--had gone, but didn’t quite see her.  “Fuck you gonna do about it?”  He looked back to the older vampire with a challenging gaze.  Motherfucker was spoiling his sexy mood.  Besides, there were plenty of other tasty mortals to choose from.  Stupid territorial vamps.

Zachariah listened; focus steadied upon Malakai, and only wavering in pursuit of the arbitrary sweep of his hand. He passed the silent spell with thoughts of his own, a subtle crease effectively redoubling the moodiness of his brow. He’d been under the assumption that this was simply the way things were here; how they’d always been. Unreserved and unrestrained. How long had it been since the supernatural had decided to unleash themselves upon the public? How had they gone about it? ... He couldn’t escape the gut-wrenching thought that they hadn’t exposed themselves gently.

When Mal spoke again, He smoothed his frowning brow. The city’s got a good soul. A statement as reassuring as it was poetic. Any soul could be warped and twisted; impressed upon by its surrounding corruption. So long as the good outweighed the bad, there was capacity for optimism. That, for him, was enough.

Zach managed only a low hum of consideration, issued forth from deep within the column of his throat, before Mal had called attention to the confrontation. He’d have known it was happening as soon as the older vampire had seized Jerry’s arm - would have felt it, through their bond - but now, he observed from his own perspective. Jeremiah had a penchant for provoking others, and Zach was usually the one to mitigate. In this instance, however, he couldn’t find any fault in his brother’s behavior (lasciviousness notwithstanding). The woman - Crescent/Stella, his subconscious supplied, echoing Jerry’s blip of confusion - hadn’t the conduct of someone claimed. At least, not someone who wanted to be, if her actions were to be believed.

Politely, he excused himself from Malakai, delivering a decisive, “I’ll be right back.” He rose from his stool, and strode toward the pair at a cool, easy pace.

Not a word was offered as he lifted a hand to rest upon his brother’s shoulder. It was a gesture meant to convey his support - to bolster and back - rather than suggest he cede. Zach leveled a resolute gaze upon the other vampire’s, and did his best to keep any challenge out of it. Though his desire to fight was null, two-against-one was better odds, and he was willing to oppose on principle.

The older vampire met Zach's gaze with a flare of a challenge in his own.  After a moment of a staredown, he relaxed the tension and shrugged, making a move to turn away.  Jerry glanced back at Zach with a smug look on his face and pulled away from the hand resting on his shoulder.

"Yeah, that's right you walk away you--"

Before Jerry could do so much as close his mouth, a fist connected with his nose in a loud smack, sending him reeling back into the chest of his brother.  It was like a crack of lightning jolting through his skull, splotches blooming across his vision in red, orange, green, and yellow.  "Motherfucker," he pitched forward as if he were going to fall or charge after the attacker.  Instead, he leaned one hand on his knee and cupped his nose tenderly with the other, thick dark blood dripping from between his fingers.

Malakai watched the scene unfold before him, seeing the punch coming well before the younger vampire did but not quick enough to intervene.  It wasn't uncommon for certain vampires to get attached to Risk's donors--not that anyone enforced a kind of ownership beyond "this is my favorite toy and you're not allowed to play with it while I'm here."  There should've been rules to prevent these sorts of altercations, he figured, glancing around the room for any signs of bouncers making a move to break things up.  The action had only turned a few heads--none of them seemed to be bouncers although one of the bartenders scoffed and laughed--and their eyes didn't linger as the altercation dissolved before it truly started.

Mal's eyes tracked the offending party as he moved past the distracted brothers and into the throngs of humans at the center of the club.  He probably wouldn't be back.  That was usually the extent to these sorts of disputes.  No one wanted banishment from Risk.

A tight, though sympathetic, smile on his face, Mal ordered a quick glass of blood and made his way over to the two newcomers.

"You straighten it out?"  He asked softly, blood in hand.

Jerry glared up at him, "Didja see th-that asshole? I didn't even fuckin' do anything--Ow!"  He pressed the sides of his nose with his finger and thumb as the bleeding stopped.

"Straighten it before it heals, you don't want it to--ugh," Mal sighed.  It would take much longer to heal if it wasn't positioned correctly.   "Here, take this."  He handed the glass of blood to Zach before turning his attention to the other vampire.  "Come here."  moving aside the hand covering the broken nose, Mal quickly repositioned it with a series of little snaps.

"What the fuck, man!"  Jerry wrenched away, holding his hand back up to his nose.

Don’t say anything, just let him-- too late. Zachariah staggered away from his backpedaling brother, secondhand starbursts flaring briefly through his awareness. Fuck. An instinctive hand rose to gingerly cradle his own nose, but swiftly fell away. Once the initial shock of the blow had subsided, Zach drew a breath, and released it upon the sort of sigh that said he had expected nothing less. Jerry had never been the type to just let things be; too fucking arrogant to keep from spouting off.

There were times Zach considered running his own mouth - if only so Jerry could share in the consequences the same way that he so often did. He’d been blindsided by many a reciprocal strike: stinging slaps; contusing sucker-punches; and even the occasional choking, constrictive discomfort associated with a swift kick to the nether-world. Though the resulting ‘pain’ he felt was more a reflection of Jerry’s emotional response, Zach found it unpleasant all the same, and thus afforded him very little sympathy.

When the glass was pressed into his hand, Zach’s brows lofted quizzically. They sold blood by the pint here? He was so distracted by the revelation, that he was caught freshly unaware by the resetting of his brother’s nose; managing, this time, to only wince.

“Thanks,” Zach offered, extending the glass to return it to Malakai. He glanced toward Jerry, bidding him to be civil, before supplying, “That’s my brother; Jeremiah.”

Mal fluidly took the glass from Zach's hand and held it to the brother--

"Jeremiah-"

"Jerry's fine," without looking up, he snorted the slow leak of blood back into his nasal passage, making a very undignified sound.

Mal's expression revealed a bit of distaste and he reconsidered the extended offering of blood.  It wasn't cheap to get here--not that he had anything to worry about as far as finances were concerned--but he suspected that Jerry would settle down a bit with something red.  Besides, it would quicken the healing nose break.

"I'm Malakai, or Mal if you'd rather," he smirked, "Here, take this."

With relief written plainly on his features, Jerry didn't hesitate in the hand-off and was quick to guzzle and slurp.  Mal responded with a tight smirk, glancing back to Zach for reference before watching Jerry finish.

"Thanks, man,"  Jerry let out a loud, satisfied exhale, "I really appreciate that."  His genuine grateful smile was a touch messy between the teeth.  He took the time now that his head was a bit clearer after downing his glass to check out the older vampire--not nearly as inconspicuous as he thought he was being.  Mal pretended not to notice.

"No problem," There was the hint of sarcasm to his tone and he turned to Zach, "Buy you a drink?"  It was the hospitable thing to do, he supposed.  After all, he'd already gotten Jerry one.
